I vote for "Retina Display" as "The most over-abused buzzphrase that means nothing".

Seriously guys, at least define what you mean when you say Retina Display for iPad. Because it probably doesn't mean what guys think it means.
I just think sex everytime I hear it. Help me out, what does it really mean? You seem to know.

I will chalk this one up under "duh", I kind of figured that Apple would update iChat with it, I would guess they will wait until the new OS X. What I would like to see is iChat actually support MSN, Facebook, and Twitter though that would be very nice.

I'm not sure how Windows would even have it other than if they just made an app called Facetime, but since Apple made Facetime "open" I would imagine it would be easy to integrate with other all-in-one chat clients.

Nobody uses FaceTime. It's one of those ideas that seems cool, but isn't. I won't miss it. I like my iPad as is.

Face camera would be nice... but my big concern is how fast arm processor are getting... I want to buy an I pad and hold it for 4 years. If apple release a dual core a9 with 1.2ghz and 512MB on the 2nd generation Ipad, I will buy 2.

Nobody uses FaceTime? Sorry, but just because you never use it, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't, either.

Just wait when FaceTime is linked into iChat, everyone will be using it.

I love my iPad as much as anyone. It was an awesome first gen product that will at least last me through next april- because that's the earliest we'll get a second gen iPad IMO.

One thing I do agree with the ipad haters is that we should of received a front facing camera. Cheap camera phones and every notebook has them. I'm not asking for USB and SD slots, but would it really have cut into Apple's profits for a stupid little front facing camera on the top of the iPad?

To me, that's Drop Feeding the consumer. But being that there's no other tablet out in the market, I guess apple can get away with it.

When we say Q1 2011, are we talking Q1 of a calendar year, Jan - March or Q1 of Apple's 2011 financial year? Nov-Dec?

Who's this everyone you're referring to ? I don't think I've ever used iChat, and it's not Facetime that's going to change that.
Well, have you even used Skype? If not, I'm going to assume that you've never tried video chatting with someone.

I think the first generation ipad will not see much in the way of buyer's remorse. Worst case scenario is that someone purchases a new one a year later for new features. The old one is a quality picture frame if not used for anything else. Yet I think it would still see use for watching movies.

I'm guessing early adopters who want face time would consider a new ipod touch instead of replacing the current ipad. The buyer then has two devices to choose from depending on the current needs.

You will. You're just being stubborn.

Well, have you even used Skype? If not, I'm going to assume that you've never tried video chatting with someone.

You're talking to a guy that was video chatting back when Netmeeting was about the only thing that remotely worked for video chatting. This was circa 1999.

My first webcam was a Creative Video Blaster Webcam II, USB. Worked fine on Windows 98, was a pain later on to get going under Linux.

These days I do use Skype indeed.

You will. You're just being stubborn.

I won't. Video chatting is fun the first 2 minutes. Then it gets to the point you don't even look at the video feed. Then you realise it's futile and just use audio.

Been there, done that, never saw much use in it.

And I'm pretty sure the guy said everyone was going to use it when it gets into iChat. Again, I was simply pointing out that his scope of "everyone" was rather large, since : 1- Not everyone uses iChat. 2- iChat is not available to everyone, unless your definition of everyone is limited.

iChat is a fantastic program and if you've never used it that's a bit of a shame. The screen sharing features are to die for. I can't begin to explain how many times I've used it to help friends with computer problems or to collaborate with colleagues on projects.

What data are you basing that statement on? I'm going to assume you have no data and are just forming that statement out of rarefied air. But please prove me wrong w/ some scientifically obtained data from a large pool of respondents, say 1,000.

iChat isn't the only application that does that. At work, I use Sun's online Shared Shell to collaborate with colleagues. At home, I don't need to share my screen with anyone really.

So I don't see what about iChat makes it so fantastic, and again, CONTEXT, I don't see everyone using iChat. Not even close.

Both posters, the one claiming nobody uses Facetime, and the one claiming everyone will use it once its in iChat, are completely blind and irrational. Some people use Facetime, some will use it in iChat if it comes to iChat.

That's the problem with extremists, they don't seem able to understand the world isn't Black and White.

I have money in hand ready to go. Let me see the rest of the specs.

iChat works differently on Macs though, as I'm guessing you know. Skype picked up the screen sharing after iChat if I remember correctly. But most all consumer screen sharing apps are only for viewing the other persons screen. iChat allows me to take over the other persons computer and help them out with something. I do this a lot with my family.

I have to agree.

Just look how everyone had been using Video phones on their land lines for years now.

Exactly almost no-one does.

Only place you tend to see it being used is in Sci-Fi movies.

Hair in a mess, eating some food, wandering away from the mic, picking some food out your teeth, yawning, looking away at the TV during the conversation etc etc ;)

Yes it's nice so granny can look at grand kids waving in another state and the porn chat-line industry is going to have a field day with it, but I can't see the novelty lasting for many.

Or put it another way, I only know 1 person who ever used their webcam for chatting for a while, and that ended up in a drawer eventually.

If there really was a desperate need for video phones we'd of been using them years and years ago.

Sure, boyfriend/girlfriend chatting "do you love me, blow me a kiss, look at my new hairstyle" stuff I can see being popular for a while.

You analyze my words way too deeply.

I don't think it's necessary to point out that when I meant 'everyone will use FaceTime', I didn't mean 'everyone', if that makes sense to you.

Look, I appreciate your enthusiam about iChat. You can like the application and it can do what you need it to do. That's ok. But Netmeeting allowed that back in the days way before OS X even existed. Sun's Shared Shell is as its name implies, Shared, in that both users can share the session and interact.

This is not some new fangled thing Apple invented in iChat. It's not even different.

It's disingenuous to claim otherwise and try to push iChat as the be-all end-all solution.

I didn't mean 'everyone', if that makes sense to you.

Then why use the word "Everyone" ? No, it doesn't make sense to me. If you didn't mean everyone, you wouldn't have used that word. Next time try to go with less emotionality in your post, and go with rationality. It'll prevent people misunderstanding your meaning.

Okay, let me fix my previous statement, just for you.

Just wait when FaceTime is linked into iChat, a greater amount of iOS users will be using it.

Better? ;)

There's no need for SD or USB connection, this isn't a wired device, it's a wireless one - focussed on portability. There are adapters for those who see this as a must have, but i gather sales of the camera connection kit have been tiny and sales of iPad have been huge - so what does that tell you?

The iPad itself may be wireless, but other devices people want to connect to it aren't. It might be all well and good in 20 years when all cameras and camcorders are wireless, and wireless is literally EVERYWHERE, but right now a product like the iPad NEEDS a USB and SD interface. £200 netbooks have them, which instantly make them the device to take on holiday with you when you want to transfer photos / videos, and are the only two connections most people on the street are familiar with.

I work in a busy airport retail environment and I can tell you we are selling the USB / SD kit as fast as they are coming in. Maybe stocks are good in US, but they seem to be quite slow in coming in (certainly into our very large UK company) and is the number one asked for accessory for the iPad, moreso than the popular Apple case.

So having a Facetime camera is all well and good, I think FT may well take off in a big way some years down the line, but not right now. Its a gimmicky feature for the vast majority of people given its limitations of use right now.

As well as advancements in memory, built in USB and SDXC slots are the killer features that would sell the iPad finally to me. Until then im sitting on my wallet.

It would be nice to have facetime on that big screen, though I don't know if I want to hold it for a long period of time in my hands the same way I'd hold the iPhone during a facetime session..

Right! You're supposed to rest it in your lap like Jobs demonstrated. That way the booger-cam captures you at your best. :D

  • Faster processor
  • More RAM
  • Faster GPU
  • Increased pixel density (when economically possible)

If all Apple does is hit those three points with each refresh, third party developers will do the rest. :)
