You're obviously in denial if you think only 500 of these units came scratched out of the box.

I'm leaning more on tens of thousands. (Many people probably wont notice, or care)

I will not stand for any blemish or problem with a brand new product, out of box, after dropping $1000 on it.

Apple's replacing mine, so that's all I care about.

which is exactly my point.....the scratches arent isolated to only forum users. It is likely that there are thousands of more units suffering the same thing, if not tens of thousands as you say.

268 out of 7 million. ;)
You're (severely) math challenged, it is probably more like three quarters of a million out of 4 million. (seven million have not been delivered and opened). Looks like around 20% of the users here of black iphones with scuffs. That comes to HIGH hundreds of thousands. People are reporting that they are opening series of them up in apple stores trying to get an unscratched one.

Reminds me of having to one and run tests on four macbook airs before getting one without the cheap 25% slower flash memory hard drive chip apple stuck in after sending faster memory to reviewers. You could not tell from the box or serial numbers you had to open in store.

And comparing iphone 5 build quality negatively to samsung is strange.

----------

Poll shows the majority flawless.
they also indicate a probable close to one million out of four million with scratch problems

I'll be the odd guy out and say I was worried after seeing all the posts about the black model iPhone. But mine was flawless out of the box and 24 hours later it's still flaweless. I do put mine in a case, not a box but a case to carry it. When I use it and it's out of the case it's naked and I've yet to see any flaws.

So yes Apple did do a good job, however just like in past times with yellow screens and signal issues the phone is going to have flaws. But overall I'm happy and too this day I've yet to get a phone Apple or otherwise that doesn't end up with some scuffs. It's going to happen it's a phone it goes every where I go.

Yet Apple appears to be having terrible QC problems. Everything from brand new iPhones with scuffs and dents to yellow screens to LTE and Wifi issues. Samsung had none of these with a huge SIII release. That plastic also holds up much better than the iPhone in drop tests too.

Don't feed the Sept 2012 registrars with this user name. :)

(We own too much AAPL to start thinking for ourselves). Apple Rules :apple:
:p

I figured I would pop in my thoughts here too since everyone is going nuts about this.

First, my black iPhone 5 32GB was immaculate out of the box. There are absolutely no scuffs or scratches on this thing yet and I've had it naked for the day I've been using it (still waiting on my case from Speck)

When it comes to the anodized aluminum, I have to say that I'm incredibly impressed. I baby my iPhone. Between a case and taking good care of the phone, I can't see this stuff getting damaged extensively in the next two years that I plan to use it. Yes, there will be a few scratches and scuffs down the road. I know this because this is aluminum!

By far, this is the best built iPhone yet and I'm saying that based upon the experience of being an iPhone customer since the 3G.

I personally felt that the iPhone 4/4S was the best looking phone of all time, until about 10:30 am yesterday when I received my i5. It is gorgeous and NO I don't have scratches out of the box, and now that I get more time to play with it today. I get the whole "jewel" comment Schiller made. The carved out edges shine like the side of a jewel lol

I am very impressed with the build quality and the hardware.

I have the 32GB Verizon model in white and Apple has the right balance between solid construction with great materials + the light weight factor.

It amazes me how they can do this while Samsung is stuck using bendy plastics to make their phones light (Galaxy S3).

Sad, so sad.

Failing to celebrate the iPhone 5 without bashing the S3 to fulfill the need to have your ego pumped by a cheap shot.

Thanks for making Apple enthusiasts look like jerks

It's just appalling to me how Apple allowed the black iPhones to be so botched. Not only are they getting scuffs after opening, they have marks on them before they're even removed from the box! Did Apple not inspect any of these? Did they not test the anodizing? I preordered a black iPhone 5 because I've always wanted a black aluminum Apple product, but it looks like I'll need to wait until they can actually do it right. I'll more than likely end up buying a white iPhone 5.

The quality control that you want costs more than just exchanging units for those that are unhappy. This is simply a reality of a device that had this many units produced in this amount of time. It sucks for those that got a damaged one but it is going to happen with every new release.

what drop test? cause the drop test I saw, the iPhone held up better. the Samsung eventually cracked its screen with the second drop and the third drop, it came apart...the iPhone managed to hold up well with just dings, dents on the sides but no screen damage. I would like to see the test that you are speaking of.

Grow up. Having used both phones, I can express my opinion that the S3 is absolute *****.

It's this kind of gullible tolerance than Apple counts on.

It saves them from acting responsibly. They know a good majority don't care as long as they don't get a bad one.

Responsible companies perform quality control checks before packaging. They would not ship damaged products.

Apples brainwashed their minions to make excuses for them.

It's great to be Apple :)

I have bought scores of new phones in myth life, probably over 60 (I have had 3,4 and 5 lines many many years.
I have never once seen handsets come new in box with this kind of physical defects in the cases. never.

And a bare minimum of quality control absent int his prodcution costs less, not more. there will probably be tens of thousands of returns, not to mention loss of reputation in a very competitive business on which Apple has touted build quality as part of its branding differentiation.

How many phones have you purchased that were milled aluminum?

My dad accidentally threw his iPhone 5 all the way across the room from 6 feet height. No scratch, dent, scuffs or whatever. Battery life is 10 times better than anything we've used so far. Including my Nexus.

Yeah but the software sucks and the Galaxy S3 won't get me lost. lol

Never ceases to amaze me how the phone being "pretty" is the most important thing for some people.

Def. the best build quality out there. That being said, my primary device is still going to be the S3.
