I'm really looking forward to a retina Display iPad. I'm also curious if Siri will debut in the iPad 3.

I just won an iPad2 on Halloween. I was willing to hold out for the iPad3/iPad2s whatever for Retina and better camera. Though my wife was VERY eager to get an iPad now.

That said, if the iPad gets better screen resolution, they need a better camera too, that one is awful. I love to edit photos but need to use the iPhone and then PhotoStream and edit on the iPad.

I love the iPad as is and it is funny but gets me notifications quicker than my iPhone on home WiFi.

Better resolution
Better camera
Fingerprint-less screen?
More capacity

I shudder to think the amount of power that is required to drive a high retina display of that size. In this day and age of powerful gaming computers and consoles, even they are subjugated to 1080p resollution for the most part.

How is a tablet CPU and GPU going to drive such a rich display?

Computers are not subjugated to 1080p,

Consoles are because they are using six year old technology, unlike the iPad 3.

Also console are more than moreful enough to output higher resolutions, games just usually run around 720p becuase console games have complex textures and shading and physics and tons of other stuff, that would not be needed for casual gamers on a retina display iPad 3

By being clever. Things like a website are relatively static. Or when you are reading an eBook, you don't need the high resolution in 30 fps. You could do the effects when you switch pages at low resolution, and then display the final page at high resolution; doesn't matter how long it takes. Your display would look like an iPad 2 while things are in motion, and then suddenly get better.

For games, you can get a display that is slightly better than an iPad 2 with antialiasing with slightly less effort.

About time...

Toshiba just released the ZL2 "Quad HD" 55"TV that has a res of 3840x2160 (incidentally it's glasses-free 3D capable too).

As I thought a long long time ago, you don't have to drive a display at it's default resolution. They could quite easily only run it at full res when it's a static image, but choose to drop the screen res when it comes to fast moving graphics.

iPads do >90% of what 90% of people use their laptops for. If the processors continue improving (to allow more robust photo editing and 'creativity') the world will be using iPads instead of laptops in 3 years time. Don't care about the display. Give me A6!

Good luck selling a 32-bit machine to any pro.

An IPS-panel equipped Macbook "AirPro" 14in. (in a 13" case) 1920p would be nice for me. It would be an ultimate photographer's mobile workstation. I could have fun with it while Apple develops a retina "iOS X" iPad.

Subjugated? >_>

Games also have been getting more demanding since... well, the introduction of the computer. And gaming machines run very demanding games at 2560x1600 w/8x FSAA and 16x Anisotropic filtering enabled... resolution isn't a very important spec.

Because most of what's going on will be 2D-acceleration or OpenGL GUI acceleration?

Ports

I would love to see the iPad 3 with an USB port for hooking up external drives. All of the other tablets have HDMI and USB ports. Why can't Apple. I could care less about the screen give me the ports.

I have no need for a tablet until it runs <<serious>> productivity apps. Super high-res (retina) is welcome too. If Microsoft brings a mobile+desktop OS with Windows 8, I'll certainly buy a Microsoft tablet. Otherwise, if Apple produces an "iOS X" until then, I'll prefer Apple's one as I like OSX Unix/POSIX tools.

Microsoft are working towards that direction. Rumors has it we'll see tablets pop up in approx. 6 months. Then, on top, in 12 months or so, it is believed that WP will switch to the same core with version 8 (NT kernel, rather than CE).

If iPad 3 has retina display I will hold to my plan of "sell the old iPad and buy the new one each year". Now that I retina display on the iPhone 4S I can't believe the difference.

I pulled out my iPod Tough 2G the difference between it's display and my Touch 4G are amazing. I am waiting for the Retinal display in the iPad. I hope they upgrade the Camera the one in my 4G is awful.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Uh... I think that now Apple has pushed iPhone releases into Fall, the iPad will get pushed into the June slot the iPhone used to have. By then, there will be quad-core mobile CPU tech that will be ready.

I think iPod Touch 4G's camera is good for video, but yeah, stills are pretty bad.

Honestly I'm almost sure Apple wants to go Retina with the iPad 3, the question now is can they get enough panels produced in time (and for a suitable price). If they do, and throw an A6 in (kinda required if they want to keep graphics performance with that resolution panel in-line with the iPad 2) then I'll be upgrading on day 1.

You better purchase that upgrade within hour 1 of release or you'll be waiting 4-6 weeks for delivery.

:D

Good to see the analysts out in force proving yet again that they know less than a gypsy staring into a crystal ball.

Lmao

I think AAPLaday hit the nail on the head. It's all pure speculation. Doesn't an early 2012 release mean it will probably be without the A6?

Perhaps, but they could tweak the A4. Furthermore, I do expect SIRI to be part of the iPad experience going forward.

The looming iPad 3 release (hopefully less than four months) is the only thing holding me back from buying an iPad 2 today. Retina display and a bit more speed would make the device perfect.

Ah, man's search for speed... Speed kills, don't you know?

I've been holding off on the iPad until it get's the Retina display. If iPad 3 doesn't have it...guess my year will be 2013.

I don't know...before then it will be something else... better wait until 2014 or later.

At the rate people are grabbing up the SIRI 4S iPhone, it won't be long before kids won't know how to type any more. "Remember when computers had all those keys you used to have to punch with your fingers?"

On a side note, I wish MR would stop showing the Galaxy in this article, looks just like an ipad.

What!! I thought those were iPads! Ohmygawd!

Let me see if I got this right... You want a highly portable iPad, but you want to bedeck it with cables? You want a portable device held down with cables? WTF!!

Apple gives you the iCloud... FREE and you want ports on your portable device so you can hook it to non-portable drives?? Ports are so so so yesterday. I'm surprised you didn't demand a slide-out keyboard and mouse and modem ports too. Oh, and I forgot the built-in thermal paper printer and changeable batteries, true multitasking and Flash support.

Jobs has seen the future and the future doesn't have stinkin' ports. ;)

Hmm

Well, we are at MR after all, to be honest, apart from the display which does interest me, my ipad2 takes second place to my MBA now. I suppose I will buy one, but not until I get back to NY in the new year.

I still use my iPad (it's the only device I put the odd game on, but since I purchased my MBA, it does seem a little unloved and under used.

There are no games on my iMac, MBA or MBP, so if I feel like stomping on bad guy's, zombies etc. I reach for my iPad. Maybe as I come through the "welcome Home Sir" routine in duty free :D

Anyone really believe that Apple is manufacturing and boxing iPad 3s in a warehouse somewhere? 5 Months before launch? Yeah, right.

And you'll find them right beside the Lost Arc of the Covenant ;)
