My 720p ATV was bricked. Just ran the update via wifi and the light on the front flashed continually afterwards. Have yet to find a micro-USB cable to try and restore.

I find it strange that some people are questioning this is an issue because it didn't happen to them.

Also had the problem yesterday, updated and had the flashing light. I connected to my mac and did the wipe and reload, got the flashing light again. Then I properly read the instructions which asked for the :apple:TV to have the HDMI unplugged during the upgrade. Did it again, initially got the flashing light but as per the instructions pulled the power plug and restarted. Presto it was OK. I usually hate reading instructions, but this time it helped to RTFI.

remind me....But when was this ever so?

BTW updated mine and have no issues.

List of Apple Inc. slogans

"It Just Works."

It's a fairly old Apple campaign slogan :)

In my Google search, I came across this article:

It Just Works, NOT! Apple Fail.

I didn't read that full article as the title is obnoxious, however it mentions iPhoto, etc. being broken and reminded me that iPhoto was able to restore photo's via "Time Machine" as Mail, Contacts, Calendar, etc.

Open iPhoto, click on "Time Machine", go through various dates and restore the deleted photo's. iPhoto 9.2+ removed that ability, requiring a complete library store.

iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later)

When using iPhoto ’11 (version 9.2 or later) and Time Machine with OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later), iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library.

Random off-topic question, but does any one know why? Is it related to the then new Photostreaming abilities? I miss that feature.

Bricked both the aTV's in my house. Apple says they are out of warranty and the 'Terms of Service' I accepted before the update says I accept the possibility they will be rendered unusable.

Wow.

following in suit with every other buggy software released by Apple in 2013

I'm dying to know what this setup looks like.

Does the CHP know about this?

We'll in not out riding around watching movies. But it's great if you wanna take a drive to the beach with your significant other and stream a movie to, but I use it with Radio.com, iTunes Radio, my own music. Anyone who gets in the car can easily connect and stream their music. The kids have wifi for their devices anywhere we go. Everything starts up with the car and powers down when the car does. It was just a little project I wanted to try out.

I had the exact same issue. Had to do a restore, but all was fine after that. Funny, though, the only micro USB cable I have laying around is from my Kindle. I wonder if Apple would send you a free micro USB cable if you complained?

i gotta go to apple retail and get the replacement apple tv.

sigh.

Haven't you figured it out yet? Never install the initial version of any software update from any company!

Idiots.

this is not beta, and this is firmware issues... generally apple was spot on the iDevice firmware upgrades. definitely not their finest time (with apple tv).

Wow.

Try a restore from DFU mode:

... or just send them to me, I'm up in St. Augustine, I'll cover the shipping :D

(FWIW, mine are happily running this latest release...)

If you don't have an Apple TV why comment? Also thorough testing is a myth - always has been always will be.

Why comment? Because I can. My point was that Apple keeps kicking themselves in the ass by releasing things half done... rushed just to get it out the door.

1. Most people I have spoken to really like iOS7. A genuinely positive response from what I hear/see.

2. Just like any other iPhone they sell out and have to wait for more to be made. Nothing new here.

3. That is true.

Answer - Not as bad as you make things out to be.

1 - Funny, I have had the opposite experience, while IOS7 has a bunch of great stuff, my friends and family, high school kid, College kid, and co-workers all have commented to me about being way to "white-on-white", anemic fonts, lackluster washed out keyboards, notes, calendars, mail, and messaging. Us black theme lovers aren't very happy with the flat new look. I was NO fan of green felt and leather graphics, but color and lines helped notes! This seems a bit over the top the other way.

2 - Hey, They'll make as many as you like!

3 - True

Wow.

Double wow! I would be pissed if mine was bricked and got that response.

I have 3 ATV3's and only upgraded 1, wired LAN, no issues. Went to upgrade the other two tonight and saw no updates available and came here to get the scoop. Stuff happens, no problem, but Apple should take care of a bricked unit by a now known defective release.

If, iOS 7 lock screen, NC, photos, email and emergency call bugs weren't enough, now you have another magical experience with your Apple TV. *SMH* is it karma Apple?

I always saw Apple as being pricey, unique, having quality, design, eficiency and always delivered something other could not match. But sadly, after Steve Job passed away things have been going downhill since and all we get now is colorful plastics, buggy softwares and hardware.

I think people need to wake up and stop giving Apple a pass everytime. So that, Apple gets back to its root again.

Yeap, bricked my appletv 2. Had to unbrick via iTunes restore. Naturally all configuartation is deleted, requiring setup from scratch.

Not sure how this could happen, suffice it yo say Apple needs to raise their game.
