Do you make money off using the camera on your phone? If yes, then you have every right to complain.

If not then all you are doing is blowing smoke, you can't seriously expect cameras on phones to be without their flaws. Even the notoriously highest rated camera phone, the Nokia 808 Pureview, has it's flaws (in addition to running a bad OS). You choose which phone to buy, if it's a big deal to you then buy one that makes you happy, but complaining about on it the internet is not going to get you anywhere, especially when the company that makes it is clearly not going to do anything different.

NO SERIOUS PHOTOGRAPHER WOULD USE AN IPHONE, so yeah there blowing smoke...Isn't it better to spend more time with your MATE, and less on a Blog? IMHO YES !

If anything, from these sample images, the flare looks much worse on the 4S. Notice the low contrast purple haze. This too is a result of lens flare, not just the bright streaks. While the 5 exhibits the bright steaks the overall image appears to have more contrast and in fact less flare.

Wow. People are idiots.

It's like any camera: it has strengths and weaknesses. Learn how it works and make changes accordingly.

So the me get this straight. The iPhone 5 comes out and the worst two things Anti-Apple people could find wrong with the phone are:

1) The back scratches easily when you scratch it forcefully with a key.

2) You get glare when you point the camera at the sun.

Haters gonna hate... :apple:

I've heard more complaints online about iOS 6 coming with it online since Maps uses Apple Maps, not Google Maps, and Apple Maps is supposedly bad. I've tried it a little, and it works fine where I am, but I guess that's not the case for everyone.

Okay...i havent even heard of this before. They shoulda responded to the wfi issues or lte thing.
Lame even if this is true. Why the hell does it matter.

So, the 4S just has less weaknesses, according to the complainers. And the changes: use the 4S, not the 5.

I don't actually think this is true. I'm going to try to do some of my own test shots, but I seriously doubt that any camera on a phone prevents purple lens flares, and I've seen it happen all the time on other cameras. It's probably just some people finding nonexistant flaws to complain about. The iPhone 5 photo on this article looks better than the 4S photo, by the way.

The 5 looks WAY better than the 4S.

Why do you think that lens flare is a bad thing? It normally takes a nice camera to be able to achieve "artistic" lens flare.

Tried it on my iPhone 4...

Not sure why people are now complaining about it...

Apple gets slack for Maps, and scuffgate but this seems to be a problem from all the way back.

Funny the way people with no photography experience are suddenly an expert on lens flaring. You can buy the top of the line dslr and lenes and have the same thing happen. I recommend not shooting into the sun. It will fix the problem.

In the picture the OP has it looks worse in the 4S.
That said. Stop taking pictures incorrectly. That is probably this real issue here. Not always but more often than not.

Seriously.

THE LENS FLARE IS TERRIBLE!!

Oh wait this from a video source, I guess the FIA needs to invest in much, much better equipment.

Most sources and forum threads that covered the issue demonstrated far more significant differences; methinks MacRumors is trying to add pro-Apple spin, surprise surprise.

That said, is the issue blown out of proportion? Sure. But the "you're holding it wrong" response is still disappointing. I had hoped that kind of cavalier attitude towards design flaws, however minor, would have been beaten out of them after the Antennagate incident. Alas, it seems that is not the case.

Yes, it is blown out of proportion entirely. Completely. It would be nice if Apple -- or any other producer of small cameras which shoots movies in 1080p with an 8 MP sensor -- could somehow fix that purplish tinge that meant that my shot of the eclipse recently went all purple like this. But this would mean you're expecting Apple to defy the laws of physics. The perfectly normal explanation of the problem by Apple gets greeted by this "gate" ridiculousness. Congratulations, you found a flaw. For the record, if you want to take a picture of the sun, you need huge neutral density filters and a very long, sophisticated, multi-element lens, and a completely light-sealed backplate, with no reflections inside the camera. And each lens, and each sensor, has its own characteristics. With the iPhone 5, you get 1080p, a very good color accuracy that you're not going to get with Samsung, and a number of frankly impressive features for a tiny camera phone, that's good enough for many to stop buying anything less than a $400-up DSLR or similar standalone camera. Hey, here's a clue: stop reading Gizmodo for anything like the truth about Apple, since they had that run-in and there's bad blood there.

That's funny, when the 4 S came out there were people here comparing the camera to a Canon 5D MkII. What happened?

I know everyone expects the devices they buy from Apple to be made of magic and to defy the rules physics, but they simply can't do that.

To be fair that's what they claim about their gadgets in their ads

Then how come taking the same shot indoors, NOT pointing directly into a light source produces no purple lens flare with my DSLR, but does with my 5?

"It's not our fault"

Want a good camera? Mobile phone camera is not it.

Because your 5 is a phone?

How well is your conversation over your DSLR?

But your comment makes sense..., not allowed in this forum, sir.

News flash, the sun is every color.

Physics laws do not apply to these folks that are experts at every thing bad apple does.

----------

Then why tiny lenses in other smart phones do not produce the same purple effect? Sure, most of them are not as tiny as iPhone 5 lens which seems to be the root cause of the issue here.

Because those people do not take pictures at the sun? And when they do, they take a second one with no flare?

Also, other phones are crappy any way, so why complain about them? None would listen nor care.

Lens flare is OK, but it's bad when there is a purple halo. And the picture from the 5 looks better than the picture from the 4S in this case.
