Mine updated and I never noticed. I do remember seeing the older firmware in the about menu too. Pretty seamless Apple I'm impressed.

EDIT:// After trying them on my Mac they do seem to connect a lot faster and have less drop outs when playing directly from iTunes (as opposed to the Volume menubar dropdown). Good update :)

I checked my pods after reading this article and mine were already updated.

7+ on 10.2.1 and was connected to wifi most of the day.

I've got two pairs here and I've done absolutely everything to get them to update but nothing is happening.
You don't have to do anything. They will update automatically when they feel like it.

Just leaving them by themselves in the charging case, with the lid closed, and they will update on their own.

Many hours later, still nothing.

So I tried with an iPad instead. Put Case on charge with AirPods inside, connected to iPad, and it updated instantly. Both pairs did. Just a bug on my iPhone I guess.

As soon as they get volume control and skip song via tapping or gestures... I'm in.

I heard that the audio and video is synced when you watch Youtube or watch a movie via video player/N player/VLC etc...

Is that true?

whole point of truely wireless is well..truely wireless and the beatsx aren't truely wireless.

for daily use and around the house the the sound on the airpods are fine and if i need more then the solo3 are there.
Airpods give you the option of being completely wireless or you can buy a wire. They are more versatile than the beats X. Anyhow I have some beats solo headphones and they are ok. Prefer airpods/EarPods though.

what does dropping the headphone jack on the iphone have to do with you having audio issues on your Macbook???

This was not about audio issues on a Macbook, but bluetooth audio glitches with real world WiFi load. Or do you watch Netflix with a Gigabit Ethernet dongle (which I obviously have in the office, though).
Do you believe on an iPhone 7 receiving the same WLAN interference I would have less dropouts?

PS: I was one of the unfortunate ones to buy the 1st Apple Bluetooth headsets for the original iPhone. The audio quality was so bad, I never really used it. It is still a decoration piece on my Apple Cinema Display stand. The quality was apparently so bad, IIRC it was silently discontinued rather quickly, like 6 months or so.

  1. Having the DAC external to the phone means headphone manufacturers can use whatever quality DAC they'd prefer rather than the one that Apple chooses. This is a win for premium headphone manufactures and for audiophiles.
  2. Charging is really a non-issue for these. They charge so fast, and do it automatically in their carrying case.
  3. Losing them isn't an issue either if you're an adult and know how to keep track of your stuff. Keeping them in their carrying case (see #2) can help with this and it fits easily and non-conspicuously into your pockets.
  4. The AirPods sound better than the EarPods. I get every phone every year, so I've had every set of EarPods Apple's put out. The AirPods have a fuller sound to them and generally sound nicer.
  5. No wires is such a win. Huge. I can walk around my house listening to whatever I'm listening to without having to make sure I have my phone physically on me. No wires to snag on things, which is amazing. Also, and I know this sounds minor, but not having the wire hanging down the side of your face and down your body feels very freeing.

Yup. I have been completely pleased with the pair I bought (and they get great battery life, too).

Does it make them sound as good as wired headphones?

They already do, no need to address in the firmware.

It certainly seems to be synched to some extent when using hardware playback, on os x too.

not sure. firmware update expectation means that going forward Apple and other companies have an excuse to release half baked products.

My favourite headphone of all time is the Sony MDR 7506. Mine is close to 10 years old now. It's perfect. No firmware update required.

I'm worried that everything is moving away from that.

Sure, some things are inherently better with perpetual software improvement. The iPhone is obviously testament to that.
But headphones? I'm not sure they belong in the same bucket.

They all already do release beta products...at least this offers some hope.

And your worry is well-placed, because everything is moving away from things like that, whether or not there's any real benefit. :-(

My both iPhones aren't showing AirPods under General->About even I restarted both of them
1: Turn off one of the iPhones
2: On the other iPhone make sure it is connected to wifi
3: Verify in Settings/Bluetooth there is a connection to the AirPods
4: Make sure case is charged to 50% or above, if not plug in case to charge
5: With AirPods in case and case open, go to Settings/General/About and under SEID you should see AirPods
6: If you see AirPods in Settings/General/About leave it on this screen for a few minutes. It should dissappear and reappear with latest update.

NOTE: If the case is closed when you go to Settings/General/About you will not see AirPods line item under SEID.

No amount of updates can address the fundamental, fatal flaw in AirPods. Try this: with the pods in your ears and a tune playing, take your hands and press the pods into your ears as firmly as you can. At least if the anatomy of your ears is anything like mine, you will be startled at how vastly the bass improves and you'll appreciate what your missing with them loosely perched on the outside of your ears. This is the incurable penalty you pay for the loose sealing..
The bass increases, but I wouldn't necessarily say it improves.

It feels like Apple boosted the bass to compensate for the loose fitting? So if you just wear them as intended then you get a neutral but very solid sound. I like it.

I have done that before hand. It is not showing either but all sorted now. It was because of my iMac playing up.

This is nice to know! I just had a great day with my Father and BLUETOOTH 4.x technology.

I took him to the doc, and parked right in front of the waiting area of the clinic in the handicap spot. The day was nice so I only had my sweat pants on. Many of you who have an iPhone Plus may know you can't really wear sweat pants and POCKET your Plus, without your sweats sagging. Well I left the iPhone Plus in the car, we went inside and we were sitting about 20 feet away from the car parked outside with a window blocking. I fired up the Watch with AirPods in ears and crystal clear music began playing from my playlist. All with the iPhone just sitting in the car. It was great... loving life like the good ole days when the iPod first came out, just in a different way...

OK can somebody answer me - on a brand new product how the heck did we get to 3.5.1 so quickly?
