Apple, the new kings of nickel and diming. I bet the antenna thing on the iPhone was on purpose just to get people to re-buy the updated antenna version coming out after Sept 30.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::apple::mad::mad:

I bought the iPad day one, I knew the new one would come out a year later. What is wrong with buying 1st gen products? If you really want the second gen then all you have to do is sell it before it comes out. Apple products have high resale value so it isn't a big deal.

Besides, personally I don't care about FaceTime on my iPad. Though 512mb of ram would be nice I guess. I probably won't bother to upgrade unless there is something bigger than what is rumored so far (and no I don't believe there will be a Retina Display).

What kind of person buys any Apple product without knowing a new one out a year later? That would be really dumb.

Seriously is there ANY PERSON on these forums who is actually surprised by this news?

These forums are filled with bitter lonely people. It's a wonder that anything gets praise around here.

Congrats to you for buying on day one.

cheers

Just a side thought... Apple people who know what's going on must really get a kick out of watching the blogs like this and seeing everyone's speculations.

I HIGHLY doubt that Apple gives a rats ass about what is put forth in these forums. Apple leads and DOESN'T follow................

cheers

When the first iPhone came out, I waited because I couldn't believe it wasn't 3G.

When the iPad came out with no camera, how did you guys not know that it would be in the second generation one.

There's a difference between having the money to spend on the items, and being taking advantage of as an Apple consumer. I love my apple products, but I won't buy "hot" new items, that I know purposefully omit hardware on their first gen. products. I won't be taken advantage of.

so sad

.
I almost feel as bad for iPad owners as I do for the beta iPhone4 owners. At least the iPad owners aren't stuck in a dead end contract.

You should have known something was up when that big iPad was less powerful than a PHONE. Duh people! I guess some peoples like to buy billionaire Steve new Mercedes. Just mail him the check directly next time.

I forgot about the retina display, that is a much better feature than facetime. Since I received my iPhone 4 I don't want to read another LCD screen until it has similar or better resolution.

I think that will be my tipping point for the iPad. Hopefully 2nd but probably 3rd gen tech.

Also, you require the other person to have an iPad or an iPhone since Apple is such a closed infrastructure and most likely won't allow other video conferencing apps to use the camera for streaming. It is TERRIBLY limiting.

Why would they not allow other video conferencing apps? There are already such apps for the iPhone. Developers have access to both cameras. And Apple has said that FaceTime will be released as an open standard, so in the future you may not have to have an Apple device, and apps such as Skype can support it.

My point is that the iPad is not a natural device to hold a video conferencing session with, it is simply too large and awkward.

Obviously a touch/iPhone is the ideal form factor. But with a case that props the iPad up, I think it's a lot better than a laptop. Easier to move around and show things, esp. if they include a rear camera too.

Yeah I know Steve Jobs mentioned that FaceTime will be standardized but let's look at the facts:
He said FaceTime will work on 3G by the end of this year providing the networks cooperate. Also, by the time FaceTime becomes a well supported standard that works across all platforms the iPad will be in its 3rd generation. I just don't see this happening anytime in the near future.

The reason the iPhone or any other cell phone works so well is because of the form factor. The iPad is large and fairly heavy, can you see yourself lifting that thing up to take a picture? It looks ridiculous and feels as such. I will agree it is cool to have your parents see the grandchildren on the nice large screen but I don't think it has much functionality, due to the sheer form factor. Seriously, just pull out your iPhone or iPod touch and do the same thing without pulling a muscle.

I'll believe it when I see it. Just don't see the need. They are over three million out in front of competitors that don't even exist yet.

Love the people here YELLING that they were clever waiting till 2nd gen, and i'm an idiot! ?

What do they not understand about the fact that I have been using my iPad every day and i'm loving it? I'm using it right now. It's great !!!!! But people feel the need to tell me I'm stupid?

If your waiting for the next gen then great, you'll have a better iPad than me. Good, but i'll still love mine for all the reasons I love it now.

Not the rantings of a complete fanboy, just the truth.

It would be a great feature for the iPad. Definitely does not come as a surprise that Apple would consider putting this into a next generation iPad.

Wouldn't it be great if iPad gen2 came out for the Christmas season? This would crush all the other iPad wannabes dead in their tracks. If I were Steve Jobs, that is what I would do. Crush the competition before they can even capture a small percentage of the market.

Then again I'm not Steve Jobs. If I were, the iPhone would be on more carriers. Which I think is coming soon.

Or....

a lesson to you all , NEVER BUY 1ST GENERATION APPLE PRODUCTS

as they haven't had enough real world testing and are too expensive with things missing that are later added by Apple (such as 3G to the iphone, sd card slot to macbooks/imacs, ios 4 to ipad, a working antenna to the iphone 4, blu -ray(?) and now a camera to the ipad).

Wait until 2nd Generation and look in amusement at the cool kids/wanna-be celebs lay down their rent money for the Apple product of the month.

OR... just get a real high paying job and buy every generation of a product that comes out, because they're always gonna improve... And when the new ones come out, give the old ones to a family member or charity.

I bought a Jasmine 20 Meg (not gig) hard drive for $1,800 20 years ago. I bought a 2 terrabyte drive for $400 last year. I guess I should've never bought the Jasmine and just waited.... geeez people, if you need/want it, buy it. Technology is always gonna get better and cheaper.

Hahahahaha! I'll take on any of the cool kid/wanna-be-celeb haters in a cage match in my trailer park any day of the week!!!

...and this folks, is why I did not buy an iPad. Never buy 1st gen products.

Why?

Mine came day 1. If they replace it by Christmas, that's still about 8 months of use from this unit. That works out to basically be $0.50 a day. I easily had that much fun / work out of the unit each day, so I'm ahead of the game.

Yeah, but don't forget about the rumored smaller iPad. That very well may factor into all of this too.

I still have that very same Jasmine 20...still works with my Mac Plus :). I suppose thats a lot of mileage out of the original investment!

A FaceTime camera is the only thing I can see Apple adding to the iPad realistically. The generation after that will probably add a USB port and an SD slot. All of these things are purposefully withheld in the first gen to garner further sales in years on, and so they can gouge us $35 for a freaking adapter.

Anyways, a camera would not bolster me to upgrade. The built-in expansion might. Damn this expensive piece of plastic dongle. Certainly some third-party manufacturer must make a cheaper adapter?

+2

The only things the iPad needs are more memory and retina display. I can't even look at my iPad anymore, it makes my eyes bleed.

Cameras... even though I think it's a good idea, I don't have a use for it myself, especially now that I have an iPhone 4. I can't think of anything else I need or want other than retina and more RAM. And yes, I understand it is hard/expensive right now. I'm not in any hurry.

Not getting the second gen because the third gen will be better. But then what happens to all of those third gen owners when the fourth gen comes out? Point no shame in being an early adopter.

I'm waiting for the (hopeful) release of the smaller iPad. If it has the camera, I'll probably use it once or twice; but it's not a significant factor for me. I've had laptop cameras for years (starting with the external Firewire iSight), and I bet I can count the total number of times I've used one on one hand...

Doubt we'll see a retina display anytime soon.

I will break it down for you all:

Facetime on the iPhone is a very cool and useful feature. Facetime on the iPod touch is the result of people without an iPhone wanting the same sort of functionality but ultimately completely useless because you cannot take it out of your house so what's the point.

Well...uh...so I can use it at home, maybe? I'm not quite sure how that's useless. I'm not going to use Facetime out in public, anyway. Do you think the iPod Touch's wifi is ultimately completely useless because you can only connect to the internet at home? Same goes for my MacBook, too. I should just get rid of all this completely useless stuff!
