a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

as they haven't had enough real world testing and are too expensive with things missing that are later added by Apple (such as 3G to the iphone, sd card slot to macbooks/imacs, ios 4 to ipad, a working antenna to the iphone 4, blu -ray(?) and now a camera to the ipad).

Wait until 2nd Generation and look in amusement at the cool kids/wanna-be celebs lay down their rent money for the Apple product of the month.

iPhone 4 isn't first generation. Neither are Macbooks and iMacs, with or without SD card slots.

Like I tried to tell my buddies, you don't want to be first but second or third when it comes to apple. It's the reason why I didn't jump on the ipad wagon I could use the camera & face time for work which would save me from carrying my Macbook pro around. Hoping it's soon:D

I also bought my iPad on day one. When the new new one comes out I will buy it and give the 1G to my daughter. Problem solved, happy kid. Although she usually has it anyway

This is incorrect, the part you are thinking of was determined to be the spot for the proximity sensor, not a camera.
Why would you need a proximity sensor on the iPad? It's after all not a phone that's brought up to your ear, because that's when the proximity sensor steps in.

There is no doubt that FaceTime is coming though, but I will be curious to see how the implement it. They certainly aren't going to just slap a camera on the front in some random spot, it something that takes a lot of consideration.
I'd say it will be on top of it, in portrait mode, just like on the iPhone and new iPod touch. Which happens to be the void found in the iPad housing. Coincidence? I don't think so. In fact; they are probably already field testing the next iPad. Just like they did with the iPhone 4.

You are correct, I misspoke. I meant ambient light sensor. Sorry, my brain kept thinking proximity because of the iPhone 4 issues, but you are right, it's an ambient light sensor sorry. It is definitely not a camera!

The problem is that the fact that the iPad is so big, so when the camera is turned on its side, the positioning is WAY further off than it is on an iPhone/iPod. It is going to take a lot more than just slapping a camera on it, it will take smart software to make it work. They might even consider putting two cameras, one at the location you are saying, and one along to side for when you use it in horizontal mode.

Is anyone not familiar with photography and the concept of perspective? Unless it's a fisheye camera, it's going to shift oddly when you flip it on it's side (if the camera is on the location where the ambient light sensor is right now).

When you build over a million units you can have many custom parts made. I still don't buy that hole was just a prox sensor.

Now look at the following picture.

Doesn't the one in the middle [on this picture] look suspiciously like a front-facing-camera to you? To me it does, and that makes it another brilliant engineering part. A combination of at least two, possibly three different features. All cramped together one one tiny little board.

This might as well be the problem Apple was facing, and decided to not include a front facing camera on the first revision. But hey... what do I know ;)

I misspoke, I meant ambient light sensor. Anyway, if you want proof, here you go:

iFixIt Guide "Installing iPad Wi-Fi Front Glass Panel" -- Check out Step 9 where they remove the "Ambient Light Sensor." The pictures clearly show the part that people thought was the hole for the camera, and is actually the hole for the ambient light sensor.

Here is the image that was leaked out before the iPad came out that people thought was for the camera (Update: turns out this is actually an image of the bezel from a MacBook Pro, check out the link below):

Btw I think the "leaked" image that people thought was a camera, actually was a camera, but it was from a MacBook Pro and not the iPad. It was a mislabeled image, it was never from an iPad. Check out the picture of it here from the MacBook Pro guide.

You are right. And that got me confused. So if Apple decides to include a front facing camera, then they obviously have some engineering tweaking to do.

Nice! This is why I don't buy the first version of a new Apple product. They always make their products much nicer the first revision.

Umm.... ok .....

I knew full well this would probably happen in a future rev. when I bought my iPad 3G. Fact is though, I'm too much of a technology user to pass on a device this important in the "grand scheme" of computing for that long.

I've already had numerous people ask me iPad-related questions that I wouldn't have been able to answer nearly as well for them if I didn't buy one early-on and get familiar with it. I work in corporate I.T. for a living and have my own side business doing on-site work for home users and small offices. I didn't think I could afford NOT to get ahold of one of these and start using it!

That "Never buy first gen. products!" advice may be fine for the casual user, but for many of us, getting a head-start on the whole LEARNING process of what a new device can/can't do has a lot of value. I've been burnt a few times because I bought Apple's "revision A" products (had one of the very first Macbook Pros and the darn thing arrived completely D.O.A. after a LONG wait to get it!). But that won't stop me from being a "first revision" buyer again, in the future, whenever the product warrants it.

...and this folks, is why I did not buy an iPad. Never buy 1st gen products.

Best Xmas Pressie?!

Time to Face the truth:
The 1st gen iPads should of had Face Time.

It takes a big man to admit they made a mistake and Stevie is just such a man! I can see these selling like hotcakes, especially if they get it out before the holiday season.

To early adopters- cummon, you knew it would get improved sooner or later and I'm sure iPad 3 will be just as mouthwatering when it arrives. I'm pretty sure in terms of the overall functionality the change won't be all that drastic, either.

Bump! Most annoying feature of the iPad. It's maddening if the way you surf the web is to open multiple pages from the site you're on, only to try and read them later and have to watch every one reload.

If true, that's a bummer. The resolution on the iPad was noticeably low when I owned one. (Not distractingly so, but you could tell.) After having the iPhone 4 it'd be very tough to go back to that. I look at my wife's 3GS and the low resolution really stands out.

It doesn't need to be quite that high to get the same effect, seeing as you don't tend to hold it as closely as a phone. Even 1080p full-HD will look amazing and non-pixellated.

If true I actually view this as a flaw on Apples part. The right move is/was to lead the market with a product that last 12 months. If this is a 'response product' then I worry about Apples Product Development people and mediocre products in the future. Right now I buy the top of the line Apple products but moving forward I'll change my buying habits. Why buy the best when you can wait and get it cheaper in a few months. Piss Poor on Apple's part.

You must have missed the teardown of the iPad that showed PRECISELY where and how the camera would be attached onto the interior of the housing shell. The camera was almost certainly dropped from the product to bring the price under $500 for the base model.

Whatever

I still don't see the use case for an iPad to begin with.

If I want something to play music and use a few apps I'll stick with my Touch. At least I can put it in my pocket when I'm not using it.

If I need to get real work done or play any real games, the iPad isn't going to cut it anyway.

The only people I see buying these things are the fanboys that have to have everything Apple comes out with no matter what it is.

I still say you could cover dog crap in white plastic, stick an Apple logo on it, and they'd line up around the block to buy it.

And a year later they'd line up again when they add a camera to the dog crap.

this would be pretty cool... i think i'm gonna buy an ipod touch with the facetime camera... i wish apple would make a CDMA iphone already so I could use it on sprint though. AT&T sucks. Well so does sprint, but not as much.

or people who can see a use case for it. I was skeptical of the iPad at first but it may actually fit my needs perfectly.

whats the lesson?? your point doesnt make sense.

because if you wait and buy the 2nd gen ipad....the 3rd generation ipad will be better and the 4th generation will be cooler and the 5th gen....

No, you were the one who missed the part in the teardown where it was so clearly not a camera, and was actually the ambient light sensor. Read the post I made a few posts up, the one with the pictures showing exactly that this is the case and you are wrong.
