"quietly" releases the update? sounds pretty insidious, doesn't it. yet when have firmware updates ever been launched with great fanfare?

smh

You don't remember the swanky press event in Times Square when Apple updated the Airport extremes to firmware 7.7.6?

Come to think of it, I don't either....

:p

I think.. but not sure this is the correct way to get the pods and case working properly with regards to battery.

Following the firmware update I led the case and pods run to 0% and shut down. I then plugged in and left to charge.
Once charged I then reset the pods (flashing amber light etc) but kept the cable in.

I manually 'forgot' the AirPods as a BT device in settings on my phone and gave it 20 mins so be removed from iCloud and all the stuff deleted off the servers and sync up etc.

Then once I'd waited I unplugged and re-paired. I've checked a few times today and the pods and case are still at 100%.

A. Freedom of moving around without needing your phone in your pocket.
B. No cords to get tangled or damaged.
C. Wired headphones always seem to snag on everything and yank on my ears (especially when doing things like shoveling... the wire gets caught easily on my jacket zipper)
D. Light weight. Can hardly feel them there.
E. The corded headphones brush up against my face and that's slightly uncomfortable

All sound like great reasons for my personal use case as well. I really can't wait until version two comes out or they update firmware with volume and skip controls!

Yup. I have been completely pleased with the pair I bought (and they get great battery life, too).

They already do, no need to address in the firmware.
Wow they defy physics! Impressive.

Do people really buy these for sound quality reasons?
Nope

They already sound better than wired EarPods or my old $200 Powerbeats.
Powebeats will be trumped by most entry level buds for sure.

seems to me the update has stopped battery drain.

Checked the pods 3x today and they are still at 100%. It's been around 24 hours.

I don't own AirPods but just check my Powerbeats 3, it is also same feature firmware auto update. Not sure what is the original firmware and got any update changes or not. Unbelievable now headset also got firmware update! Cool!

Is anyone still getting after the firmware update double tapping I activate Siri, not getting a conformation "bing", but the phone is in this limbo mode with nothing being sent to Siri? I usually have to unpair or reset the phone to get it to work again.

Get a modern, dual-band router, and make sure your MBP connects to the 5 GHz WiFi. That won't help if the 2.4 GHz band is swamped by other devices/neighbors; but it will remove at least one source of 2.4 GHz "pollution" for the AirPods to deal with.

Well, my local evil cable company forced some non-5GHz crap router on me. While I indeed could put a second box next to it I'd rather save the environment and monthly electricity bill as otherwise WiFi just works.

And why should I due to Apple's design decision change my internet connection, beside I could not control it in hotels, cafés, airplanes, work etc. anyways?

Stick around with an open mind. There's no telling what you might learn.

Not for me. They connected a little faster, but audio is completely distorted.

Do you think having too many Bluetooth devices could be the issue? I have Magic KB, Mouse, and Trackpad all going.

I lost the (near?)lossless aptX codec on my mac, if some other device was connected before the headset (sony mdr-100abn). It's a software bug

I've had this same issue on my 7 Plus, and I can confirm that it occurs specifically when the phone is doing something (I've noticed that certain apps seem to exacerbate the problem further). I had the issue under 10.2 with the AirPods out of the box. I replaced the AirPods and the issue continued. I even took my 7 Plus to the Genius Bar to do a diagnostic on the bluetooth antenna; no problems were found. So at the moment there doesn't seem to be a solution.

I've also reset the bluetooth, repaired the AirPods, hard-restarted the phone, and reset network settings, all to no avail. Through my own testing, I have not noticed the problem on other devices such as my iPad and/or MacBook Pro.

Unfortunately, the next step of testing would be to back-up and restore the iPhone, and I can't quite bring myself to do that as it's a huge pain in the butt (and still might not fix the problem).

Glad to see I'm not the only one with the problem. Anyone else experiencing issues like this and/or have any solutions?

It's weird that 10.2.1 fixed the issue for me. And I do take some comfort in knowing that I'm not crazy and it's not just typical bluetooth signal issues.

Though I'd prefer if neither of us had the problem.

Save the environment and monthly electricity bill? For something that draws less power than an electric clock? Okrightsure...

BTW, regardless of your attempting to lay blame where it absolutely doesn't belong, this has NOTHING to do with Apple. AFAIK, Bluetooth IS 2.4 GHz, PERIOD, at least in the U.S. So, if you have BT headsets, or are DESIGNING BT headsets (or any BT gear) they WILL be 2.4 GHz.

And Apple similarly can't control your WiFi environment, nor your evil cable company. But if you whine to the evil cable company about Wifi issues due to overcrowded 2.4 GHz band problems, they MIGHT be able to bring you a nice dual-band Router that they have available for those contingencies. That won't do anything for when you are out-and-about (but again, that's out of Apple's hands); but it WOULD make your life at home SO much better... And not just because of the AirPods.

Try not being so negative next time, too...

It's early and I only got to test for a little bit, but the 10.3 beta 2 seems to have fixed the issue for me again.

AirPods have no touch interface so there will not be any "gestures". Apple came up with a clever way to use motion sensors to detect taps and convert those into a simple command. But this will not support an expanding range of touch inputs in the future.
Bummer! Hopefully they can do something with 2, 3, 4 taps. I love them, but they do need something more to really be complete.

For anyone wondering, this update did indeed fix the battery drain issue, which was a bit problem for me. Before, it used to drain about 15-20% per 24 hours, and now it maybe moves 1% in that amount of time if I don't use them, which is how I would have expected them to behave. Been keeping a close eye on them for the past week and this truly is fixed.

If I leave the airpods outside the case they drain a lot but if I put them back into the case when I'm not using them they charge up and the case has minimal battery drain, maybe 1% per day. I charged the case up to 100% last Thursday night and I've recharged my airpods about 4 times since. My case is still at 32% after 8 days of use.

?? A wall clock runs on a AA or so battery for years. A WiFi router draws quite some content power out of the grid day and night, ...

Apple did not had to nix the headphone jack, simple as that. I do not ask them to take it away from the iPhone 7.
As I have no other WiFi problem I do not see how that would "my life at home SO much better".

And your use-case is everyone's use-case, right?

I do not know a single normal user who would spend money and buy a second power wasting dust collector wifi access point next to their wifi cable router.
No, you should just call tech support for your evil cable company and tell them you need to REPLACE your wifi router with a DUAL BAND router!

Sheesh!

WTH? Last time I check there was not a universal right to demand a dual band router.
A tech company offers you adequate working device. Why should they replace your router for free just because your earbuds? reality distortion field .oO?
