I have Black and simply love mine. No scratches to complain about, no LTE issues, no WIFI issues. The phone runs pretty good actually. And for the person who mentioned the S3 done great on drop tests, you might want to take a look at the video Android Authority done. It failed miserably. Another thing, Foxconn manufactured the phones, all of them came from the Foxconn plant in China and before someone says "no mine came from Nashville!" or "Mine can from Illinois!", that may be true, but it was shipped from Foxconn by UPS or FedEx from China to Nashville or Illinois.

Part of me is looking forward to seeing Molly Wood doing her torture tests on the iPhone 5. Of course I'll only be peeking through my fingers when I watch it. I'll always remember when she tortured the Nexus 7 recently and the glass shattered.

I am very impressed with the build quality and the hardware.

I have the 32GB Verizon model in white and Apple has the right balance between solid construction with great materials + the light weight factor.

It amazes me how they can do this while Samsung is stuck using bendy plastics to make their phones light (Galaxy S3).

Totally agree, pictures don't do it justice.

Poll shows the majority flawless.

Not only that, but the sample of people who come here to post around launch time is massively skewed towards those who want to gripe about something. As many others have pointed out, you're more likely to come hang out on the forums if you're pissed about something than if everything's peachy. So even those poll results are majorly slanted towards the negatives...

It's actually a pretty serious issue. If a two year old could do this in just minutes... Imagine what your phone would look like after two years of use.

There is nothing great about aluminum. iPhone 5 is light not because of the aluminum but because it has half the components SGSII has: half RAM, half baseband chips (1 vs 2), half the battery size, no wireless charging, no NFC chip, no memory card/port. It's a cheapest way to make phone lighter.

Ignorant post.

My black 32 was nicked right out the box. Gleaming right at me. Before this in was using an ip4 black, no case. Thing is mint after 2+ years.

After seeing the nick on my ip5, and then feeling the anodized aluminum-- this s hit is going to get seriously fuct. I'm seriously debating returning this.

Sigh...Steve would never have stood for this crap.

Are you in denial? This thread is enormous and its only the first day of sales LOL

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1445493/

No, he just knows math. ~8 million sold. A bit over 2000 posts in that thread. .03% is a very small number. You may say not everyone with issues has posted in that thread, which may be true, but not every one of those posts is presenting an issue either. It's isolated, even if you don't want to believe it.

For those, isolated cases, where the case has flaws, the simple solution is to take it back and get a new one. I'm assuming Apple will do what they are good at doing - making people happy with their purchase. Don't just come here to complain, go get the problem resolved.

As far as long-term care of the phone, it's going to see some kind of damage, no doubt, just like everything in life sees. Put a case on it, like so many people do anyway, or a wrap once they start hitting the market and you'll reduce the likelihood of seeing at least some damages occur.

Yet Apple appears to be having terrible QC problems. Everything from brand new iPhones with scuffs and dents to yellow screens to LTE and Wifi issues. Samsung had none of these with a huge SIII release. That plastic also holds up much better than the iPhone in drop tests too.

Drop test. Second one is the kicker on the Samsung. Not so good. You should do a little research before putting your foot into your mouth

So you're saying that only people with mac rumours accounts suffer this issue? Seems like your math is off as you should be no way stating 8 million. Try the number of macrumors users who have an iPhone 5 then redo your numbers.

I know someone that got one yesterday and had scuffs right out of the box. She doesn't use macrumors either....

It's not isolated until its proven. Fact is there shouldn't be even 1 defect with the price you are paying for this thing.

if you see the poll there are 268 people who have out of the box scuff issues.

paying 600 pounds here

apple wake up man.

I'm not saying that the scuffs are not an issue but I was thinking about this. They sold 2 million phones in less than 24 hours and lets say 500 are messed up... thats still rather impressive.

Black 16 came mint here

If you read what I actually posted you'd have seen I mentioned that fact. So take that .025% and multiply that by how much? It's still isolated.

Actually the number is far less than .025% since accounted for all the posts, which is about 10x more than the polling figures. It's even more isolated than I thought

Usually only the people who have problems post a thread. Not the people who don't. Plus, I doubt 2 million people who preordered all have MR accounts and/or voted in the poll or posted in the thread regardless of scuffgate on their iPhone 5.

50.88% of the votes. Apple must be proud.

500 people out of 2 or 3 million. We all know the complainers post - the happy people are using their new toy. Yeah, I'm guessing Apple is pretty proud.

Thank you for putting it in perspective.

But how many Samsung fanboys or other Apple haters have MacRumors accounts?

Several got accounts yesterday, just to troll.

The plastic cracks...
Plastic cracks. Metal dents. Glass shatters.

There is no "perfect" material so if you have to slam other products in order to "prove" superiority of the product you chose then there is clearly a problem that you are trying to mask. (its usually less about the product and more about the user)

Personally, Ive never used a phone for more than 2years so I dont buy into the idea that plastic is a bad thing. Especially considering that plastic allows for better signals since it doesnt obstruct the antennas. And considering most smartphone users use cases then the material used is mostly irrelevant.

Looks pretty isolated to me. I saw maybe 40 people claim to have this issue. Only 6-8 posted pictures...
So you make blanket statements about plastic phones cracking but when it comes to acknowledging the issues with coated aluminum then you dismiss it as an overblown internet complaint?

I got a few dings out of the box on my new iPhone 5 but Im not going to bother exchanging it because in a month then there will be 10x. Apple tends to make style a priority so this was expected and I dont plan on keeping ANY phone long enough that I should obsess over scratches.

You're obviously in denial if you think only 500 of these units came scratched out of the box.

I'm leaning more on tens of thousands. (Many people probably wont notice, or care)

I will not stand for any blemish or problem with a brand new product, out of box, after dropping $1000 on it.

Apple's replacing mine, so that's all I care about.
