Used to buy Applecare+ for the iPhones when it covered only 2 years.
The issue is that if you're careful & lucky with your iPhone, you may never have issues within the 2 years.
The problem is that, like many things that people had warranties with, many problems occur After the warranty ends. The best examples are issues with appliances & automobiles.
Many people have experienced repair issues for things just days or weeks after the warranty on those insured items just happened to have ended. Welcome to life!
Now Apple allows you to buy extended Applecare+ warranty for whenever on the newer iPhones.
General rule is just take care of your possessions and hopeful that it takes care of you. That's often applied to vehicles.
Put the iPhone into a case and use a screen protector. No one nowadays flash their new iPhone bare as some prized possession anymore considering how generally common it is in many societies.

Did I miss where you cannot get the standard AppleCare+ plan any longer? I just went through the iPhone buying process online to test and it only offers the loss & theft plan. Also the AppleCare+ for iPhone website only shows me pricing for loss and theft. Are they hiding the standard plan or totally getting rid of it?
It's still there but it's hidden.
Go through the drop down menu screen.
You have to jump through screens and menus to see it.

What are you talking about ?

When you get a 2/3 years ac+ , you can extend it afterwards with yearly sub or monthly sub

That still saves you a good couple of bucks for the 3 years
I misinterpreted what you said. Sorry.

However, that being said, I'd rather have a "subscription" right from the very beginning rather than the possibility of something going wrong and losing coverage (and not being able to get it changed over), because they didn't renew my policy as a subscription after the term was up. Sometimes the more expensive route is the more secure route. "Better safe than sorry" and all that.

Fair enough . You get alerted though , and have like 60 days to renew so not so risky

Honestly tho , for an insurance , having to spend 50$ more is a big to me (yes there is a 50$ difference for just 2 years if you use monthly)

Boiling the frog ... a good point
also, it's 50c/month/subscriber.

Not sure if they release the stats, but with 2 billion devices out there; even if only 5% of users have ac+ that's 100M subscribers.

50c/month is $600M a year extra service revenue for not actually providing anything extra.

Some exec will get a fat bonus for the idea; then suddenly feels motivated to do it again next year, and the year after.

edit: saw its iphone specific; so maybe 1/3 of that. 200m is still a tasty meatball

when you put the operations people in charge, you will absolutely get ruthless, sterile efficiency- this is exactly what Apple has been for the past decade. Kudos to the behemoth Cook has built, but I can’t help but think that we’re now in an era where Apple looks more like the Microsoft of the early 2000s - a company that prioritizes rent seeking over innovation. The fact that they slept through the rise of Gen AI and had to scramble for over a year to try and catch is the first sign of a company too big to be nimble. It’s not a surprise why Jobs had to create the Mac team as a startup within the company to be successful - maybe that needs to come back.

The best commentary on Tim cooks Apple according to Steve jobs. Apple has become IBM. Prescient really.

Fine by me, I have never been gullible enough to buy into Apples rather extortionate insurance policy like many seem to. When insuring my mobile phone is nearly as much as insuring my house or my car which are many many times more valuable, its a no for me.

I suppose you are right in some aspects, but in others like introducing the M1 chips and with the base level Mac mini basically being the best deal in tech I’d argue there are good sides as well.

I’ve purchased it with every Apple device I’ve purchased for me and my children. Not just when devices have broken screens or cracked backs, but also when mechanical issues pop up after the 1 year warranty expires.
Sometimes I’m glad living in the EU. Every Apple device sold will have a two year warranty for manufacturing defects.

iMay have missed it...
What about those already paying monthly for AppleCare+?
Will our price$ increase? 🫠🤥

Without question, the smart money move is to buy a gently preowned iPhone and avoid any extra coverage fees

Get a great deal up front and if something happens, you pay to deal with it if need be

I've been doing this forever now and you end up WAY ahead financially
Exactly. I do this every time. On Swappa, a mint iPhone 14 Plus is like $360. Done. No AppleCare needed.

I have a different perspective on this. First of all, my comments only refer to AppleCare+ coverage for my Mac. I never buy AppleCare+ for my iPhones. I've owned iPhones since the original, buy a new one every 4 years, and have been fortunate to never have any hardware issues or accidents. So, I don't see the value in AppleCare+ for my iPhone. However, I have AppleCare+ on my Macs, and it is a great product, and IMHO has great value. For $179/yr, I get unlimited software support and hardware support for my 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro (16GM, 1TB). It's now in "vintage" status and soon to be moved to "obsolete". Even though the machine is old, Apple will continue to service it FOR AS LONG AS I CONTINUE TO HAVE APPLECARE+ coverage. It does not matter that Apple has obsoleted the product. This includes, amazingly, the battery. If the battery on my Mac dies in another 4 years, Apple will replace the battery for free, even though the machine is 11 years old and the battery is a wear and tear item. If they do not have the parts, they will replace my 2018 Macbook Pro with a currently supported Mac of equivalent or greater specs. So, for example, if I have a hardware failure on my Macbook Pro, Apple would replace it with a current M4 Max 36GB 1TB 16-inch Macbook Pro at no charge. The key is that you have to maintain uninterrupted AppleCare+ coverage, so actually, I LIKE the auto-renewal feature of their service. I have just purchased a new Mac Mini M4 Pro 24GB 1TB as my new everyday desktop. I paid $1,599 from Apple. I purchased three years of AppleCare+ for $99. Essentially, for $35/yr, I get unlimited software support plus unlimited hardware support for as long as I care to have the machine. If it dies after 10 years, Apple will replace it with the then equivalent model, and it would only have cost me $350 for a new $1,600 machine (or whatever it will cost in 10 years.) IMHO this is an amazing value. Does this work for everyone? No. By the end of the useful life, my Mac is running like a tortoise. Am I assuming that software support will end at some point as the machines no longer receive the new annual OS releases? Sure. But overall, I actually LOVE this AppleCare+ product (for the Macs). I was so skeptical about the terms, I called AppleCare+, and they spent about 30 minutes answering questions about the plan and showing me where the unit replacement feature language was in the T's & C's. If you currently have AppleCare+ coverage for your Mac, I'd encourage you to think twice before non-renewing it.

The rule of thumb I go by is to buy AppleCare for mobile devices. So iPhones AirPods MacBooks but not for iMac or HomePods.

I bought a 16 pro max today, when trying to activate Apple Care, only the Loss and Theft option is displayed... I believe it is no longer possible to buy the basic version, even trying through the support link, when accessing it says that there is no eligible device

At the time of the post, both were available as shown.

The article did state...
"Apple is phasing out one-time purchase AppleCare+ plans in retail stores and for on-device purchase as of this week."

$140 a year = less than $12 a month for full coverage and tech support is a good deal for me. It’s not for everyone of course.

I don't mind the subscription model of Apple Care+.
You can cancel when you want, and for those who want more coverage the the usual 3 yrs, they can have that too.
We don't know exactly how the usage will be when we buy our Apple stuff.
With AC+ subscription we can have coverage for a short time or for a longer period.
We decide how long it feel valuable and good for us.
