I highly doubt that any Kodak compact will fare better taking pictures with too much back light. That is, unless you can attach a filter to the lens.

Will do that. Thank you.

The only thing it has over the phone camera is that I have it for 2 years and know how much or how far I can go to take pictures it it. I haven't started using smartphone camera until I got iPhone 4 in 2011.

So, stop using iPhone as a main camera until I know what will happen next? And get rid of the instant upload habits while I'm at it.

Flashback,

"antennagate" : "you are holding it wrong " and "every phone has this deathgrip"

"Purple flare gate" : "you are pointing it wrong" and "every phone has flare"

Both times its BS because they simply wont admit an error and both times they try to dilute the issue with other issues.
Yeah, and let's not forget "Morongate" -- that time when Apple finally had to admit that a large portion of their user base are a bunch of blithering idiots who'd die of starvation in the middle of Manhattan if Siri was offline. Tim "Snake" Cook slithered his way out of that one by saying that users are like that by design and that Apple couldn't do anything about it, so I'm suing.

I'm not a photographer by any stretch of the imagination and I knew how stupid these complaints were.

Under the right conditions i can get my Nikon 3DX (an $8000 camera) with any variety of $2000-$10,000 lenses attached and get this "manufacturing defect" to occur. It occurs more with some lenses than others. Physics people. Apple's not going to solve one of the greater delemna's of image capture with a camera phone. They might be able to minimize it in the future with some tradeoffs, but it's inherent in the interaction of light, glass and sensors. It's a great camera btw. It's not a replacement for anyones DSLR but it's a really nice thing to have in your pocket for spontaneous photography. Under the right conditions, you can get some really great pics.

That iPhone 5 photo looks much better than the 4S one. Considering it's deliberately pointed at the sun, the 5 resolves a lot more detail amongst the flare.

And yes, chromatic aberration is not news unless you can somehow link it to Apple and drive page views.

Anyone who played around with photography in high school knows if you are going to shoot directly into the sun or another hot light source and expect good results, you will need to use an SLR with a filter stack to kill that corona. This is a cell phone. Admittedly, it is a great cell phone but it's not a Nikon SLR camera.

not sure why this is news?

Do people really expect iPhone5 to take as good of pictures as a Canon 60D?

Get of the lends flare, its a dang phone ...

It's called Lens Flare. Cell Phone lenses are not designed to shoot into the sun.

95% of cell phone users are not photographers. They take "snap shots".

If people would like to actually learn something, as opposed to responding to Regurgitated Gizmodo Fecal Projections click on the link. There are other reviews out there as well.

The haters will refuse to accept this. Only the Nokia produces higher quality "Snap Shots".

Steve should have shut Gizmodo down when he had the chance. Pathetic demonstration of publishing.

flares are back

"It's not our fault"

Complaints about lens flares from people that have never used a camera before, any lens including a high end model will flare when pointed at the sun or very bright light, duh.

My Canon DSLR has crappy cell phone reception. Canon sucks.

Thank you! You are my new hero.

Everyone seems to rush to reply to say how flaring is normal. I don't think this is in the news because it's flaring, it's because it's drastically showing purple flaring.

I've had every iPhone version since the first, including the latest, as well as a Canon SLR. While taking shots that had sun rays coming down always had a typical white flare, only in the iPhone 5 have I experienced the "purple flare" and have it be so noticeable.

Just like with the scratching, every iPhone has been susceptible to scratching, however only the iPhone 5 has been so easily scratched on the edges. Within the first two days there were cheaps and scratches on the sides. Yet, I have old versions such as the iPhone 4 that have never had a case and still has no noticeable scratches. Overall, I think the iPhone 5 is the most durable in the sense if you drop it, it is most likely not to crack the screen and of course is the lightest. But it does scratch incredible easy and that is what customers are complaining about. If apple made a iPhone out of paper and people all of the sudden complained that it gets destroyed with even a drop of water, Apple and commenters would say well of course water drops will destroy paper. But what customers are saying is, the iPhone shouldn't have been made out of paper, or in this case a material that scratches so easily. Or they should have made the black version, black on the front (so the screen blends in) but silver on the sides and back (like the white model) since then the scratches wouldn't show through as noticeably.

So please commenters don't be so quick to mark all customers as dumb, and listen to what they are actually complaining about.

Easy marks is a new issue in the iPhone 5 (compared to old iPhones), noticeable purple flare in photos is a new issue in the iPhone 5 (compared to old iPhones), Maps are notcieably less accurate in iOS 6 (because of the new data set).

I've had an i5 since day one. No case. I throw it in my pants pocket every day, and there is not ONE sign of wear on it. Lucky me I guess - I got the only one made out of titanium & kryptonite

I can't wait for Tim Cook to say something like this.

Let see... we have the Maps app, and now the camera.... and wifi issues

Whats next ? the battery ?

Huh? It's normal for any lens... If anybody wants I can go take a picture with my L-series canon 70-200 glass with high-end coatings and top notch glass and demonstrate the same effect. This is normal physics people! Welcome to photography. Lens hoods can help with this, and more importantly use lens flare as an effect in your photos (like we all do - heck you can even add the effect in Photoshop!). Or more importantly don't point your camera at the sun!

If you have an L lens that produces ugly bright purple flaring as seen in these samples I would take it back in a heartbeat. None of my Canon or Sigma lenses flare like this.

There are some real cretins on this thread who are talking about flaring as if it is all equal. It isn't. If you had an experience of photography I can't believe you wouldn't understand this! I give up with some of the users of this forum, even the Canon v Nikon nonsense on DP Review isn't this bad.

I guess that Apple had pegged their customers as photographically ignorant. Yes, flare is normal. No, purple flare is not normal.

Apparently you're part of the photographically ignorant masses. There is both flare and chromatic aberration in the sample photo. It's the chromatic aberration that's giving you the purple. It's the combination of both effects that's giving the results shown. Perhaps more so on the iPhone 5 but again, absolutely nothing new. The lens is simply failing to focus all colors to the same point... nothing new here.

(But to be technically correct, you can have purple flare.)

Gizmodo here???

Gizmodo seems to have taken over the peanut gallery <ahem> I mean comments section here...

But really? People are making a stink about discolored photos when pointed at BRIGHT LIGHT (hint: try to avoid taking photos in that direction).

C'mon people. I have photos I took with an iPhone 3G that have purplish glare. Same for my iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S, and iPad 3. All produce the same coloring effect. Same goes for general discoloration when photos were taken with my Sony CyberShot F-828 and Sony Alpha 300. It has to do with a combination of the "bright light" and the way the digital sensor records the image.

Here's a couple of tips:

1) See above. Try to avoid taking photos in that direction. Believe it or not, it helps.

2) Get PhotoShop Elements, or Pixelmator, or even throw the whole money bag into the ring and get a copy of PhotoShop. All of those can be used to rid your photos of that pesky discoloration.

Camera: All lenses can produce lens flares. My Canon 5d with a 2K lens... flares!

Battery: WTF are you talking about still out performs most smart phones... of a comparable size - of course you can have better battery life in a G3 or Note. They have car batteries in them!

WiFi - No problem here.. but agree this could be a manufacturing / software issue.

Maps - Ok they released a version which was not complete. but it's also a cloud sourced service... I pointed out 4-5 small things in my area - a small town in the UK - and a week later... FIXED! Also it had to be done as Google would not allow their Turn by Turn to be used. Which works great here anyway. The only thing I missed is Street View and that's now in the Google HTML Maps.

Scratching is an issue - anodised stuff scratches - fine - but you expect it to be good out of the factory.

I do wonder why phones / devices are not completely machine made these days?
I hope you don't disagree that apple could put a bigger battery in it but chose not to and just make it thinner.
Flares sure lots have it but not purple ones they fix the color and not that big flares on other devices,it is worst than on iphone 4s but ofc we can say that it happened because apple made the device thinner and well they changed the lenses to make it fit in there(again this thinner thingie causes problems).
I mean its nice to try and make things cooler thinner etc. but it is bad when the device gets worst because of that.
Devices in same size i see with 1750 mah batterys in them and they are cheaper from 200-400 $ usually, all the premium smartphones are bigger screen bigger batterys better cpu's etc. but i don't care because they have android in them that for my tastes suck. ;);)
I do hope you don't find it bad that i ask from apple simple things that exist in tech world now and make the phone tons better than it is.

That guy hit the nail on the head. We live in a world of astonishing, amazing stuff. I mean, take Skype, for example. I can video call with someone the other side of the world for nothing. App Stores! I can buy, for a few quid, games or any kind of software I want and have it up and running in seconds. Seconds! There was a time when it would take hours to install and run even a basic game from some kind of digital tape! HOURS!

I carry, in my pocket, a box of digital trickery that can do more than my first PC. I can locate myself anywhere on Earth, talk to anyone on Earth. Listen to near enough any music that exists. Watch video, play games, create music, share pictures data, do work, buy and sell stuff... how can anyone alive today who's lucky enough to live in the wealthy third of the world be unhappy with what they have?! It's depressing to see how unhappy some people are. Just goes to show that they're looking for happiness in the wrong places.
