Backdrops, lol. I wonder what the drawbacks are though?

How well do you speak and write in 3 different languages? You understood the meaning. Senseless sarcasm or criticism... English is my second language, in case you wonder. Still was good enough to pass a test 90% of native speakers fail for Graduate School... ;)

Well, I'll correct it then.

iPhone 4S has a slightly smaller resolution than iPad2... at least on 3D/vector graphics rendering, it will seem faster than iPad2.

You forget though that the iPad is clocked 200MHz faster at 1GHz (iPhone 4S only at 800MHz) which results in 786432 pixels for the iPad and 614400 pixels for the iPhone. So, the pixel per processor speed is roughly the same: iPhone has 80% speed and 78% pixel of the iPad. ;)

iPad + retina display would be unstoppable.
While I certainly agree with your claim, I wonder just how Apple will handle the pricing.

I have no problem paying premium pricing for my MacBook Pros and the like, but the consumer that buys an iPad is a different buyer.

They need to exactly double the current resolution to 2048x1536

Anything else will royally screw over current Apps unless the are rewritten for the new screen, which would be a lot to ask now.

That's QXGA with 263 ppi, the iPhone 4/4S has 329 ppi. It won't be amazing but I welcome it. Wonder if they will meet the price and battery life of the iPad 2, if they will I'll buy it. Otherwise I'll go ASUS.

I shudder to think the amount of power that is required to drive a high retina display of that size. In this day and age of powerful gaming computers and consoles, even they are subjugated to 1080p resolution for the most part.

How is a tablet CPU and GPU going to drive such a rich display?

Games will run at half resolution i.e 1024x768?

Planning on buying my mom an iPad 2 for Christmas, I hate doing so knowing than a new iPad is right around the corner.

I would love to see the iPad 3 with an USB port for hooking up external drives. All of the other tablets have HDMI and USB ports. Why can't Apple. I could care less about the screen give me the ports.

it will make it look ugly.

Man, I am so excited about the iPad 3! May or may not even have the retina display (but I hope it does), but I'm just looking forward to seeing the evolution of the iPad, as it gets better and better...

Honestly there's not much I would change about the iPad 2. The ui is buttery smooth. Interested to see what apple can pull off here.

If iPad 3 does have a Retina Display then it will be the ultimate reading device. Kindles with e-ink can make that argument now, but not then. Can't wait! :)

1) Modern gaming computers today can blow past 1080p very easily. Hell, the 27" iMac using mobile GPU's does it and produces very acceptable results. Consoles struggle but you have to remember that the PS3 (the last uber-console released) is using 2006-era graphics technology.

2) Detail levels on modern console and PC games are still a long way past tablet gaming. What you're looking at on tablets is (sorry, horrible over-simplification coming up) effectively PS2-era graphic levels. Where the tablets have an advantage is their GPU's are being built to support newer technologies which make certain effects far easier than the raw power approach of the consoles and produce better looking scenes without the need for such monster graphics processors. I did say it was over-simplified...

3) Multi-core GPU's are your friend. Just look at what Sony are getting out of the Vita in terms of graphics quality, and that's in the first wave of games. Granted it's only a 960 x 540 display but it's a good demonstration of what can be done with mobile parts.

Looking at various techs that are coming along, and assuming Apple do indeed launch a Retina iPad in March / April, the tech seems to line up fairly nicely. The A6 could effectively be the same as the chip in the PS Vita - 4 core A9 with 4 core SGX543. Double the cores of the iPad 2 should more-or-less compensate for the increased resolution. The iPad 4 would then see an A7 with ARM's cortex A15 procesor (quad core or higher) and the PowerVR Series 6 GPU's (or equivalent) in 2013. That would fit nicely in Apple's upgrade cycle - the iPad 3 would have a major (and very obvious) feature change in the screen, the iPad 4 would be effectively a (potentially huge) speed boost.

Of course that's all speculation and might be total nonsense :D

Anyone really believe that Apple is manufacturing and boxing iPad 3s in a warehouse somewhere? 5 Months before launch? Yeah, right.

And you'll find them right beside the Lost Arc of the Covenant ;)

I think you'll find them stored alongside the iPhone 5 that they decided not to launch this year ;)

I wonder if an exact multiple of the iPhone 4/4S res is possible, e.g. double it

So 960x640x2 giving 1920x1280. Would be less strain on the CPU than doubling the iPad res and would also make for easier scaling of existing iPhone apps (although not for scaling existing iPad apps).

I hope those stories of problems with the retina display are way out of date and the manufacturers have since sorted the problem. I've been waiting for a retina display iPad for quite some time now. I was prepared to buy the iPad 2 but in all honesty, I can wait a little longer.

Perhaps, but they could tweak the A4. Furthermore, I do expect SIRI to be part of the iPad experience going forward.

Ah, man's search for speed... Speed kills, don't you know?

I don't know...before then it will be something else... better wait until 2014 or later.

At the rate people are grabbing up the SIRI 4S iPhone, it won't be long before kids won't know how to type any more. "Remember when computers had all those keys you used to have to punch with your fingers?"

What!! I thought those were iPads! Ohmygawd!

Writing is faster, more direct, and less intrusive on your environment. Keyboards are not going anywhere. Voice certainly wont replace them.

(that said, it will surely complement them - and AI+NUI:s will do wonders for schools/learning.).

It'll still have a) short battery time b) glossy, highly reflective screen c) +$500 price tag.
