a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

as they haven't had enough real world testing and are too expensive with things missing that are later added by Apple (such as 3G to the iphone, sd card slot to macbooks/imacs, ios 4 to ipad, a working antenna to the iphone 4, blu -ray(?) and now a camera to the ipad).

Wait until 2nd Generation and look in amusement at the cool kids/wanna-be celebs lay down their rent money for the Apple product of the month.

This post makes no sense. I bought an iPad day one. I love it and use it every day. If I followed your advice and waited for 2nd gen I would be without something so incredibly useful in my life for an entire year!

I can simply sell my iPad if I really want 2nd gen. Who cares?

iOS 4 is coming out for the iPad a good 5 months before the next gen comes out. That is lots of time! There is nothing missing from my iPad other than that. I see nothing about it that is "beta" or anything like that.

Please stop these pointless posts.

I think I’ll hold off for a true second-gen, but a mini-update to add that one feature would make sense if they think they can crank it out sooner.

NostrilTime!!!

This is the true second-gen that they are talking about. This is not a mini-update. Did anyone actually read the post? It says 1st quarter next year. Guess when the 1st gen came out? 1st quarter this year. Jeez I swear people just read headlines and assume "OMG ITS COMING OUT TOMORROW."

True—and anybody who waits for the second-gen faces a whole new curse: the second gen! And seventeenth-gen buyers are stuck being the early adopters when everyone gets the eighteenth gen :) It’s almost as though things keep improving and getting cheaper over time... The frustration of being too much into tech products (like me).

Exactly! If you play the waiting game you will never get to enjoy a product because you'll never be buying one. You will just be waiting for the next one, and the next one, etc.

If this is true, I will finally bite the bullet and buy an iPad. I've been holding out, and this is one of the reasons why. Lack of facetime is a dealbreaker for me

See, this is a good reason to wait. You have something you wanted that isn't in the 1st gen, so you wait until they make one that does.

A bad reason to wait is "OMG 1st gen sucks wait until the 2nd gen."

I wanted what the iPad offers, so I bought one. I don't care about FaceTime.

This would make sense however my source at Apple is planning to buy an iPad because there supposedly is no camera coming out nor any upgrades besides a smaller sized iPad.

It came out April, which is the beginning of the second quarter. But that might have been a slight delay on the initial rollout and Apple wants to lock in on a March, June, September cadence for iPad, iPhone, and iPod.

There wouldn't be a second generation if nobody bites the first. You have to thank the cool kids/wanna-be celebs as you call them for adopting early..

I think it may come out before Christmas, during the recent iPod keynote SJ mentioned HDR photos as being one of the iOS 4.2 features coming to the iPad in November.

And not feasible right now because an App would have to render at some insane resolution that would chew up memory and multitasking would be thrown right out the window.

I hope not. After seeing the iPhone 4 display I think the iPad should have that now.

Like we didn't see this coming, of course the second generation is going to have a camera. And to all the people who are saying "oh, I"m getting the second generation" you are just jealous, and you're making up for the fact that you don't have an iPad.
Like seriously that was the first reaction of all my friends when they found out I had an iPad, "Oh, well I'm getting the second generation"
and I bet none of them will ever get iPads.

(sorry about this unrelated rant, I just had to get it off my chest.)

Why? This is 5-6 months away still. Sounds like you are going to be without an iPad for half a year. You probably could have kept it for another 4+ months and still got a lot of money for it.

The article says:

And although Apple's historical product cycles would beg to differ, that person familiar with the company's plans claims that as of last month, there was an ambitious push inside Apple to verify the refresh for a possible launch ahead of this year's holiday shopping season.

That would be November, which coincides with the release of 4.2 for the iPad. What if 4.2 and the new iPad were released at the same event, just like the iPod touch and 4.1? Would be pretty sweet.

Sigh, not this again. He was going over the bullet point features of 4.1, not announcing HDR photos on an iPad.

Why would the iPad even have a rear facing camera? Do people even think about this stuff or do they just read specs without drawing an image in their head about what it would look like or how it would function.

It is very unlikely.

Thats a ridiculous, baiting statement. I got an iPad on Day 1 and love it and am very glad I did. If I had waited for Gen 2, I'd be missing out on all the enjoyment im currently getting from it. If you can afford first gen products and enjoy using them, who cares.

I will break it down for you all:

Facetime on the iPhone is a very cool and useful feature. Facetime on the iPod touch is the result of people without an iPhone wanting the same sort of functionality but ultimately completely useless because you cannot take it out of your house so what's the point.

Facetime on the iPad is stupidity at its best. The only people that will be able to use Facetime realistically will be the ones that purchase a 3G model. Otherwise, think about it.....when would you possibly use the iPad for video conferencing? This is why we all have laptops that stand up on their own etc. The iPhone is the only device that is the perfect size and fits the profile for a video conferencing device.

For those of you that already purchased the iPad, don't let the morons tell you that you're early adopters / beta testers, just enjoy your purchase and move on to more important things in life.

For those of you that are now biting their nails contemplating whether to purchase on right now or not I say if you need it buy it, if not and you can wait a couple months then do that.

I am sick and tired of the immature imbeciles bashing people for getting things before something is announced / rumored. This is the nature of technology, nobody can keep up with its pace so and people don't have time to wait for some stupid tweaks on the next revision because it is simply not worth it. If you need something, you buy it when you need it, end of story. Good night and shut the **** up already!

I don't think Retina Display is coming to the iPad for at least a few years. They need to change the processor in order for the system to handle such a definition. The camera is already a big enough of an upgrade, specially if they change the RAM to 512Mb.

No way will Apple launch new iPads before Q1 2011. They are not going to alienate their most loyal customers who will rush out to buy a new one 12 months after the initial launch, but almost certainly will not buy again this year.

I think the most likely event will be that Apple will release different sizes for the iPad, I highly doubt anything more will be done before 2011.

If true I actually view this as a flaw on Apples part. The right move is/was to lead the market with a product that last 12 months. If this is a 'response product' then I worry about Apples Product Development people and mediocre products in the future. Right now I buy the top of the line Apple products but moving forward I'll change my buying habits. Why buy the best when you can wait and get it cheaper in a few months. Piss Poor on Apple's part.
