Oh .. that's funny.. I really liked the lens flare since it looks like a legitimate lens flare . . . vs. once upon a time where the lens just did funny circle things.

It's the front element flaring... we've got a piece of sapphire on there. I own plenty of L-Lenses that are designed to avoid flaring, for the most part, until you hit the "too far" point, and it will flare in its own unique way, depending on the # of elements, coatings, type of lens, etc. Other lenses flare different colors or patterns, with about a million variables.

I really did think this one was a "feature" and really demonstrated that the lens is more "real"...
The way I see it, if someone has a camera that's a tiny speck on a pocket sized computer that's also a phone, and they point it straight at the sun, and then they complain about purple lens flares, they're a bunch of ****** ***** *** * ***** ** * ****** and they should be **** and ******.

Compared to other companies, Apple makes a very small number of products. This is good for many reasons, but it means any problems, no matter how small, or in this case non-existent, gets intense coverage from the media and users in forums and on tech sites.

Always look to the facts.

"Users raise concerns over lackluster fidelity of iPhone microphone"

In another blow for Apple's problem-ridden iPhone 5, reports are now coming in from worried and disappointed users suggesting that the iPhone's built-in microphone may be of subpar quality.

Mike Rofoni, 33, of Columbus, OH was among the first to report the possible defect, after attending a Metallica concert which he recorded in its entirety on his iPhone 5. Says Mike, "I was in a perfect spot some three feet away from the speaker stack and recorded the entire gig on the iPhone 5 in my pocket. But when I came home and opened the audio file, I was shocked to find that the sound was distorted and muffled. Then I looked at the waveform and realized there was no dynamic range at all."

Other users have chimed in, pointing to the microphone's apparent incapability for near-field recording of grenade impacts, low-flying passenger jets and Harley-Davidson engines with the muffler removed.

"Apple claims to know tech and be cutting edge and all, but it's simply not true. I have a 50 year old Neumann mic that sounds way better than the iPhone 5 mic. I see no option but to go class-action. Apple quality ain't what it used to be. Steve Jobs would never have allowed this", Mike concludes, with tears in his eyes.

Ha ha, brilliant

I think it is true that all lenses do this to some degree but I have to admit out of the 20-30 cameras that I have in the house my iPhone 5 has by far the most prominent flare (glowing purple corner).

Battery life on my iPhone 5 is straight up phenomenal.
Today: wifi, LTE, and Bluetooth on all day, including BlueTooth streaming iTunes Match music over LTE to my car stereo:
5 hours 58 minutes usage
13 hours 10 minutes standby
46% charge remaining.

Lucky for you it actually works as advertised. I'm not one of these super picky types as my second iPhone 5 has a scuff out of the box. That doesn't bother me. What does is the wifi not working and the poor battery life. My first iPhone had a speaker problem and Apple tried to tell me since it was a hardware problem that it was a contributing factor to my poor battery life on my first iPhone 5. Well the second one doesn't have that issue and even with LTE and wifi turned off along with location services my battery drains faster then any phone I've ever used. In a time yesterday sending 5 texts within five minutes it dropped six percent.

Also funny how people will add this effect to some photos but they can naturally get it and complain. I'm a hobby photographer and this happens whenever you point a lense at the sun...

Allo?

Me and my iPhone 5 took a shower together. But it's stopped working ever since!

Why?

Did you try to calibrate it, i.e. run it down until the phone shuts down automatically and then recharge it again? My old iPhone 3G showed crazy power drainage until I did that.

Calibrate.. Yes

Yes. I do and recommend this for all battery powered devices regardless of what the manufacture says even if they say it doesn't matter with new types of batteries. It has always worked great for me in the past.

Thanks though btw.

Also how I said this iPhone has scuffs and such on the casing out of the box and I'm returning it but not because of that. I could really care less besides it is in a case but because I can't use wifi at all. That wouldn't be so much of a problem either if I was allowed to download apps over 50mb's over the cellular network. ( I have unlimited data). But I can't and I've reset the phone hard and soft and nothing helps.

I think the camera is fine but I will say this is the worst apple product I've owned in terms of quality control and "it just works."

Hardware
Camera is taking purple colour photos when light is on the sides of the lense.
Battery life the same as in iphone 4s(wich was crappy)
iOS 6
Wifi sometimes doesn't connect and if it does its with slower speeds.
Apple removes google maps and put their own, good move only they are on beta stage and that removes functionality...
Apple fans find it normal.

And all that with apple keeping the same price on the phone asking 1000$ +(thats the price in europe when you change the euro to $) the most expensive phone in the world with the most problems in the world at premium price ofc because it is apple...
Thats what happens when you stop care for the costumer and you just look how to fil your pockets with more money.

Camera: All lenses can produce lens flares. My Canon 5d with a 2K lens... flares!

Battery: WTF are you talking about still out performs most smart phones... of a comparable size - of course you can have better battery life in a G3 or Note. They have car batteries in them!

WiFi - No problem here.. but agree this could be a manufacturing / software issue.

Maps - Ok they released a version which was not complete. but it's also a cloud sourced service... I pointed out 4-5 small things in my area - a small town in the UK - and a week later... FIXED! Also it had to be done as Google would not allow their Turn by Turn to be used. Which works great here anyway. The only thing I missed is Street View and that's now in the Google HTML Maps.

Scratching is an issue - anodised stuff scratches - fine - but you expect it to be good out of the factory.

I do wonder why phones / devices are not completely machine made these days?

If you look at the screen and don't like what you see, change the angle or position of the camera. This is called composing a picture.

Slow down there; are you actually suggesting people learn something about composition and light? That a picture is more than pressing the shutter button on an inexpensive P&S camera like the iPhone?

The problem is Apple has put a decent enough camera in the iPhone and people *think* all it takes to get a good picture is to point and shoot; after all the phone is easy to use so the camera must be as well. As a result, they have no expectation of a need to learn some basic concepts about photography and complain when "the phone messes up."

Interesting and true for the most part.

I think that Apple should have touted it as a new feature for iPhone 5: you get the flare effects as seen on the Star Trek reboot movie that came out a year or so ago.

Thanks for the photography 101 lesson Stephen123 - many people seem to have either skipped that part or need a refresher course. Lens-flaring is an optical "artifact" that occurs when light passes through various lens elements.

I though an artifact was something Indiana Jones discovers.

For the record, Steve was absolutely right. There was nothing wrong with the phone.

Once again, uneducated people are trying to pretend that their ignorance is a defect on Apple's part.

If you think you're rubbing salt in Apple's wound here, you're mistaken, quite the reverse!
Oh yeah and they fired the designer of that system because he owed Steve some money and didn't pay it back.

Flashback,

"antennagate" : "you are holding it wrong " and "every phone has this deathgrip"

"Purple flare gate" : "you are pointing it wrong" and "every phone has flare"

Both times its BS because they simply wont admit an error and both times they try to dilute the issue with other issues.

Blissful ignorance, you must be happy, no?

Except this time it's true. Even Apple isn't exempt from the laws of physics.

No! Watch through their iPhone 5 ads! One of them clearly states "I guess the laws of physics are more just... Guidelines, or something."

I'd have to say as a photographer when you point any camera at a a bright source you get undesired effects

So I reluctantly side with Apple on this one

Maps will get better and they had to do it but they are big enough so they could have done a little more r&d! Also my battery is worse then my iPhone 3G back up phone and my girls 4s. So why is it that?

And the publicity comes from the reality of the matter, that Apple is a very large company making products that are incredible, and you're converting people that are expecting it to be 100% perfect, but sadly, this world has very few (if any) things that are perfect in it.

Indeed. Design and engineering is all about trade-offs. Nothing is ever perfect in all circumstances.

Spoil the people by adding cameras to their phones and you'll never hear the end of it.
