What a suprise to see the white MacBook get some of the components used in the unibody version-and now one less Mac that does not use Intel's intergrated graphics (the mini is the remaining Mac that uses Intel's intergrated graph).

Now my early 2008 macbook feels old :(
I'm quite surprised by this update though, never saw that one coming

This was quite a surprise. Looks like Apple wants to entirely standardize on the NVidia chipset and quickly.

It's not sub-thousand dollar. Please don't try to say that $999 is under a thousand. Unless Apple sold these tax-free.

Apple has no future-proof computer under $1,000.

That's why you buy it in Oregon. Or that other state on the East Coast with no tax. Or Amazon (free shipping ftw). So, yes, the WhiteBook is under $1,000. It just depends on how/where you buy it.

My biggest question is:

Will it accept and properly address 8GB (2x4GB DDR2)?

I am thinking about buying base model w/ Applecare - add 500GB hard drive, and 8GB (2x4GB) DDR2 memory.

I just bought the aluminium one. the only diference is friggin' 40 gig of hard drive and it's 300$ more!!! I think I just wasted a lot of money:mad:

Pondering

Now i'm concerned i bought a white early 2008 macbook with 2.4GHz but a few things have been going wrong with it mainly the case started becoming loose and falling apart after 2 months, and also several system crashes(probably due to software but still irratating and a very annoying glich in itunes when i use the vizualizer, it freezes and then starts playign the vizualizer, any other Macbooks using GMA x3100 having this problem????
so i'm considerin any chance of being able to take mine in and complain about build quality and maybe get a replacement, but if i did in terms of replacement what would they offer if its this update i would loose 0.4GHz but better graphics?

You had a simple software issue and they can fix a loose case. Just because something new came out does not mean you have to con your way into getting it. If you really want it, sell yours and purchase the new model.

read the thread better, there are still, for some, advantages over the plastic macbook. Your laptop hasn't lost any value, IMO. The only better choice, for me, would have been a refurb for $1099

I guess that's better value for your money, but why do they do this?
It's as if they can't let go of the previous gen. and are not completely faithful in the new unibodies. Let go of the old in one felt swoop, don't slowly let it linger there amidst the new ones. I feel like this spec bump undermines the alu MBs.

Just a thought.

This is exactly what I wanted to replace my aging 1st generation Macbook, the unibodys were disappointing due to the removal of the firewire, and the markup on the price in the Australian store.

This is a perfect deal for me, and I can probably offload my current Macbook to recoup at least some of the cost of the new one.

Anyone know if the new Macs are shipping with iLife09 yet? This is the only thing stopping me from ordering the new Macbook right now, Ive already cancelled my iLife09 preorder.

Not necessarily. You're also paying for aluminum design/build. LED display, better external monitor support. The aluminum ones are still justified, to me at least.

Plus I've heard and seen pics of the white macbooks showing palm wear and stuff like that.

The 9400M G at the $999 price is worth it. Just upgrade to 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive yourself off of NewEgg for less then $200.

And that's $200 combined.

Remember when Apple used to update the Mac Mini?

Not really. It's been the redheaded stepchild of Apple since its introduction. Any has never really understood its market or the users

Indeed, as surprising as it's welcome! The Mini will surely follow soon for the same reasons. Intel halted production of GMA950 a while back & with Snow Leopard due in months, Apple simply have to update or terminate.

I still have a software issue it wont go away its a really annoying glitch, plus i forgot to mention the defect in the glossy coating which has been there since i got it and it can't be an ordinary smudge from fingers and stuff because I can't get rid of it even with lcd wipes and stuff.
Either way going to an apple store to get it fixed is a while away from me and i don't usually have time to go so far.

Bah screw it. Going to return the refurb and get the new one.

Edit: I probably won't be able to just remove my upgraded HD from this refurb and stick it into the newer one and have it work, right?

The update probably lowers costs for apple, its economies of scale. As the GPU and CPU are the same as the base unibody, they can buy more of them in bulk

I think this is great, it makes it way more competitive against windows laptops and not so stuck in the past like it was with intel graphics. I might replace my current macbook with this. I wish it came in black though, I think the black would have fitted in with the rest of the mac line up better and matched the black and aluminium colour scheme
