You can write papers just fine with a $300 laptop

In addition to the huge tuition you say you have to save up for, dont' forget money for rent, food, clothes. Unless you plan on living at home for college and medschool. Your mom can serve Tang to your friends then :D.

You're so worried about the debt you're going to have after college, but instead of saving the money you're working hard for, you buy iPads and iPhone and other crap.

Sense. This makes none.

Most of us are adults. We have jobs and know how to budget money. We have savings accounts, emergency funds, and/or investments. We take part in a 401k and start thinking about retirement as early as the mid-20s (or sooner!). We don't "need" our iPads, but we can also afford them without any major financial burden. In your case, as a child, you can't afford this stuff. Sure, you think you can on first glance. However, if you actually sit down (preferably with your parents) and look at the cost of college (including the other money you'll need during it for books, entertainment, etc), it's a big chunk of change. College isn't even the only thing to worry about - there are expenses too numerous to list. Have any hobbies or extracurricular activities? Those all cost money.

Couldn't of said it better. Kids are so spoiled these days.

Ouch! Times have changed. I had two tin cans and a piece of string when I was 14. Worked pretty well too.

Couldn't even spell college..... :)

Good luck.

+1 I don't think i could of said it any better myself. I think back to when I was a young teen and would have to mow lawns for months to afford anything nice and even then i still kept a relatively simple budget. Kids today are too spoiled.

I use to do yard work for a new basketball when I was a teenager. Back when Jordan still played. Good times.

That's what I was thinking. A top of the line computer isn't necessary for high school.

If you're serious about becoming an excellent doctor, it will not only involve money for school but a tremendous amount of time. Especially if you want to have a substantial income.

My goal would be my education above all else. Do it right and the money will follow. If you focus on spending, you'll never make it. The competition is intense, be the best and then you can buy the best.

Believe me you'll be so glad you focused on school.

If you're that concerned about debt, becoming a physician is not the path for you - I speak from experience.

I'm a third year surgical resident which means I've been an MD for three years now and the pay is peanuts. So don't think that once you finish med school you'll be pulling in the dough. My med school cost me $263K, as a third year resident I am currently making about 60K a year, I've still got two more years after this one until I make the real money.

Luckily for me I made some solid investments while I had the opportunity to do so, but most of my fellow residents weren't as fortunate.

If you want to be a doctor, it's gonna cost you - not money alone, but definitely a lot of money. Don't go into it worrying about the debt - you'll have plenty of time to pay it off (at least they hope you will).

xbuddycorex: Well done.

OP: not to jump on your case, but do take some time to digest what's just been written.

yeah lol @ spending 2k on a computer to write papers. A $500 computer will be just as good

Lol. Wrong I had a $500 laptop, but it's worse then my iPad so I gave it to my mom for free. I hate how when ever I make a thread the subject somehow changes to how spoiled I and other teens are, and how I'm too young and blah. I mean really like I want to hear this crap over and over, I mean I get it, but now you're an adult, you don't know what it's like to be a teen in this time and age where if you don't have an iPhone somehow you are a dumb, poor little kid.

My, how things change. I was born in 1980 (I'm 30) and feel old seeing kids even at 10 have flip phones. Back when I was 14, even having a pager in my class was cool. At 10, I didn't have the original Game Boy yet. No internet. You want info, get an encyclopedia or go to the library! I didn't get my first pager until I was 18 and my first phone until 19. I didn't text until I was 21 with my third phone and didn't get a smartphone until I was 27! From ages 10-14, my most important gadgets was my NES, SNES, and Genesis.

But I won't change my childhood years for anything. Water balloon fights, super soaker, capture the flag, backyard baseball, wrestling after school, running after the ice cream truck, etc. Then Voltron, Transformers, ThunderCats, He-Man, GI Joe, and TMNT once I got home. ABC's TGIF and Saturday Morning Cartoons. Back To The Future 1 & 2, Bill & Ted, and The Goonies that were some of my fav movies as a kid. Don't get me started with the music. Tears For Fears, anyone? I actually went out and talked with people. A social life beyond a bubble of texting and calling. My camraderie with my friends was like from the movie, The Sandlot.

Grew up in the 1980's and it rocked for a kid. I never would ever take it back. While technology is better now, the content was better from my youth.

Did you really just write that? I am offended (even though I do have an iPhone)
If you want to go blow off money on things you don't need, and want to work at a grocery store as a bagger for $7.25/hr, then go ahead.
You asked for the best advice, the most economical, and then you complain when people are giving you some realistic figures.

Do you have access to a computer at home? Because that is all you need for HS whether you want to believe it or not.

I only say this because you seemed extremely concerned about saving for college.

And you've just proven that you're a spoiled, materialistic brat.

Enjoy your toys, especially when you're begging mommy and daddy to pay for college, give you spending money, and buy your car because you were too busy pissing away your money on an iPad and frivolous crap you don't need. Oh, and I'm sure you won't appreciate anything either.
"Mommy, you bought me a car. But it's NOT brand new. And it's NOT a Porsche. I'm so unloved and I never get anything and I don't have anything and everyone else is better than me."

I've said it before and I'll say it again - kids these days...

1980's music has some of the highest replay value in house parties, weddings, karaoke bars, etc. And I'm not even including MJ and Madonna records. Certain magic about those times. Goonies never say die! Once a purple dinosaur started singing to toddlers and Saban started ripping off Voltron with Power Rangers, I knew it was time to grow up. By the time I was 14, I started giggling like Beavis & Butthead. "I am the great Cornholio!"

Nowadays, Apple battles Android. Yet, we are becoming "androids" ourselves. Where is the soul? Social networks making us more anti-social with our real life partners. I have half-siblings who are still young at age 6 and 8. After school or weekends is mostly playing Nintendo games for them. I told them how lucky I was as a kid and how fun and simple it was playing Hide N Go Seek. From bike riding to Teddy Ruxpin! Doing campouts with my cousins to looking at my dad's dirty magazines and porn. When their was "Music" videos on the original MTV before reality shows came took over. Then being "emo" on camera became popular.

That Windows 7 Phone commercials with people bumping into each other because they can't function and be aware anymore living in the real world makes perfect sense on what society is now. I love gadgets as much as anyone here and follow cell phone news daily, but now started to be a health freak and going to Church everyday. I need to save myself from these possessions that start to possess us.

OP, forget these Apple products. Go out more and learn to enjoy your youth first. Think about saving money for a car in two years. Think about the high school dances you will attend. Don't grow up so fast. Life is too short to let those moments pass you by.

Listen to Goo Goo Doll's "Name"

OP is 14.

He is delusional about life. There is much he still needs to learn. Understand that any insight we will provide will probably go over his head because he's a kid. I was 14 once upon a time too and was the same way.

Just throwing this out there again. I picked up an iBook G3 for my parents tonight. $80 shipped. THAT machine will do everything a high schooler needs.

I wouldn't go as far back as a G3, but yes.

I really do appreciate your insight, but I'm just worried about all of the debt I will be in right out of college. On the other hand, my first year's salary as a cardiologist will be $150,000. Ugh, I'll just see where my first year of high school takes me.

lol ... yeah I would focus on getting through High School first before you start spending that $150,000 you think you will have first year out of Med School.

What a joke of a thread. Spoiled 14 year old basically makes a post to show off his toys and walks right into what he deserves. Then plays the innocent child card and we are all the big, bad bullies.

Kid, you have a lot to learn about life. Good luck with that first year salary of $150,000, lol.

Wow you just summed up my youth too! Born 1983. My favorite movies were Star Wars. I miss those times a lot but am very happy with how things turned out now.
