Did both accessories get the speed improvement? Or only the Airport Extreme?

Considering a Time Capsule 2 GB over an Airport Extreme + USB disk so could be good to know :)

The TC supposedly also got the more powerful radio. I was contemplating the same as you, but pulled the trigger on the 2TB TC.

Alright, good to know then.

Out of curiosity, why did you decide against it? AEBS + 2 TB WD USB-HD would cost me 318 bucks and TC would cost me 362 bucks.

Pro:
Less additional clutter and just one box.

Cons:
Costs 45 bucks more (that I can't do much with).

It did, or at least, mine has (bought yesterday).

I already had 2TB NAS with RAID-1, but I wanted to keep that for my media files and Windows backups.

Trying to decide if I should order online today or wait for them to be shipped to the store, if they haven't been already. I don't know how much tax they charge online.

Regardless, kind of a lackluster update. It will be interesting to see if a firmware update will be new features after Lion or iOS 5 comes out.

I thought they charged tax based on your zip code? I could be wrong though.

still have my APE in the packaging waiting for some clarification. Probably look back on all this mess and ask if it was all necessary.. oh the joys of being an apple enthusiast.

No kidding! The FCC documentation that has been posted here and elsewhere is specifically for the Airport Extreme (model A1408) and not a Time Capsule. The report does state a distinct uptick in power on both the 2.4 and 5.8GHz bands. It's likely that the Apple customer service people chatting online are only scripted to discuss what is listed on Apple's technical page for a given product. Nitty gritty details like output power measured in mW and dB aren't something they're prepared to delve into. Like you though, I'd love to see whether there's any appreciable difference in signal range/strength on this model over the A1354.

Basically the same as Fat jez said. I already have a 2TB external eSATA drive that I take back and forth to work with media and backups for my PCs, but I will also connect it to the TC as an external drive. But, I wanted a dedicated drive for my iMac and liked the integrated concept. I had put it off for quite a while as I needed 2TB, but $500 was ridiculous (and still is for 3TB).

I said screw it and opened it. I dont need more power from it I just was curious if there were hidden features.

I'm wondering the same thing. People are reporting fairly significant speed/range increases with the new AEBS, but I have yet to see anyone compare the new Time Capsule to the previous generation. Can anyone offer any insight?

You say "no improvements" ? Take that!

Additional: from the above testing, I conclude that it is possible to make AEBS work in 802.11n-ONLY mode (HT40)

Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
Test Report - Previous version
Test Report - Current version

And that is not because of six antennas: I have checked the sources above, there are still three antennas.

Any reports if this improvement is also included with the new Time Capsule models? There are very strict government rules in regards of antenna power outputs so might it be that even though the US model got these massive improvement it might be the same for EU models etc..?

Routers like WNDR3700v1 / WNDR37AV, WNDR3700v2, WNDRMac / WNDR3800 and WNDR4000 got the option for country selection within the firmware that'll actually change the antenna power outputs to comp with your countries legal regulations.

Just got mine today. Very fast, both network and hard drive speeds. Way faster than my old AEBS+USB Hard disk combo.

Mine arrived yesterday, but I am on the road so cannot test it. Am hoping that it will fix the 802.11n performance problem I am having with my early 2011 MBP. With my current (older) access point I get 1/5th the speed with 802.11n that I get with 802.11g on my 2011 system. Apple support wants to blame my router, so will be able to get that out of the equation as soon as I get home and can test the TC... Am not optimistic that it will fix the issue (LOTS of posts on the wifi performance thread at the Apple Discussions site about erratic performance), but ya never know....

Apple Online Rep says No Upgrade to Airport Extreme

I was just on the online apple store ready to purchase my new airport extreme (model number MD031LL/A). Just to make sure it was the latest model i went into the online chat option and asked the apple rep. She stated "There has been some confusion on this issue. There was no upgrade to the airport extreme last week. Just changed the model number and included gift wrapping."

As a result, i have put off my purchase until i am sure i am purchasing the latest generation with a specs bump.

Model number MD031LL/A is the new model and it's been proven to have a spec bump - both via the FCC filing (which is required because it's a more powerful device) and from websites who have confirmed it.

I picked one up on Monday at Frys and N devices in other rooms do appear to be snappier than with my previous AE, which I expected thanks to the better performance.

The Apple reps may not be fully informed on what changes have been undertaken.
