There are not many companies that can boast one million sales of anything in that short a period, couple that with the economy, the price of the unit and it makes the sales numbers even more remarkable...

It all boils down, on my opinion to the time and effort Apple puts into the design of their products. My grandfather, bless his his soul, was a rather famous retail merchant at one time, who used to love say "good design is good business". This always always worked for him and it certainly works for Mr. Jobs.

Real test? Geesh. Some people are never impressed. :D
The device has only been out a month... in one country.
Next it goes global. Then they drop v2. And then...

iPad has passed (and Apple continues passing) the test.

I'm impressed, but I'm surprised it took the 3G launch to get them over the hump. Seems like sales had slowed until the 3G was launched.

surprised? Ok...

- folks who bought the no 3g ipad: early adopters
- folks who buy the 3g ipad: easy with money, travelers, corporate, folks with money...

it may come to pass that ipad 3g may do better than the no-3g ipad. We'll see in about three months.

But a million is really a lot, a thousand thousand doesn't sound so big... can someone who did better in high school tell me what size cube of iPad boxes a million would be?

Depends on what type of cube you mean. If you simply mean a stack of iPads 100x100x100 (as opposed to more accurately being a physical cube in which every side is the same length), then it'd be about 83.3' x 66.6' x 16.7'. If you mean physical size, then it'd have to be calculated by someone even smarter than me (not that those type of people are all that rare).

I love the iPad. It is sweet. Just need more iPad specific apps AND something needs to be made to help with the glare. Can't read a book outside in the sun.

Alan Kay, the Yoda of tech, got it right years ago when talking to Steve Jobs about the iPhone:

"Make the screen five inches by eight inches, and you'll rule the world."

I think one of the main things it proves is:
1. Desire for new shiny things
2. Increase in disposable income

Sure, I can come up with some uses for an iPad, and it's a nice looking device, and, at least in the US, the pricepoint compared to the average income is very low - so people are talking about outfitting their whole family with one.

But honestly, there is really not much of a case for it being a 'must have' product.

It sells well because it's Apple and it has the huge Appstore behind it. It's not really revolutionary nor magical - it's a fairly obvious concept - there are just few (any?) other companies with the 'cachet' that could bring it to fruition.

In my opinion the iPhone was much more of a revolution, combined with the Appstore as a single point content delivery system.

we have two ipads:

- one for my wife which she does not let me touch...
- my own ipad is now my 3 year old's ipad which he does not let me touch...

I can only play with the iPad at night.

Alos, folks waiting for 'gifts' (i.e. ipads):

- myself
- mom
- dad
- wife's mom
- wife's dad
- niece

We'll be purchasing ipads for the next three years, and then we will have to start updating to the next gen...

Incidentally, only ipad will do, nothing but iphoneOS in whatever they get.

Actually, running the maths on this one would tend to indicate sales were just about consistent.

They sold 300,000 wi-fi models on launch weekend and initial guestimates seem to match that for 3G. That leaves round about 400,000 units to account for which would average 100,000 a week. Considering that they sold 150,000 in the first week of sales that sounds to me like they're pretty close to that figure which for a US launch that's supply limited is really good going.

I honestly think you're going to see a strong performance for the iPad continuing the rest of this year. It'll have another burst when it launches internationally at the end of the month, probably a slight lull over the summer, another burst when OS 4 comes out for it and then it'll get silly over Christmas. Add in the extra bonus that this is a device that'll sell more as people get the chance to go hands on with it for themselves and I wouldn't be too surprised to see iPad maybe, just maybe, hit the 10 Million mark in under a year.

1 million iPads sold in just under a month is really remarkable. Good for Apple. I'm interested to see how the sales continue over the summer.

How to get up to $900 out of people pockets?

Sell them enlarged iPhone that can't make calls!!!

Magical device indeed! :D

Hahahahaha
Just to let you know, for every three iPhones Apple sells, there are two iPod touches sold. The iPod touch is a major driver of app development as iPod touch users tend to download more apps than iPhone users.

It will be interesting to see in six-twelve months how iPad users affect app development and sales.

The most magical thing is Apple's stock, trading right now over $266. ;)

Availability

Would anyone expect for there to be any left by next weekend in San Diego? I've only read that in the biggest major cities there's no more left but when will they restock?

How many of those 1 million iPad's sold are no longer in the US ? Apple pretends they didn't launch globally, but obviously they did. Only difference is that us non-US customers are getting screwed due to the extra costs associated with importing them.

Come one Apple, next time launch globally or don't launch at all.

Virtually every small electronic store has some of these over here, the shopping mall where I bought mine had 2 floors of small electronic stores and every single one of them was selling iPads with accessories, the one I bought my iPad from had more than 50 available and that was way before the 3G got released. It is already possible to get 3G models over there.

Nobody knows. Just keep calling your local stores. They're building them as fast as they can.

You read Steve's comments, yes?

honestly, there is really not much of a case for it being a 'must have' product.

It is the only e-book reader to support three separate bookstores (Amazon, Kobo, and iBookstore), and is by far the most flexible e-book reader. That alone is sufficient for some people to consider it a "must have".

as much as i dislike the ipad, its still good to see that its doing well, and that everyone else likes it who bought one:)

I guess every silver lining has a dark cloud. To some people.

Many people were holding out for 3g. After all, if you want true mobility.

Well I won't be buying one. Because 1: It's a nothing more then a large screen ipod/iphone!! I have no need for another ipod touch.

Its an awkward device. Too big to carry around yet too small and not functional enough to do any serious work on. Not really a replacement for my macbook, ipod or desktop.

What they need to do is come out with a 5" ipod with 3g and a camera. Now THAT'S a device That would be worth buying!

There have been rumors of a smaller form factor iPad between the iPad and the iPhone. That would be cool--something approximately the size of the Kindle screen. I think if Apple had that, there would be one size that would be "just right" for just about anyone, and they've already done the R&D.

I do hate his use of the word 'magical' to describe the iPad.

You're not the only one. Makes me cringe every time I hear it.

But congratulations to Apple for moving a million of these devices. That's quite impressive given the short amount of time that they've been available.

Don't know about San Diego, but even in smaller cities like Greensboro, NC and Durham, NC...

NO 3G'S IN STOCK - sold out in first 1/2 hr.
Only limited wifi's in stock and selling fast.

I called both stores and they said "We are not allowed to hold any for anyone, and it is hit or miss if you come to the store; if we will have any left." They also told me. "You really want an ipad? your better off right now ordering directly from apple or an authorized reseller (if they can get them) and wait the days before it ships."

I was really looking forward to getting a 32gb 3g or a 64gb wifi-only this weekend.
