I wonder when the iPad guys are going to start calling computers legacy hardware, lol.
Once Apple makes an iPad with a 30" screen option and close to 4k res then offer up a Cloud render farm...now we're talking :)
But then I would also like my flying car now :p

A Mac Pro is a great thing, but the price makes it so niche that sales volumes make it vulnerable.

I do think making it configurable for high-end consumer components would broaden appeal and make survival much more likely.

Apple is not in the business of asking us what we want. They are in the business of telling us what we need. The view at the top, moving forward, seems unclear at best.

Apple will never offer a generic upgradable Mac like a generic PC tower. It does not fit in with their "want" image these days. It would just be a niche product like the Mac Pro but at least the Mac Pro has a specific purpose.

I am afraid that the "headless iMac" already exists in the form of the single CPU Mac Pro, people will still buy it, as evidenced by its ludicrous price throughout the moons.

So true, when one reads the various threads about new product, we witness how many people feel safe & secure being dictated to.

It must be the alure they feel by not having to think for themselves. It's amazing how many admit they have no clue, and welcome being told what to use, and how to use it.

The power & control Apple has over many of their users never ceases to amaze me.

As secret as Apple is, I am kind of surprised that there have been absolutely zero hints at what they might be thinking about doing here. It's almost like the fate of the MP isn't even on the table yet. I really would bet we would have heard something by now. Is it possible that this is just in deep limbo?

Apple pretty much never announces hardware plans in advance. Just before any mac update there are always zero hints of what is coming and when.

A big issue this time around has been the next generation of intel chips, obviously Apple isn't going to update the MP before those are available in the quantity they need.

I don't get why we get information and parts leaks day and night for ios devices, yet barely a peep about mac updates. Even then we've seen evidence of retina displays coming to the mac lines. Still though not a single inside peep, part leak, or anything regarding the mac pro. I can't believe that apple doubles down on more internal security for mac updates then they do for the iphone.

iPhone updates are often a new design, there are multiple factories making them and they have to ramp up months in advance so lots of potential for leaks.

Many mac updates are just new internal components, sometimes just new CPU. Lead time is far less and the people building them aren't seeing obvious visual differences.

With something like a new laptop or iMac redesign, leaks would be more likely but a Mac Pro update would be much easier to keep quiet.

Please don't

Even though I own an iPhone and iPad, I still love Mac Pro and use it almost everyday.

Apple may be trying to look at the future but customers like us will still have so much love and affection for a desktop.

This news is very sad....:(

Cut out the price of the screen on a 27" iMac, take the guts and convert it to a desktop at this price and watch it sell. $2200 - $1000 = $1200 i7 Mac Pro

That is how they save their Pro line and bump the sales up considerably. Why is this SIMPLE solution so hard for them to figure out?

They have no desire whatsoever to be in that space. Why is that SIMPLE idea so hard for you to understand? ;-)

Huh? You mean the desktop space? If so then that's why they'll kill it off (like they've been doing). Care to elaborate on what you mean?

The traditional desktop (mid-size tower) space. They're perfectly content positioning OS X in 5 spaces where they can do exceptionally well.

1 - all-in-one desktop
2 - small form factor desktop
3 - ultralight laptop
4 - traditional laptop
5 - workstation

(and of course their iOS options)

A mid range tower has no place. It would overlap with the function of the Mac Mini and iMac and base Mac Pro. Also, it would be a very boring product, Apple does not make "boring" products.

If Apple did make a mid-range tower, something about it would be ridiculous to justify a ridiculous cost.

I am afraid the mid range headless Mac already exists: Single CPU Mac Pro and as you can see, they add an immense Apple tax.

Financially, it's the right thing for them to do, but it would make a lot of people very unhappy and that's not what you want when you're trying to sell products. I hope they keep it, even though I'll never get one. It's the last true "pro" machine they have.

Midrange tower has no place? You're confusing that with Apple not wanting to make it, users certainly have a place for it. I'd argue that it would probably sell better than either the workstation or mini desktop (which is a product that hardly anyone really needs). I bet it would cut into sales of iMacs, there are plenty of people who buy those simply because Apple doesn't sell what they really want so they settle for the closest thing they do offer.

Plus the other products benefit from Apple having a complete product line, when there are gaping holes it diminishes the appeal of the whole product line.

New article from AI, totally agree with it. It's just a matter of time.

No Mac Pro announcement at WWDC 2012 = No New Mac Pro.

Nuff Said... Sadly enough :(

You will see a silent update to the Mac Pro right after WWDC.

Why ?

USB 3.0 mainly.

They have to announce it for the Laptop line they will show off at WWDC first. Apple will not announce USB 3.0 on Apple hardware via a Mac Pro update.

I don't think Apple is very excited about usb3, and I don't think they will make a big deal about it

I really hope they keep the pro line. I was going to make the leap from windows to Mac at the June . The pro attracted me because I prefer laptops and the MacBook air doesn't really attract me because of the money they are asking for a laptop with only 128gb. Don't want to have to carry a external hard drive everywhere I go.

If they don't announce a new pro June 11 I will just stick to my dell laptop.
