I still have a software issue it wont go away its a really annoying glitch, plus i forgot to mention the defect in the glossy coating which has been there since i got it and it can't be an ordinary smudge from fingers and stuff because I can't get rid of it even with lcd wipes and stuff.
Either way going to an apple store to get it fixed is a while away from me and i don't usually have time to go so far.

Thats a big 10-4, they can proably fix all of it, including the software item. Sometimes they work some strange Voo-Doo there.

It looks like Intel has really hit a wall with notebook processors.

I bought my black MacBook two years ago this month and it has the same speed Core 2 Duo processor. I'm sure this one has a higher speed FSB and more cache, but still.

At the rate Intel was moving two years ago, I would have thought we would have quads and 3Ghz dual-cores across most of the product line by now.

I think that by now Intel should have already broken the 3.0 GHz barrier. I mean, the last processors to reach those speeds were the Pentium 4's which almost reached 4 GHz.

Intel should really look into faster CPUs now that the FSB bottleneck is over in the new Nehalem architecture. I mean, its almost 2010 and we are still playing with 2.0 GHz CPUs? What the hell, we should have 2.8 GHz as a minimum now a days.

My guess comes from the fact that we really are hitting a serious roadblock in processor technology.

Take my iBook G4. 1.33 GHz. It's four years old, and less then 1 GHz behind this updated MB.

Now why is this? For one thing, it's getting harder to keep bumping up clock speed with the current technology we have. Too much heat. In the future there will be a solution I'm sure. But things have been slowing down a little bit lately as far as clock speed goes.

Second, people are figuring out that higher clock speed does not necessarily mean better performance, so chip companies have less of an incentive to bump those speeds up.

Hope I cleared that up for you.
There is no roadblock. Intel doesn't sell 3+Ghz Mobile Quads because they don't have to. AMD doesn't have anything fast enough to keep up at current speeds, why waste time binning the CPU's for a higher speed (which we all know they can run at just fine)?

The real trick is adding more cores. That is where the "Ghz myth" has gone.

Apple isn't using faster chips due to thermal design issues. Maybe when people stop feeling warm in the pants over thin notebooks we will get systems that can use all the latest and greatest in CPU designs. (Same goes for the iMac...)

wow the nVidia upgrade is very nice, that was the big reason I wanted the aluminum macbooks. damn this knocks down the price of my macbook further for resale. =( *tear* only got another month before I can save up some money for it.

Firewire kept alive

I think this is because they are realizing they need a low cost machine that has firewire. People still use this for Audio recording primarily - all the main interfaces are firewire. Still think it was foolish for them to drop it on the new Macbooks - should have put one port - what would it cost them $10.

It's not sub-thousand dollar. Please don't try to say that $999 is under a thousand. Unless Apple sold these tax-free.

Apple has no future-proof computer under $1,000.

I was being a bit facetious, but the $999 price point is the lowest Apple has ever gone on a notebook, for the most recent whitebook and the iBook before the 1st gen MB) and that was my real point. As far as an Apple product goes, that is as "future-proof" and sub-thousand dollar as they will get. I don't think it's new to anyone that Apple products come with a premium and, IMO at least, that is a premium worth paying.

Did anyone see this coming? Seriously, the nvidia on the whitebooks? If so let me know what you think about an update on the new aluminum macbooks lol b/c I want to get one in a month and hope they do update w/ either a processor bump or something!!

The plastic MacBooks never had problems with heat, the glass trackpad is fine but not that big of a deal, the unibody is nice but mainly cosmetic upgrade.

I think the biggest shortfall of the white MB right now is the screen, it has smaller viewing angle and is not LED-backlit. OH, and the white MB keyboard doesn't feel nearly as good as the new ones IMO.

The white MB is pretty attractive now with the upgrades...

I doubt anything will come soon. We're only halfway through their cycle at best, and there's nothing much to upgrade them with, unless Apple's going to upgrade the macbook pro mid cycle too.

Best value

What would be a better value: A refurbished White Macbook 2.4GHz or the new updated white 2.0GHz Macbook?

Thx

Now with Nvidia graphics and 2gb memory standard

EDIT: The US macbook white specs page has been updated. Currently, only the US store and website shows the updated specs.

New features:
New packaging (similiar to the new notebooks)
Nvidia graphics
2gb DDR2 standard
2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1066 FBS
iLife '09
Firewire :p

This might be Apple's way of thanking those who helped make the MacBook very popular. I guess they want to ensure that people are ready for 10.6 when it hits retail, but atleast they kept it with FW400.

Depends on what you want it for. The new one would have a better GPU, though on the other hand if you actually need to use the GPU for anything you shouldn't be getting the Macbook to begin with. so...

Personally if they were the same price I'd probably get the new one, but then I don't like used stuff.

Well do you need the bump in video? If not then I say the 2.4ghz is a nice option, really depends on what you want to do with the machine. I, myself, would upgrade to the better video card.

True, and it's a very cheap and popular model.

Not really true. The GPU makes a very big difference, even to casual web browsing. And one might desire the GPU for occasional gaming, but not rely on it for a living.

Separately, one might think the smaller/lighter form-factor of the MB is preferable to the MBP... not to mention the much smaller price.

They could put a 3D JumboTron in the aluminum MacBook with an 800 gazillion yottaflops processor and I still wouldn't be able to plug my Digi 003 into it.

I can however use the 003 with my Key Lime 366mHz iBook.

Progress?

I haven't studied it and have no idea if it would work, but... have you seen this? Firewire to USB 2.0 DV Transfer Cable It may just be for DV, and it does only say it supports XP, but... seems interesting nonetheless.

I think the updated 2.0Ghz would be of better value. Sure you lose out on .4Ghz, have your cache bumped down from 4mb to 3, and have to pay more (maybe $100 or $150 more?) but you gain a bump in the graphics and the front side bus.

Timing is important too. If you were person who bought a plastic Macbook lets say 2 or 3 months ago I'd say it wouldn't be worth the hassle to try to sell it used and upgrade. But if you just bought a plastic recently before this little update and can still return it (like me) or are still deciding on what to get (like you) I would go with the 2.0Ghz.

Look like a great little notebook now for $1000. I personally think that the unibody is worth the $300. It's aluminum and has a way better track pad, and runs way cooler. But I'd grab one of the low end ones if I couldn't afford the unibody for sure.

This MacBook is arguably the best value computer Apple's got right now.

I think you are right. This is the best value machine Apple sells right now. I would think the LCD on the unibody might be better, and there's the case cracks issue on the white body, but for Apple, that's a pretty good value. In a few months, when the refurbs start hitting, I've got to imagine those refurbs will go instantly.
