It seems impossible for Apple to release this before Christmas without angering a whole lot of people because they'll never meet demand. And they'd probably depress sales of the existing iPad, unless they just offered this as a premium/upgrade model.

Of course, releasing a new model in early 2011 is going to annoy a lot of new iPad owners too, so maybe it's six of one, half a dozen of the other.

To all the geniuses that say not to buy 1st gen product; there wouldn't be a 2nd gen product if no one buys the 1st gen product. I bought 1st gen and I'll buy the 2nd gen when it comes out as long as there isn't something better in the market. I bought cheapest one knowing there will be a better one next year just like the iPhone. I would rather "waste" few hundred dollars rather than wait a year for better one, which will be replaced with even better one a year later. You never win.

The REAL iPad v1

...just like many of you have already pointed out, this is what it should have been from day 1.

I love the ipad concept, and can't wait to buy one, but not until it has a camera and can print. Then it will be the perfect toilet companion. Think how productive one could be!

Seriously though, Apple will sell the current iPad during the holidays, and after everyone has v1, they will release the new one and people will be pissed off, swear Apple up and down, and buy v2 a few months later.

History repeats itself once again. Money in Apple's pocket.

Don't waste your breath man....Some people are too thick to understand how the world works.....or perhaps too ignorant. I believe in buying something when it is needed regardless of what is being speculated. If I require a laptop for my work or perhaps I'm a writer then I am going to look at my budget, my requirements for this laptop and then get the one that does what I need. If you don't need but rather WANT something and you can afford to buy it then nobody has the right to judge you or tell you how to spend your money, end of story.

I can't see a true (double dpi) Retina display being economically feasible next year, and going up in resolution by a fractional amount would probably cause more problems than it solves, due to uneven scaling making pixel-perfect art look blurry with interference patterns.

What I wonder, though, is if the iPad gains printing, video chat, and streaming to the stereo or TV (via APX or AppleTV), might it be suitable to be the primary computer for many people? All they would need to add is the ability to do the initial setup and update the system software on its own. (Although the ability to back up to a TimeCapsule or USB drive would be pretty nice to have). I have friends who have given iPads to older relatives who either have no PC or some ancient and misconfigured PC that can't run a modern version of iTunes, so they just set up the iPad on their own computer and hand it over, causing it to be "stuck in time" with regards to software updates. And as iOS and MobileSafari become more dominant, having regular updates to patch security holes will become increasingly important.

Facetime on the iPad is stupidity at its best. The only people that will be able to use Facetime realistically will be the ones that purchase a 3G model. Otherwise, think about it.....when would you possibly use the iPad for video conferencing? This is why we all have laptops that stand up on their own etc. The iPhone is the only device that is the perfect size and fits the profile for a video conferencing device.

You might think it's stupid, but Apple doesn't think so. Evidence abounds that Apple is thinking / was going to put a camera in the iPad.

Unlike a Laptop, An iPod Touch / future iPad will accept a FaceTime call when it's asleep. So when I call home via FaceTime, I don't have to worry if someone is using it at the time, like on a laptop. That feature alone will make FaceTime more useful than iChat video conferencing, to me. It will be as easy as placing a regular phone call, rather than something I have to arrange beforehand. The iPad is also a lot easier to carry around and show things going on than with an awkward laptop (especially if there is a rear camera, though I doubt that will happen).

Sorry, FaceTime on an iPad is far from useless. And it's coming.

I think this is almost a certainty with all of the new places that FaceTime is moving to. I would be more surprised if the iPad didn't get FaceTime.

Will the iPad get 512MB of Ram or will it get a gigabyte, that's the real question.

I'm not going to try to convince myself I don't want the second gen iPad, cause I will fail. But even if I got it I would have no one to face time. I don't know anyone who has an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4 so...

Some people might be mad when newly updated products come out, but honestly if you are a true Apple fan and have been for a long enough time you know damn well the next gen will always b e better than the last.

Thats why you always have a backup plan to sell your old one, etc. Personally nothing about the next gen interests me yet.

Sigh, not this again. He was going over the bullet point features of 4.1, not announcing HDR photos on an iPad.

Why would the iPad even have a rear facing camera? Do people even think about this stuff or do they just read specs without drawing an image in their head about what it would look like or how it would function.

Facetime utilizes both front and back facing cameras so if it is getting Facetime why wouldn't it have a rear facing camera?

And to quote SJ @ 15:30

"iOS4.2 is going to come a little bit later this year and it is all about iPad. It's bringing everything to iPad. iOS 4.1 with its multitasking, its folders, game center, HDR photos, everything you saw here, all of it to iPad."

Yes, I think everybody by now agrees that Facetime is coming to the iPad, you don't have to be a genius to figure that out. My point is that the iPad is not a natural device to hold a video conferencing session with, it is simply too large and awkward. Plus you are very limited by WiFi as it will only work in hotspots and your home. Most of Apple's iPad sales are for the WiFi so it's going to be annoying trying to find a wifi connection. Also, you require the other person to have an iPad or an iPhone since Apple is such a closed infrastructure and most likely won't allow other video conferencing apps to use the camera for streaming. It is TERRIBLY limiting.

Yes it is definitely coming but it is a gimmick most could care less about.

its true for next year, but not this year

apple in no way will promote a new ipad model before the holiday season. expect the next gen to be announced in jan/feb to be released in march/april to have retina display, front and back camera, IPS and all the other goodies the iphone has plus some other good stuff i'm sure that will be new to the product for the first time. it's easy to assume apple "could" do something and it's easy to see what apple is going to do when 2 products of theirs (iphone and touch) do the exact same thing with the exception of the touch on a few options. i don't need an insider to tell me that, but oh well.

...and this folks, is why I did not buy an iPad. Never buy 1st gen products.

Time to Face the truth:
The 1st gen iPads should of had Face Time.

a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

What?

Thanks, but all those who bought first gen iPads knew exactly what they were getting and were happy to pay for it. And by all accounts the iPad has performed particularly well in what it was intended to do.

Anyone who doesn't buy technology because there is something better coming out months/a year later is a fool; new stuff is ALWAYS on the horizon.

Thanks for 'the lesson' boys. Seriously...

I think Overlord was trying to say that because of the larger form factor, it would be too awkward to carry around an iPad showing your caller things. I could definitely see Apple choosing to leave it out for that reason.

Like we didn't see this coming, of course the second generation is going to have a camera. And to all the people who are saying "oh, I"m getting the second generation" you are just jealous, and you're making up for the fact that you don't have an iPad.
Like seriously that was the first reaction of all my friends when they found out I had an iPad, "Oh, well I'm getting the second generation"
and I bet none of them will ever get iPads.

(sorry about this unrelated rant, I just had to get it off my chest.)

******** nerd.

1st quarter of next year sounds about right for the next gen iPad, so I will go ahead and say this rumor is true. It is extremely unlikely that we will see it before next year though.

Not sure I agree... I think Apple could be shooting for October. Kill the competition over the holidays. This with the new iPod line-up would be the killer Christmas for Apple.

Wish I would have kept my $92 per-share Apple stock.

That would cost at least $1500. The new Retina Touch doesn't even have IPS. No retina display, back camera maybe.

Unlikely probably, but the earliest would be November, with the release of 4.2. Apple wouldn't release a new iPad with the 3.x OS.

The lack of a camera was the primary reason I didn't jump for an iPad when they came out initially.

If they'd have had a camera from the get-go I'm sure they never would have caught up with demand. "Very wise, them Jobians."

That was my thought as well. I am hoping that a FaceTime equipped iPad will be available with more than 64 GB of memory and an increased screen resolution...in a smaller form factor - maybe 7"?

If they can fit 64 GB into the iPod Touch...then they should be able to get more than 64 GB into the iPad.

I can hope and dream.

Just a side thought... Apple people who know what's going on must really get a kick out of watching the blogs like this and seeing everyone's speculations.

I feel like this news was just a safe assumption. I'll be more interested when Apple is in the advanced testing stages of facetime mice, keyboards, and airport base stations.

Original iPad buyers suckers now?

Hardly.

All of us "cool kids" who bought our iPads on day one are enjoying one of the most phenomenal pieces of tech to come out in years, while the cheap-o whiners pine away, bitter and iPad-less, waiting for the fabled iPad2 (that they probably won't buy, either).

But let me do you guys a favor, anyway. You can buy my minty clean first gen iPad when the new one comes out. It's a 32gb WiFi, and I'll sell it to you for around $450 next March which will be a good price from the $650 including tax I originally paid for it. That way, you'll be able to finally get one, and I'll have enjoyed it for nearly a whole year before I upgrade for the other, non-Facetime related hardware improvements iPad2 will have to offer, why not.

Total cost of ownership for me? About 60 cents a day.

That's not too bad for something I use for 5-8 hours each and every day of the week. Keep buying your $5 lattes, or even $2 Dunkin' Donuts coffee everyday, though-- it's obviously a much better value to you...

And FYI, Facetime is OK but mainly it's a novelty and mostly a hassle compared to a regular phone call. If you had an iPhone 4 you'd already know that like those of us who do! I can't understand why people keep insisting that Apple really cares about FT because they are "pushing it" in their commercials, etc.-- it's a gimmick and they don't make any money from anyone actually using it!

That is all. :)

I'm glad you fellas are promoting the fact that no one should buy a first gen apple product because every new product that apple has come out with since the iPad is useless.
