Am I the only one who feels like iPhone games aren't nearly as popular as they used to be? And back when they were super popular, Facebook was the only popular social app. Seems like games have been replaced as the most addictive apps.

It's a bit sad though that games that use in-app purchases in a good way are mixed in with the "freemium" games. One example is Smash Hit, which you can try for free and if you like it, a one-time in-app purchase enables features such as iCloud sync and checkpoints.

This is cool, but I wish they'd recognize more than 17 recent releases and 25 App Store Originals.

As a dev with a recent release (Drawn To Kill for iPad), the odds of getting noticed and placed on a list of 17 apps is basically 0%.

Good games that don't have IAP are out there, and this is a great half-step towards showcasing some. But they need a separate category (or a filter) for such games.

Are there actually IAP games that require you to purchase to progress? All the ones I've played required only patience to avoid spending cash. Patience is free for those who can afford it.;)

I don't think any of them require IAP to progress but they certainly make damn sure you can't really enjoy the game without speeding it up by paying some dough.
Check out this epic rant by some dude trying to play mobile version of Dungeon Keeper. (it's for the android version but the ios one has the same IAPs as far as I can tell).
can you spot the difference?

dungeon keeper is one game you can do pretty well without spending money. though I spent some it was not needed. but it is slow no matter what.

This is a great step in the right direction. I refuse to pay any in app purchases and hate to see the app world going that way. I will gladly pay a fair price for an app/game as long as I don't get suckered into a Pay 2 Win situation.

The problem I have are those game where the IAP prompts turns the game into nagware.

Lets hope that this combines with the new 4GB download limit will enable some real increase in quality games, not pay-to-win garbage.

What you call epic, I call whiny, entitled and annoying. Apparently multiple people like the game based on it's rating. Yet, his opinion is the one I should take? Nope. He shows us a stopping point where IAP slows his progress. Okay. How long had he been playing before he reached that point? 5 min? 10? An hour? I have no idea. Funny thing, I don't doubt the game may have overly aggressive IAP (I mean, it's an EA property and EA is the spawn of the devil and syphilitic chupacabra). EA notwithstanding, the guy could have taken the 3 hour route, used his coins, or put the damn game away for 24 hours. Heck I've waited 3 days to avoid IAP or bugging the crap out of my friends just to play a game. IAP is annoying as hell, but it can be avoided; even in this game.

for comparison, here is the same dude playing it on PC (no IAP crap).

No IAP? I am assuming he paid for the game outright. If so, there's no comparison. If my previous statement holds true, I can spot the difference:

One is free to play with restrictions or micro transactions, and the other is for pay with no restrictions.

Pay to play is indeed a cancer. Where I see free for a day (that's a $9.99 value, folks) I realize it's a game that costs $3,650/year if you play daily. Absurd.

Where I like iap's is when they permanently unlock features. I pay to buy expansions for my physical board games and the e-quivalent is only fair.

Probably because the 99 cent song became the 99 cent game. That was easy to market to us iPod guys. Now you have kids getting iPhones beforr they understand the value of money.

The thing I like most about this promotion is that they didn't mark any of these down.

finally. its very exhausting reading through game descriptions only to find out there is in app purchases. even worse trying to figure out what is offered as core content for the initial content.

Consoles should now do the same. Big selling games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Forza and the like have went the way of buying these add ons that kids are sure to insist they need which often adds a further $30 to $40 to a game purchase. Whatever happened to the days where you bought a game and that was all you needed to enjoy it to its fullest? Then you waited until the sequel came out.

Except the issue is, no one even bother to do a spell check...

So Apple is advertising the responsible developers here?
I am so glad for this. The responsible developers like these need to be put to the front. And the drip feeding freemium developers need to be pushed to the back.

I think this should go for apps as well as games. For example, Pixelmator is am amazing one off price for what you get and photoshop these days is bloated and in a drip feeding subscription. I am sure there is many non game examples out there.

This is awesome.

I think it should be more universal for ALL app store systems

there should be 4 levels of apps and the categories should split them properly

Free
Free (WITH in app purchases)
Paid (with in App purchases)
Paid (without in app purchases)

if i'm looking for free stuff, don't lump in the "Free with in App purchases", because then that game isn't really free.

Similarly, I don't want to buy a game, just to find out that there's "pay to win" in it.

Apple so need to do this. I'm after some good games and half the ones I look at are freemium or even have the immorality to be paidmium (Paid with in app purchases also). Some games I can pay for upfront and just enjoy them would be great. And would be nice if I could search for just those ones.
