What A Huge Disappointment!

Waiting all this time, all the hype and this is the best they can do?
up the speed, no memory upgrade, just plain poor.
no wonder the stock is taking a dive as we speak!
UGH!

Push notification is a great feature. Before today I was thinking that the only way to write an IM client would be to set up a server, direct all the messages to the server then when theIM client gets control it would have to poll the server. This would be very, very expensive if you have many clients running all over the world. But now it seems that Apple is making its server available to all developers. Even developers that offer free applications. This is a great and valuable gift from Apple

Complaint! Complaint! It doesn't have absolutely everything I wanted, and more! And where's my tablet!?

Actually, the second this can be bought I'm there. Do we have to wait until July 11th to purchase, or will it be offered on the store before then, and delivered on the 11th?

So we get free use of Apple's servers. Wow.

Very impressed with the functionality and price points - I will be finally purchasing a 16 GB version next month.

Another month w/ limited iPhone sales will not help the bottom line. Mobile me looks good - a bit disappointed that it was not ready to launch today.

High marks that the "enterprise" capabilities are solid - sales will be very robust once all of this is released.

As usual - Wall Street is pounding the stock price today - just wait until the full impact of these changes gains traction !!!

I agree 100%

I was really digging the video conference option that was rumored around. Just 3G, besides that its basically all Software updates. I don't think I'll be letting my current First Gen Iphone go yet.
*
the new features are basically 3g and GPS...I'll keep my current Iphone...I was looking for WOW!! software wise they have made great improves (that I can have on my current iphone:)...I'll wait for next years iphone, hopefully it will have video conferencing by then...weird that all the iphone killer phones from other companies have the video conference feature, but not the actual iphone...lol:cool:

I'm surprised there is no front camera.

Not enough wow factor for me to upgrade from iPhone 1.0. I'll wait for next year's iPhone... when my contract is up.

Can't wait to get some details on Snow Leopard.

Looks like current 16GB iPhones still have some value being able to run new software for free with maximum storage capacity. (No 32 GB version.)

Mac OS X 10.5 is required for SDK. But will it be necessary for end users?

i am real happy about the price and 3G/GPS. concerned that the plastic back will show scratches compared to the nearly un-damageable metal back on the current iPhone. disappointed that video recording and MMS messages still haven't been added to the phone, two of the most obvious "every other phone has had it for years" feature that it was lacking.

that said this is the time, my wife and i will be moving to iPhone, but i thought A) i would be paying more and B) i would be getting more. i guess i was wrong on both, one to my benefit, one not.

scalability

Was I mishearing or did Apple just try to convince me that having all notifications pass through Apple's servers through "one persistent connection" was more scaleable than each app handling its own business? What exactly is so inefficient about blocking on a select()?

It's like we're back to WAP and everything being squeezed through a gateway server...

Great job on the coverage MacRumors. I like the new automatic updating page.

So is this it, or is there more information coming out? The see you in 2009 comment from the coverage threw me for a loop.

Also, does full support mean it will be able to edit iWork and Office docs?

And also for the iPod touch, besides the iPhone. The firmware update applies to both of them.

AND BOTH OF THEM HAVE WIFI!!! SO, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE!!!

(checks the back of his iPhone) Uhhh, no. :) It's not anywhere near "un-damageable". I take great care of my phone and it still has a few scuffs & marks on the back of it. Plus due to the color, it gets dirty easily, I hate that. looking forward to the black "dirt-masker" color.

iDisappointment. Well, not really, but I would have been geeked for a front-facing cam. But let's be real, I'm getting one when it comes out. At least it's a little more loaded than the first and definitely cheaper

my guess is that something else was supposed to be announced today, and it didn't for whatever reason. i mean with the wwdc golden gate flyer. it showed 2 bridges. what does it mean? i'd assume 2 products. could it be mobileme and the new iphone? i don't think so. it sucks that its a month away to release, not 2 weeks, but oh well. my guess is that they'll introduce something new, within the next couple of weeks, or at least update something. like the ipod mini. 8gig ipod mini or 8gig iphone? 199?

now what was in those brown boxes!!!

So, full MS Office support... does that mean that you can edit Office documents or just read them?

While I'm a huge Apple fan and have always tipped my hat to the way they keep ahead of what people would want or need... the continued lack of MMS by a company that prides itself on mutimedia is absurd. The same goes for Flash. If they want to continue to say its because of battery life... thats fine. Have a way to toggle it on or off for those people who really want it. A cell phone with a camera that you can't MMS the photo to another cell is stupid and frankly an insult to the iPhone owners when every $50 phone on the market does the same thing.

Secondly, the lack of an upgrade to the camera or the camera software to prevent bluring if the subject breaths is also a shame.

I'm not one to complain because such and such product can't do everything but there is no excuse for this after a year let alone no consistent upgrades to the firmware.

The other companies will have a field day with this as will every tech show in the world. I don't care how many of these they sold or will sell.

they wouldn't do it. you can either download it from the app store on the iphone, or through itunes, on 10.4, or on pc for that matter.

Downsides:
Still 2 megapixel camera
MMS ?
No front facing camera (Personally, I'd rather have GPS)

Good points:
Price
Apps
GPS
Battery

So can I edit my Excel spreadsheets or not? Macrumours seems to say yes 'complete support' but gizmondo says I can only 'LOOK' at office/iWork files

Hmm... Seems we can't buy the iPhone via Apple anymore, which also means we can't activate at home, either. I already have an iPhone data plan with AT&T. Will they honor that, and simply let me purchase the new iPhone and continue to use it with no additional fees?

Also, it just seems to me that with Apple being a "green" company (or so they claim), it's almost hypocritical to take a step backward with an all-plastic design. When introducing the iMac, they made a big deal about the iPhone being an aluminum and glass product. I just find it odd that they'd use plastic again. Especially as plastic has a tendency to get dirty, scratched up and various other cosmetic issues that the aluminum material seems to avoid.

I'm betting that the iPhone prices are subsidized, and that we will not see the same prices for iPod touch. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it. :p

The $199 and $299 are most definitely subsidized prices, it says so at Apple.com.

So it doesn't really affect the iPod prices. Of course we'll get a rev at the next 'special event' in September, and all iPod models will get bumps in storage capacity.
