They do know that the SF area is a large earthquake certainty area, right?
How could they? The company was only created there and has always been headquartered and mainly based there for decades.

It will be a giant repair center for broken Lightning cables ;)

No seriously, this looks like a possible R&D facility for an entirely new - and massive - product category, such as an electric car.

Why would Apple otherwise buy such a massive area the size of its new spaceship campus?

And why would Apple buy this area in 2015 when the spaceship campus isn't finished until late 2016?

It all points to a major long-term initiative (a car will likely take until 2020 or later to complete if project 'Titan' gets the final green light) in my opinion.

They found how long it takes and how much it costs to build more space and lease crazy expensive stuff in the mean time. I wonder if their real estate costs all-in equal their salary expenses, just for the endpoint seat space?

And, yes, within 7 years we will see an Apple REIT spin-off to maintain margins and growth.

Near the airport? Obviously for :apple:plane R&D. Now the stawk can head for $200 easy.

Good move. This properly was suppose to be the new eBay campus with signs on the property saying so going back five years. The signs went away two years ago as eBay pulled out of the deal amid the drama of spinning off PayPal.

For a while it was also looked at for the new San Jose Earthquakes soccer stadium. That fell through with the local businesses not wanting a sports stadium so close over security concerns of the unwashed fans too close to tech buildings.

Apple is a good fit for the area. For many east bay and far east Santa Clara Country resident employees, this is a godsend cutting commutes to Cupertino.

Land will be used as the burial site for all the unsold Apple Watches a la the Atari game cartridge E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (and Apple Lisa). :p

Lol. Actually if they obsess about making the car thin like they do with everything else, we all are going to need a few runs around the track to fit into the Apple Car.

Well at least if it's designed for Jony Ive, we have the reassurance that even the most hardened buttergolem will be able to squeeze in :D

And yet people are still complaining they can't find a job in the US.

Oh yes because the U.S. isn't a country of over 350 million people that grows exponentially, it's a nation of perhaps 150k who either work for or will be working for apple...

The CEO of Samsung announced this morning that they purchased 44 acres in a better location.

Could be that Apple board has just decided to park some spare cash into real estate.
As an Apple investor I like have some land in the Bay Area.

Plans are to expand the PR/marketing department, because a large force is necessary to cover for Tim Cook's incompetence, bean counting, and downgrading/crippling of products.

No need to cover for Tim, as long as the CEOs of competing companies are even more incompetent at getting their company to make stuff that returns a big enough profit.

One of the better cheap shots I've seen on here.

FYI, the Lisa stock was sold off as the Mac XL where they nearly broke even. Been told they are quite the collector times now.

Apple, please buy my house for $13.8 million. It's a solid deal. I'll even donate the 3.8 million to charity. I already have a server rack in place with gigabit connectivity from my ISP. You can easily serve a few customers or operate an AppleCare call center here.

Real estate in the better parts of Silicon Valley is a kids glove blood sport. Seen a couple of agents from back east move out here and ended up with nearly zero clients from up and hard selling too much.
