Yes, I think everybody by now agrees that Facetime is coming to the iPad, you don't have to be a genius to figure that out. My point is that the iPad is not a natural device to hold a video conferencing session with, it is simply too large and awkward. Plus you are very limited by WiFi as it will only work in hotspots and your home. Most of Apple's iPad sales are for the WiFi so it's going to be annoying trying to find a wifi connection. Also, you require the other person to have an iPad or an iPhone since Apple is such a closed infrastructure and most likely won't allow other video conferencing apps to use the camera for streaming. It is TERRIBLY limiting.

Yes it is definitely coming but it is a gimmick most could care less about.

I don't care much about facetime, but If I were to use it,it would usually be at home or a hotel, where coincidentally wifi is usually available. In fact,my ipad hasn't left home yet.So I don't think lack of 3G makes it as stupid as you.

Is there going to be a Facetime app for Windows and Linux systems?

I (and I suspect many ohters) need a video call system that works across phones, tablets and laptops of all kinds. I had really hoped that Skype would do this.

Perhaps Google will.
--

In any case, I smell a business opportunity for someone. A decade ago, I knew a software group that was tasked with making all the different video conferencing systems used in their company (100,000 employees) work together.

A few weeks later (!) they announced a working solution and demoed it. We were all stunned. How did they manage to reverse engineer all those various protocols and make them work in such an incredibly short time?

Turns out they didn't. What they cleverly did was simply have a giant software switch that took the decoded _video output_ of one conference type and fed it into the _video input_ of another. Beautiful.

So I can imagine someone creating a giant paid video call center that acts as the translation nexus for all calls. Who knows, perhaps it's been done?

When the first iPhone came out, I waited because I couldn't believe it wasn't 3G.

When the iPad came out with no camera, how did you guys not know that it would be in the second generation one.

There's a difference between having the money to spend on the items, and being taking advantage of as an Apple consumer. I love my apple products, but I won't buy "hot" new items, that I know purposefully omit hardware on their first gen. products. I won't be taken advantage of.

How lucky you are to be smarter than everyone else!
So...did you buy an iPhone 3g?Did you feel taken advantage of when the 3GS came out?Or the iPhone 4?

When I ordered my iPad I fully expected the next model to have a camera, more memory at least, and now think it might also have a gyroscope and retina display(maybe). Was I taken advantage of?Not on your life.I got exactly what I paid for.A camera in an iPad is not worth one dollar to me.If the next model has it,fine,as long as there are other actual upgrades that make it compelling to me.
BTW-Same goes for my 1st gen iPhone.

Excuse me for asking, but how does Skype not already do this ? It is available for close to everything under the sun that matters (iPad, Android, Linux, Windows, Mac). It does video over the Internet and I guess local networks (since I can video call my GF from the upstairs bedroom to the downstairs living room).

It doesn't seem much different than Facetime in a sense. In fact it seems better since it's compatible over a broader range of devices.

.
I almost feel as bad for iPad owners as I do for the beta iPhone4 owners. At least the iPad owners aren't stuck in a dead end contract.

You should have known something was up when that big iPad was less powerful than a PHONE. Duh people! I guess some peoples like to buy billionaire Steve new Mercedes. Just mail him the check directly next time.

Save your pity.I have both and absolutely love them, and zero problems with the phone.

Looks like I will be trying to sell my 1st Gen iPad sooner than I thought.

Just the same with iPhones I am sure I will get every Gen Model that comes out just to stay up-to-date.

I don't think iPads will have the same resell value that an iPhone does. I don't think I've paid a single dollar for an iPhone since the 1st Gen one with how much they resell on eBay.

Although as much as my kids love the iPad maybe it can be just passed down to them. It's amazing how quickly young kids (3 & 5 years old) pick up on how to use these devices and play the games and work through the Apps.

Is it a mental defect of yours that you can't seem to grasp the concept of reading comprehension? I merely pointed out that since most people go for the WiFi model it's safe to assume most people will require either to be in their home or in a hotel compared to the iPhone which has internet access almost everywhere. But this is a small thing compared to my MAIN argument regarding the form factor. The iPad simply isn't designed to be used as a phone, period so a camera is merely a marketing ploy. Yes, there will be people that will use it but that's the same with all products.

My point is that people here are freaking out over not buying an iPad or some that did are freaking out that they BOUGHT one and think they should have waited and I am just trying to make them see the light and not fall prey to Apple's marketing.

As soon as a new update to a device is announced with MINOR tweaks suddenly people think it's worth paying full price again just so they can have the latest features......THAT'S stupid. Essentially they will be paying $500 again to simply have a camera.......This was my whole point, which you completely missed.

Well...uh...so I can use it at home, maybe? I'm not quite sure how that's useless. I'm not going to use Facetime out in public, anyway. Do you think the iPod Touch's wifi is ultimately completely useless because you can only connect to the internet at home? Same goes for my MacBook, too. I should just get rid of all this completely useless stuff!

Hotels too!Travelling is the main time I'd use facetime.I'd wager the most of the time iPads are used they are in range of wifi.

Wow.
People are SO mad that their precious iPad is going to be replaced by something better, that they're resorting to these insults.
It's pathetic, really

I've read this whole thread and missed those posts. All I see is people who don't have iPads telling those who do they are morons. Please quote one.

I actually DO feel sorry for people that feel compelled to write posts in which their sole reason for being is to bring others down to lift up themselves. Now that is a truly sad existence :(

I've noted that I see iPads in almost the all the locations that notebook computers are used: coffee shops, trains, airport terminals, airplanes, libraries, etc. albeit in much less quantity right now.

Most of the time, they are in range of Wifi (not always free though).

I see quite a few iPads in corporate settings these days.

Sometimes that's true perhaps, but not so with the iPad. To anyone who chuckled at Steve's "magical and revolutionary" description, let me ask you this: As you walked around this summer (parks, cafes & pubs, etc.), did folks turn their heads to gawk at your laptop? Did they slowly wander in your direction to get a closer look? I didn't think so. You wouldn't believe how many folks i wowed with this "1st gen" device. By the time i finished demoing Star Walk and SoundHound, they were literally drooling: "i'm definitely getting one of those!"

Besides, i didn't want any camera in my iPad. [as i type this message on my MBP now, i have the camera covered... just in case.] So i guess when i do upgrade my iPad (3rd gen perhaps), i'll probably *have* to get one with a camera. Oh well, so it goes. Meanwhile, i really had a great time with it all summer (and still do now, even just farting around in the living room).

Bottom line: best early-adoption experience ever.
There's an app for that!

A "Retina" display isn't the answer. The problem is a more basic one: resolution. And the reason that problem exists is because Apple opted for 4:3 over 16:9.

Apple needs to up to a scalable resolution that is sufficient to reproduce at least 720p HD video, a necessity if they're throwing in all the camera functions from the iPhone 4. That means they'll need a minimum 1280x960 resolution screen, which is an odd resolution. My guess is it might be very difficult to find someone who wants to mass produce that kind of screen at 9.7" but presumably they can convince someone to build one specifically for the iPad.

I would hate a 16:9 iPad.

i think this means iPad mini announcement

not the iPad refresh itself.

iPad as it is selling well; they need to add camera and facetime which they can gladly do with iPad mini (6"/7") and get ready the iPad refresh in next march 2011.

remember iPod touch did not get 512MB RAM so not all the latest technology is NOT given for new iPad yet.

as a current iPad owner i want to see a year refresh pattern not every 6 months refreshes

my wife was pregnant that time and my son was 2 months now; iPad served well for last 6 to 8 months - $599 happy customer; do not mind reselling or upgrading later ;)

iPads are pretty cool. I'd like one, but I just can't justify spending the money on one. And yes, if I could spend the cash now, I'd rather wait to buy a second gen, even if I could afford one. But I'm sure not going to criticize those of you who did buy a first gen iPad. Heck, if you bought one and enjoyed it, good for you! Seems to work as advertised, so you knew what you were getting into! I don't see a problem with that.

It's not like any of you bought one, brought it home and said, "What? It doesn't have a camera?" And nobody who bought one was dumb enough to think that Apple wasn't going to launch one with new improved features. It did what you wanted, so you bought it. No reason to insult your intelligence for that! :)

As the very happy owner of an iPad 34Gb 3G I thank you and compliment you on your good sense and reasonableness!
Enjoy your 2nd gen,I may join you if it's a big upgrade!

Why is it?

I bought the iPad knowing there would be a new model/revision out in 12 months or so. That's the nature of buying electronics - hell a lot of companies have much quicker product revisions...

When the new iPad comes out, my current one won't suddenly stop doing what I bought it for...
I'm assuming the iPad will be a top selling Christmas gift this year. Anyone cracking open a new iPad at the turn of the year might be a bit annoyed when Jobs gets on stage a month later to announce the brand new model.

This is why iPods come out in September and iPhones in June instead of January and February. This is, in my opinion, the only reason that Apple might want to release a revised iPad in October. They surely want to push the annual iPad update into the second half of the year at some point, especially given how anxious the diehard Apple fans get about purchasing a new Apple product when they fear a revision is only a month or two away.

First Gen iPad was indeed a test run, apple was just testing their waters out, then iPad craze took over, it started selling like hot cakes even without a camera.

I guess with FaceTime and AirPlay, apple echo system is looking better and better in future.

Edit: IF nobody bought 1st Gen apple products, there won't be second gen product. Eg: Cube

I'm pretty sure the Mac Mini was the successor to the Cube?

If true I actually view this as a flaw on Apples part. The right move is/was to lead the market with a product that last 12 months. If this is a 'response product' then I worry about Apples Product Development people and mediocre products in the future. Right now I buy the top of the line Apple products but moving forward I'll change my buying habits. Why buy the best when you can wait and get it cheaper in a few months. Piss Poor on Apple's part.
I don't understand what you're ranting about. Apple is leading the market. Their products are in high demand. It is perfectly natural for a product to be improved over time.

like this news was never going to happen.

THE DAY THEY RELEASED THE IPAD IT SHOULD HAVE HAD A CAMERA.

Yeah, and multitasking and facetime and hdr and consolidated mailbox and retinate display and 10x the battery life and hd video and a free upgrade for the next model and a lifetime free subscription to playboy for ipad, uncensored

Did I forget something?

I got a solution for you: wait till it comes out with everything you want and don't buy it a second sooner. I promise, you will never ever in your life be disappointed anymore that the thing you bought does not have all the features you want. You might also find yourself not buying anything anymore but he, whatever makes you more happy.

And to all netbook owners and Apple haters: peace! You don't know what you are missing but who cares. It's your choice. Live with it and move on.

Personally, this is why the iPad didn't appeal to me. It was too plain and basic, especially without a camera. It's actually turning into a true and social device now!

Next step for Apple: Fix the notifications system!

I vote for "Retina Display" as "The most over-abused buzzphrase that means nothing".

Seriously guys, at least define what you mean when you say Retina Display for iPad. Because it probably doesn't mean what guys think it means.

It gets its name due to the claim that the screen's pixel density is greater than what the naked eye can see. So I wouldn't say the name means nothing. I think most people the use the term use it to refer to a screen with that characteristic.
