Apple used to be a great company making great products. Now they just seem to be greedy greedy greedy. They are clearly willing to sacrifice user-friendliness for money. I won't be buying anything from them anymore. The system updates reduce functionality rather than expanding it, and design decisions like this one make it clear that they just want people to pay pay pay.

I have a 5 year old iPod classic which works great, and a refurbished 2011 MBP running Snow Leopard, and I think that's where I'll stop for now. No new stuff, no system updates. Apple, you're blowing it big time.

Blah, blah, blah.

See you at the Apple store...

From how they described the new connector it doesn't seem to be as simple as having pins dedicated to video, data, and audio.

Yes, the usage of the pins changes depending on the need. I think they need 8 if the data, audio, video, and power are all going through at once, but this is just a guess.

How is that greedy? It's not like Apple makes a significant amount of money off of making the system updates "reduce functionality" (which they don't except when it comes to Rosetta) or changing the connection. The old 30-pin standard needed to be upgraded sooner or later.

LTE doesn't count as a new feature? There are plenty of new features coming out in iOS 6. What's truly different is that Apple is allowing them to work on the iPhone 4S instead of forcing you to buy the iPhone 5 to get *software* updates.

It doesn't allow my phone to do something that it didn't do before, so no. It's a refinement.

I love monoprice.com :D

I always get stuff from those Chinese guys on eBay. I got 4 "USB Wall Charger+Cable For iPod Touch iPhone 3G 3GS 4G"s (USB wall charger and Dock Connector to USB adaptor) for a total of $9.56, free shipping. The shipping time is about a month, but whatever.

Why???
So you can connect to a 3 th party device.
You bought a 3 th party device and it's you who should buy the adapter for it.
It is your responsibility to buy an adapter for it.
How many people actually use a 3 th party device, including an adapter to all iPhone 5 buyers would create a huge pile of unused adapters.
There will be 10s of millions of iPhone 5 sold, so lets say 50% use that adapter then half of them will not be used, wasted money on Apple's part.
And I am pretty sure 50% is much more than the actual number of people who will use a 3 th party device.
Get real, sell your 3 th party device and get a new one, and if it's a car, just deal with it.
Apple needed to change the old connector, it was outdated, occupied to much space, was inferior, good riddance.

What's this 3th party device???

Perhaps you mean 3rd party device/dongle? And haven't you heard of the APPLE component av cables and 30 pin to HDMI adaptor? These are apple products, not 3rd party.

As for supplying them with the iphone 5? Well, you could be right. It's possible that more than 50% of users don't use such dongles and I'm fine with having to pay for one, but not 30 dollars fine. Although this doesn't worry me for now as I won't be upgrading due to needing to use older TVs with my ip4s. I'd love the better camera, bigger screen with the thinner and lighter casing and overall super speed bump. STUFF IT!

LTE is not an iOS 6 feature. It's a hardware thing. You can't update the antennas over the Internet.

That guy made me realize something. The adaptors should not come with the iPhones because not that many people will use them. It's a waste of money. Apple should sell them for a more reasonable price, however. The current price is too high.

This adapter apparently doesn't pass an analog signal through, which is what most iPhone car adapters require, including my own. I just had an iPhone adapter and cradle system installed in my car a year ago. It was not inexpensive. I guess I will pass on the iPhone 5, and continue to use my 4S for as long as possible.

Has anyone seriously ever hooked up their iPhone to a television??

Depends what you mean by "Seriously" connecting.

I've a bunch of kid's movies on mine & I will often connect to tvs when away from home. But maybe kid's movies aren't serious enough?

Samsung had all the cables, cases and accessories on sale immediately after the launch of their mega phones - Galaxy S3 and Note 2.

Apple blew it with their elongated iPoop.

There's nothing more serious than kids movies. I have a 9 month old I'm sure ill find out soon enough.

You need a diaper change with all that poop on your mind.

Lightning storm on the horizon?

I just read that iPod mode is no longer supported. Does that mean someone who currently owns a vehicle with a USB port/iPod integration can't control/navigate their new iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5 or 7th gen Nano with their vehicle's touch-screen/audio controls? If that's the case, the only options would be using the aux port, a costly hardware upgrade to your vehicle or a new vehicle.

That's in addition to the numerous docks (like my Denon dock which I bought a few years ago) that would become worthless, even with an adapter.

Yes, a speaker system for instance.

Exactly, I agree with you though, too expensive.

I'm a little nervous potentially having to fork over a decent amount of coin to replace a few dock connector items in cars and radios around the house.

BUT, two things...
The Lightning to 30 pin connector contains a digital to analog converter, so I'm hoping it works with my car units in some decent capacity.

I'm hopeful they finally have a way to support longer USB/connector cables. The 30 pin cables are far too short. I've got a speaker with a USB charge port on top, but because the USB cords are so short, I don't have a decent place to put an idevice anywhere while it tries to charge.

Not sure what the panic is, my car plays video, but using a USB cable, i.e the standard USB to 30 pin cable. I expect most do it this way.

How is that a partial solution?!

It is Apple. They TAKE AWAY functionality when going to a new standard. In this case, just a lousy plug!. They never explain clearly to their customers about the number of accessories that will not work because the new plug is digital and hence any analog passthru signals will not be there and hence will not work.
It dramatically affects a lot of accessories out there and Apple needs to be upfront about it. Providing an adapter is not the total solution. There is reduced functionality that needed a different solution.

You're lousy. And you are TAKING AWAY from this awesome forum. And you're being a drama queen. Relax guy.

Apple should provide 30pin to Lightning adapters for free with each new iDevice

Apple. Free? Hah!

----------

At the rate they're going these adapters are going to cost $99

It depends on if you want both audio and video. Audio will set you back $89, and the Audio/Video solution sells for $159. Oh, you wanted HD? Sorry, about that, then you want this! This revolutionary cable is only $199 and will make all your content look stunning!

I love how they changed the adapter to make the device 'smaller' yet I don't see any iDevices being thinner this year.

This change was made to force people to pay 40 bucks for their adapter, nothing more.

Further new 3rd party developers will develop under this plug making the reverse a problem too for those who have older devices.

I really don't know how Apple can get away with this its nothing more than a way to force consumers to buy adapters, there is ZERO benefit for the end user.

1) Do you actually say Thirth? Because you seem like a person who would!
2) There are a couple of hundred million Apple chargers out there ("1th party").
3) Enjoy your Kool-aid!

Dont worry, it will all be fixed with LongPhone 5S.

(Has anyone noticed that Apple-fans have become just like the oft-caricatured MSFT-fan? Next version, etc.)
