mic

This would of been exciting news if the iPad had got an mic and audio input socket and bigger RAM.

Hi Art, actually there is a mic already on your iPad. You can use it in Skype for voice calls, and for those music recognition apps, for example.

As far as audio input socket, I'm pretty sure the iPhone buds/mic combo works too.

Maybe not exactly what you need it for (higher fidelity?), but I was pleased to see at least that much, as it's not obvious at first glance that there's a mic anywhere.

Regards...

I actually just bought an iPad yesterday. I don't need another facetime device as I have iPhone 4 and iMac. Only thing that would truly sadden me is if its a Retina display, but for some reason I highly doubt that. Everything else Im satisfied with my 1st Gen iPad.

Either Apple or a third party will provide a camera attachment for Gen 1 iPads. Probably cost around $50.

I wonder if the iPad camera accessory could provide the USB port so a webcam could be added for Facetime. It would be a clunky solution, but hopefully it would work.

I hope to get one next month, setting the money aside. This timing works good if true. I hope Apple makes a VNC client for the ipad that 'uses back to my mac'. I see some that work through the internet, but they all need google servers or a server locally running.

Yeah, I know the iPad has a built-in mic as I use it all the time when sampling using NanoStudio. What I was wanting in a future update is a dedicated mic socket so I could connect a better mic to my iPad. I heard that I could plug in a mic in a Camera Connection Kit but not sure if it is true.

the one in the background of that picture looks very square sided. looks more like an iphone4 in shape than an ipad. will the 2nd gen have a new care design?

It is true. I recommend the Blue YETI mic with a CCK, it works great on the apps that support it! Multitrack DAW does.

I'll be very disappointed if the next generation iPad only has the addition of Facetime and camera - although it was what I feared all along.

iPad is selling so well, they don't have to change stuff. It's like the iPhone 3G all over again, except in the case of the first iPhone, it really was way beyond anything else in technology. The iPad? Revolutionary in its impact and positioning in the computer market, but with specs that were already outdated at introduction.

At least bump the RAM up to 512mb, Apple.

Then again, why should they? The iPad will not have a competetor in a very long time, totally unlike the smartphone market. So it's totally reasonable from a business standpoint that they just keep on pumping out the same thing with these small additions, at least for a while.

Like we didn't see this coming, of course the second generation is going to have a camera. And to all the people who are saying "oh, I"m getting the second generation" you are just jealous, and you're making up for the fact that you don't have an iPad.
Like seriously that was the first reaction of all my friends when they found out I had an iPad, "Oh, well I'm getting the second generation"
and I bet none of them will ever get iPads.

(sorry about this unrelated rant, I just had to get it off my chest.)

Haha my friends and strangers usually squeal and go is that..... and lose there mind for a minute and can't remember it's name, then they remember or I have to finish the sentence...followed by can I touch it! :D

Agree

like this news was never going to happen.

THE DAY THEY RELEASED THE IPAD IT SHOULD HAVE HAD A CAMERA.

+1

I think this demonstrates my point that Apple is "trickling up" technology from their iPhone to other devices (iPhone>iTouch>iPad>Macbook>Mac). Next year I wouldn't be surprised if we also saw retina display on the iPad. If it's going to be marketed as a reading device it could definitely benefit from it. Also though, be prepared for whatever cool features show up in iPhone 5 to not come to the iPad until iPad Gen3 the following year. :/

There are a lot of competitors dying to get an iPad killer on the market...they're just not ready yet. However, Apple proved that it didn't have to pack in the hottest specs to make an impact in the market. With that said, as other products come on the market it'll be up to Apple to continue to innovate to stay in the lead (if not in overall sales numbers at least in innovation and usability).

Retina display would be great on the iPad and would make it far superior to 1st Gen "iPad Killers" that are bound to come on the market.

What?

Thanks, but all those who bought first gen iPads knew exactly what they were getting and were happy to pay for it. And by all accounts the iPad has performed particularly well in what it was intended to do.

Anyone who doesn't buy technology because there is something better coming out months/a year later is a fool; new stuff is ALWAYS on the horizon.

Thanks for 'the lesson' boys. Seriously...

Could not agree more, ignore the bottom feeders trying to stir up drama just to be jerks.

icamera

I'm sure apple will have some type of camera for first gen ipads, why apple would bring out an all new iPad with a camera when they just brought out the first gen ipads, and not at least try to make some money of first gen iPad customers Is beyond me!!

You're absolutely right. But that would decrease the desire by some of the current owner to upgrade to the new and more revolutionary iPad with the camera. Now why would that be in Apple's interest?

There will NEVER be an iPad Killer, reason, No One else has an APP Store;)

Seriously...?

Unless you're new to the world and cycle of Apple, we ALL know this is how it works. I'm reading all of this chatter about "... oh never buy a 1st gen Apple product..." and ..."If this is true I'm going to be REALLY upset!"

Seriously? By now we all know how these cycles work. Around June each year we get a slightly better iPhone. In the fall we get slightly better iPods etc... The only products that aren't on a one year cycle seem to be the computers (and maybe AppleTV).

So we ALL know that a year from now there will be something newer, faster, etc. You can sit on the sidelines and wait and wait and wait, or you can do like I did recently with the iPods. I followed the rumors, watched the release event live, compared specs and bought a new nano this week. Will it be outdated in a year? Probably. But I know that going in, and now I'll have a whole year to enjoy it. I'll probably do the same thing with the iPad when I get to a point where I can afford one. (I'm saving up for an iPhone right now)

I've found that the smartest thing to do (besides saving a little money by buying refurbed) is to save up and make my purchases shortly after they start shipping the latest version of whatever-it-is that I'm interested in. That way if I want to be on the bleeding edge of technology, at least I will be for a year!

But stop with the "I'm going to be pi$$ed" comments. It's like getting upset because you bought a Camaro last month and Chevrolet just released their 2011 models. You KNOW its going to happen eventually!

Gotta love the early adopters and beta testers :D

You're quite welcome,oh fearful one.And while you are waiting for just the "right" one we are enjoying our iPads, which work flawlessly as advertised. You need to look up the definition of beta hardware and software, because neither applies.

1) FaceTime on the next gen iPad. Duh.

2) Apple field testing a camera equipped iPad. Shockers. I didn't know Apple did that. Oh wait, I do recall something about an iPhone 4 getting lost in a bar and then sold to a tech blog.

3) Apple updating the iPad for the holidays -- why? Demand for the current version is still exceptionally high. New products are introduced to reignite demand. If there is waning demand for the iPad, iOS 4 will bump it up for the holidays.

4) Apple is a creature of habit. I think the MR Buyer's Guide is testament to that fact. Apple is fairly predictable when it come to product update time frames.

5) CES is in Jan and Apple likes to upend CES announced products. If they update the iPad for the holidays they can't do it again in Jan when we know a slew of Android tabs will be announced. No, Apple is going to go for the ambush here and announce the iPad 2 after CES ends. It's the ultimate "boom."

I <3 my 1st gen, early adopting, knowing a better one will come next year, still love it anyway, hate on me hater iPad. I have a cyle similar to apples....allow me to explain.

Apple releases product I want, I buy said product, I enjoy said product, apple releases new product, I sell old product, wash-rinse-repeat
