Unless Apple removes all software from the shelf and put it online, there will be a need for the ODD.

We know that Apple has the best servers in the world that can handle ALL the downloads when they have something new that comes out and the world wants it at the same time! Think back when Lion came out, when a new iOS comes out, what issues have you run into trying to download.

I'm a huge proponent of the optical drive, but I disagree. Its best use IMO is for backing up data to DVD's. A ten cent piece of plastic that holds 5GB.

When the trial of Adobe CS6 came out, they had no issues whatsoever delivering it as a download. Id be surprised if that couldn't happen for just about any software. Also, you install software once when you get the computer and then only very infrequently; if thats the only thing you use it for then it wouldn't be much hassle pulling out your optical drive when you had to install something.

  1. The "MacBook Workstation" should not be a "thin" system. If you want thin, get an MBA or a MacBook Pro. Toss all the ideas about "thin, lightweight, long battery life" out the window when designing a portable workstation. Think CPU, think GPU, think 16-32 GiB of RAM, think 2-4 GiB of VRAM, think TB of disk space, think of the power supply and cooling so that it can run at 100% for long periods without meltdown. Think of the battery as a built-in UPS for minor interruptions - not as a trans-oceanic movie-watching feature.
  2. You really can't mention the "pre-existing unreliability of those machines" without links to well-factored studies that demonstrate that "unreliability". Without links, it's just FUD.

Why? I have a really nice 15MBP that runs all sorts of programs, its highly capable, and very fast. It also can get 9 hours of battery life if I'm doing something simple. I don't make any sacrifices and i think that the system being only as strong as its weakest link is probably the best analogy.

You mean Apple, who never let even their staff know what's going on, would have told a finnish retailer, not specializing in Apple products, about their plans?

do you think the big malls get a call today that says ' open the gates we have 2000 apple products to deliver, get ready to pay

ps: germany too
ps2: apple products are displayed in adverts 11 months out of 12, if they are not displayed it means :
-1- north korean boykot style
-2- something boiling in the pot

by now, the adverts should be full of Ipad3 (for example, and for many weeks-months)

The local Apple (finnish, german, whatever) says to the local supermall that whitin 1 month there will be loads of new products, prepare the cash, prepare the event, prepare the media, deliver, deliver, deliver, open ->
-> the big mall makes his own interest, as apple does its own, then they advertise and do not advertise depending on the common programs.

as for 'us' we dont have to know, otherwise for 1 month, all the old line will stay unsold.
but the big mall is who makes money, we are who put it on the table.

So you mean not only is Apple letting some random retailers that don't really have any connection to Apple know when their products are coming out, before letting their own staff in on it, but you're also saying the lack of adverts for iPads is in some way proof that the release of the MBP is imminent?

I think you've been drinking a bit too much Koskenkorva and Karjala for breakfast.

Oh, okay. So the malls, getting this information, would NOT be interested in selling out their stock of the previous models, or selling any other Apple product for that matter?

Gigantti is an authorized reseller
one chain that makes billions, you talk about them as if Apple is a competitor

they have to work togheter, if Gigantti (or Verkkokauppa, or any other big chains) promote and sell in the same direction, they both win

you (buyer) may not know
a small electronics shop may not know
who spends hundreds of thousend of euros in advertising, and must pay and order in advance, knows

i dont know if what comes out now is an imac or a macbookpro or a macmini5
however they have got to have reasons why no iphone is displayed, no new ipad is displayed not even headphones are displayed

take it easy man, instead of complaining, check your local ads and let me know :)

ps: in the case of FINLAND, it's 2 different and major 'chains' doing the same, one can be a casuality or a choice, 2 who share the most of the same national market it's a suspect + a major German one, is a very suspicious thing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elkjøp

Elkjøp is the largest electrical retailer in the Nordic countries, with over 264 stores across six countries and 6000 employees.[1] It is owned by Dixons Retail.

As of 2008, Elkjøp has several sister stores outside the Nordic countries, including in Poland and Hungary, and the Nordic stores alone sold for £1.6 billion in 2006-2007.[2]

Elkjøp trades under several different brands:

Norway: Elkjøp and Lefdal Lavpris.
Sweden: Elgiganten and PC-City.
Denmark: Elgiganten.
Finland: Gigantti and Markantalo.
Iceland: Elko.
Faroe Islands: Elding.

it's not 'a finnish beer drinker to know about Apple' but a whole Nordic countries business, do you think at Cupertino they dont know who they are ? they might know months in advance and sign billionaire deals (one company for all the branches)

the Swedish paper ads, show only an Iphone 4s, no Airs, no machines

Dixons Retail plc (LSE: DXNS), based in the UK, is one of the largest consumer electronics retailers in Europe.

Gigantti makes billions? The whole chain is barely selling for two billions, and that's in several countries. But considering how you misinterpreted what I wrote, I'm not surprised.

What's the gain for Gigantti or Verkkokauppa in not advertising any Apple products before the launch of a new MBP?

you (buyer) may not know
a small electronics shop may not know
who spends hundreds of thousend of euros in advertising, and must pay and order in advance, knows
How long does it normally take between the launch of an Apple product and the availability in Finland?

i dont know if what comes out now is an imac or a macbookpro or a macmini5
however they have got to have reasons why no iphone is displayed, no new ipad is displayed not even headphones are displayed
What would that reason be? What is the reason behind not wanting to advertise an iPad because there is a new MBP coming out? What's the reason behind not wanting to empty the stock of the old MBP:s before getting the new ones?

ps: in the case of FINLAND, it's 2 different and major 'chains' doing the same, one can be a casuality or a choice, 2 who share the most of the same national market it's a suspect + a major German one, is a very suspicious thing
The only strange thing here is why anyone would believe that any retailer would want to keep their stock of old computers when they know a new one is coming out, or why not advertising the iPad would be proof of a new MBP.

[A finnish retailer] might know months in advance [when Apple's new products are being released]

Yes. Of course they do. I have to go lie down, my stomach hurts from laughing too hard.

because when you put the big of your Advertisement funds you gonna buy 2-3 dedicated pages, and show every product of every different category

rather than put an ipad3 between zillions of HP, Samsung, Sony etc products

impact.
that is why apple opens big apple stores, makes events and key notes
you have to put an apple in your mind, not only see an ipad for sale

Earlier on, you were just being illogical, but now you're actually not making any sense at all.

Still laughing at the whole argument that a finnish retailer would know about Apple's plans several months before the rest of the world. Kippis and kiitos.

Actually you misunderstood my post. I was not referring to resolution at all. I was referring to SIZE. 13" just blows to game on in MY opinion. I am quite satisfied overall with any resolution. I just didn't enjoy how small things were, esp when I am coming down from a 27" iMac.

It'd be difficult to drop down from a 27"...:p

That's why I'm opting for a 17" because then, at least, my 23" monitor's resolution would be identical.

But it's not just some Finnish retailer..It's Dixons

and Media Markt isn't exacly small either, it's europes largest consumer electronic's retailer.

Fine, you wouldn't be a customer for the MacBook Workstation - the MBP is right for you.

There are many here who would like more than what an MBP offers (particularly if the next model is thinner and lighter and less powerful).

Tim needs to either bury the ghost of the Performa and not be afraid to make a range of systems, or he should drop any attempts to cater to creative/technical professionals who need more features.

I know, but do you think any retailer will know what Apple's plans are several months in advance, so that they can plan their printed ads? And do you think it's logical that a retailer would not want to sell the old stock (or any products what so ever from that company) before the release of a new product?

> many months before

Hello ? Mr McFly ? what are all the threads on this forum about ? half an year ?
1-2-3 months
it could be a matter of 20 days (or 45)

a paper Ad may come 1 time x month (maybe?) so perhaps in 45 days your updated Ads come out.

> retailers won't sell their old Macs

i didnt say they dont sell, if you go to any of the shops i talked about, there is all the Apple stuff for sale

i'm talking about the CURRENT paper ads

you explain to me why this is happening, and its NOT NORMAL.
maybe they dont like to advertise Apple anymore :p:apple:

Haha, you're getting more and more hilarious. Still not a single explanation to why any of this would make any sense... And considering the fact that your posts are getting more and more difficult to decode, I'm guessing you're still drinking.

the fact that you dont understand a word or a logic, doesnt mean it has no sense
but i don't wanna spend more time with a blind mule

i just wrote something happening on printed ads in 2-3 countries
like it, dislike it, do what you want

:D beer is coming

Refresh is coming soon because there are no Apple products in this week's printed ads isn't logic, it's the opposite of logic. It's illogical.

Also, if it were true that Apple actually do tell retailers up to several months in advance what's going to be released and when, don't you think there would be significantly more leaks from the retailers and their employees than there are today?

i am not saying finnish paper ads are the sign
it fits into the internet rumours on this forum and all over the net, on youtube
and as partially told by the Apple heads during Ipad3 keynotes for this year

if there was nothing in here and on the net in general
i wouldnt believe that new apple products are coming ONLY BECAUSE finnish shops are printing for Lenovo, Samsung and Toshiba

you exclude the whole contest around it.
(13 and 15 possibly being produced already)

1+1+1+1+1 maybe it happens
1+0+0+0+0 no way
