Following complaints that the new watchOS 3.1.1 update is bricking some Series 2 Apple Watch models, Apple has temporarily pulled the update.

watchOS 3.1.1 is no longer available for download from the Watch app on the iPhone, with watchOS 3.1 listed as the most recent update for those who had not already downloaded and installed 3.1.1.

After installing watchOS 3.1.1, some Apple Watch Series 2 owners had their devices bricked. Affected Apple Watches are displaying a red exclamation mark on the screen that instructs them to visit www.apple.com/help/watch.

apple-watch-brick-800x495.jpg

The site directs Apple Watch owners to perform a force restart of the Apple Watch by holding down the side button and the Digital Crown, and says that if a restart does not work to restore the device, it will need to be taken in for service.

Resetting the Apple Watch has not worked for customers who have had their watches bricked by watchOS 3.1.1, and replacement Apple Watches will be required. Apple retail locations cannot service Apple Watches in store, because access to the diagnostic port (something not done in-store) is required.

Most users who are affected by the problem own an Apple Watch Series 2, and it is not yet clear why the update failed on some devices and not on others. watchOS 3.1.1 will likely be made available again once the bug is cleared up. Customers with an Apple Watch bricked by watchOS 3.1.1 should visit an Apple retail store or contact Apple support.

(Thanks, Manolo!)

[doublepost=1481731831][/doublepost]I am loosing my faith in Apple. Seems they are releasing hardware/software before thorough quality testing. I used to be one of the first to get a new release of their products but not any more. I beta test iOS and OS X software but am considering on opting out of that as well. I switched from MS to Apple because of problems like these. I would like to see the "OLD APPLE COMPANY" back. "LET'S MAKE APPLE GREAT AGAIN" sounds like a catchy phrase.

It's April Fools yearlong at Apple.

The past few news have been, wow, first the macbook battery complaints leading Apple to shamefully hide battery info in the OS, now this.

Amazing.

What's next? Airpodsgate?

Maybe Tim Cook can be cast as Bill Murray in a 2017 remake of Groundhog Day.

The only thing is that by the end of the movie, Tim would actually have to learn to get it right!

This was my experience too. Downloaded the update at work yesterday afternoon, but when I got home at night where I could put my watch back on the charger and stand, and tried to do the update? It kept saying "Verifying..." for a while, followed by reporting that it had no network connection and couldn't update.

It obviously DID have a working connection, so I figured something went wrong with the update. But then I read about it getting rolled back. So now, I'd just like to know how to delete this pending update so it quits taking up space on my iPhone!

i had it downloaded and was about to install it last night before bed, but it wouldn't let me (i guess that's a good thing) ;) i'll wait

Surprising the Watch 2 still has a diagnostic port, which seems to go against the general effort to waterproof the thing.

Good for you?

It doesn't change the fact that it turned people's watches into a piece of metal

I believe they were metal before, unless you bought one of the fancy ceramic ones and then I think it's still ceramic. But if it truly is turning things into metal that weren't before, that's rather cool.

The year end review for Apple 2016 will be a hilarious look back at failure after failure with Apple denying or blaming customers for the issues. 2017 is when it finally comes to a head at Apple. They had a good run.

Yep, that's what happened with me. I'm not worried about the space on my phone though...I have 128GB ;)

For those still having issues, please stop whining.

And complaining.

Why are you here?

Every company/software has problems.

If this was Microsoft, nobody would be so vocal.

Apple will fix it, don't get your panties in a bunch.

I don't have issues; you must be in the minority.

None of this indicates a trend.

From the watch app on your phone, got to settings>general>usage. You will see the update and can delete it from there

I did the update without any problems, but I think activity tracking in broken with this update. Anyone noticed anything with their activity?

Some sleeping hours are counted as "stand" hours after the update. My count for Monday is 20, and 22 for Tuesday this week. I don't think I had this problem before the update or ever.

My Dad and I were talking about the tech leaders meeting with Trump and I commented how I am interested to see what Tim Cook's take on him is (given his stated admiration for Bobby Kennedy and MLK). He said we should get a Ouija board and ask Steve Jobs his opinion. My response was that Steve Jobs would be more interested in discussing the recent quality slips within Apple.
Jobs: What is watchOS 3.1.1 supposed to do?
Team: <Answer>
Job: Then why the F*#$ doesn't it do that?

I believe the point is they aren't Microsoft. And the singlular reason most people pick the Apple ecosystem and pay a premium over Google or Microsoft is that it just f***ing works!

The Tim Cook Apple is riding the brand into the sunset. Seems like over promising and underdelivering is the new norm these days.

Funny how my Apple Watch is locked for only a few minutes when I don’t enter the passcode, then magically unlocks.

Another point for Apple! They are lucky there were alot of iwatch owners

I received my replacement watch. Snapped off the band and put the old one in the box. Peeled off the label to reveal the return label below and sealed it with the included tape. I had to restore my new watch from a backup, but now it's as if the whole thing never happened. I have to say I was happy by the way Apple handled this. I called yesterday morning and before noon today, I was back to normal.

What is it with all the Apple apologists out there. Apple is not some struggling startup like Pebble was. Apple is the preeminent tech company on the planet. AW is the CEO's product and Series 2 is the current flagship. Damn straight they should beta test the heck out of it. Yes, this is embarrassing for Apple but also seems to be more of the same mediocrity that has creeped into Apple of the last couple of years.

Beta test? I think they have. Are you expecting every single watch produced to be tested for every future upgrade? I mean the watches affected were working out of the box; they were affected after the update so no one could tell those specific watches would glitch. Again no one is apologizing on behalf of Apple it's a given that these glitches happen. It's a small sample of all the Series 2's that were sold that were affected.

Can you explain why it is ok because it hasn't bricked every Apple Watch in existence? It has also got zero to do with manufacturing.

Pebble sold out to fitbit because it was in trouble, they are hardly a great example.

It has everything to do with the manufacturer/parts or else EVERY series 2 watch would have been bricked. Apple is taking care of it from the reports I've heard of those affected. I'm not saying that it's okay; I am saying that as long as Apple takes care of it then nothing to worry about. There were lemons with every thousand or so Macs produced during the Jobs era post 1999 as well as faulty iPods, iPhones, etc. etc. I remember my screen on my iPhone 5 popping off in one corner. I brought it to the Apple Store and in 30 min. it was good to go. People just seem to want to bitch about this company for some reason. As for Pebble, I like the watch. It works and it was inexpensive. They are a good example as they make smartwatches.

We all pay a premium for Apple products with one of the reasons being,"It just works."

Sorry, it's just this kind of BS that made me get a Pixel. Dodgy software updates released and pulled, losing the headphone jack and not having a BT headphone accessory ready in time to go with it, not being able to plug an iPhone into a new MacBook because of USB-C-only ports, RIDICULOUSLY expensive new laptops... Makes me genuinely sad. I used to love being able to recommend Apple to friends - its products as well as the company. I'm not sure I can honestly do that any more. Love my Mac Mini and 11" Air - just not sure what I'm going to do when they die...
This. when my contract is up in 2 years, unless iPhones have usb c as the charging port, or they somehow bring back the headphone jack, I'm going to seriously consider a pixel.

Yep, good for me considering I've had other Apple products get bricked. Hopefully Apple will get those who were not so fortunate a fix or replacement. :)

But that really is absolutely completely irrelevant, isn't it. It's been widely reported that some update successfully, and others end up with a bricked watch. The fact that you updated successfully does nothing to help everyone else, unless of course a congratulations for dumb luck is what is being sought.
It's not irrelevant to me or those that had success. I was just sharing with others in the forum. I hope others that weren't so lucky get their issue resolved quickly. :)

It has everything to do with the manufacturer/parts or else EVERY series 2 watch would have been bricked.

It's much more likely to be software related than hardware related. Software differences between watches will be much more variable than hardware.
