All AI is hot garbage and the available evidence suggests that over-reliance on AI leads to diminished cognitive performance. No thank you.

The human brain is a marvelous object that AI can’t even come close to replicating. On a scale from 1 to 100, with 1 being a house cat’s brain and 100 a human’s, AI is maybe a 2. Maybe.

We are the product of millions of years of natural refinement. AI is just fancy autocomplete that is incapable of original thought.

Everyone's reaction is completely blown out of proportion, LOL -- this is the end of the company? Like come on, so many of these takes are not serious. Especially when people have been ragging on Siri for years and rag on AI now. You either care about this or you don't, so why are you upset and thinking it can never be done just because they need more time? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with some of these dramatic outlandish and absurd reactions.
Your personal experience and opinion. You can’t speak for all.

My personal experience and opinion is worse. Maybe I’ve set the bar high because you expect a premium experience from a premium brand. As far I can see and compare Siri is a disaster and as good as braindead. Also the Apple implementation of AI is either for kids or on a helpful base hopeless.

Keep in mind that Siri is the only AI assistant that isn’t either sucking up every piece of your data or illegally based on copyrighted internet data. So they’re trying to compete with both hands tied behind their backs. Also, the capabilities/vaporware they were promising represented something no one else can do right now either. Lastly, the late stage capitalism environment we’re in has enabled vast money to be dumped into vaporware promises elsewhere for a long time (prime example being self driving cars, but it’s everywhere in the AI space). This type of mistake was almost inevitable, the big question is how will they address it (not great so far) and will they repeat it.

It’s hilarious how some folks worship AI and tech in general. Our brains are orders of magnitude more complex than all the GPUs and models in the world combined. So it’s capable of spitting out an average of information it’s been trained on. Cool story. Thanks for the bland paragraphs that lack human complexity.

I think you’ll find that all AI is brain dead, by definition. LLMs should be researched for sure, but none are close to being a viable product capable of the promises these companies make. It’s 99 percent hype.

Tim isn’t a visionary, so how would have Apple developed a strong revenue stream when they were on the verge of bankruptcy?
Apple has never been more profitable since Cook took over. Your assumptions and rationale are faulty. I agree that Cook isn't a visionary, his strengths have been in guiding Apple through difficult economic times while growing the company to what is has become today.

Your rationale would make more sense if Jobs had passed away a year ago, not more than a decade and a half ago.

I don’t care how it’s named AI or LLM. The only thing I care about is having a stable system with capabilities that’s at least on par with the rest. So far everything Apple has been releasing with iOS X is unstable, for kids, or not working. There are great examples of competing brands.

You expect more from a premium priced brand.

He will. AI will be the doom of Apple. They won’t be able to recover from this, this is the iPhone moment the competitors experienced in 2007. I give them 3 years for people to realize it. Every phone will be coming with their groundbreaking AI except for Apple
Your “groundbreaking” AI… lolololol.

My phone works just fine, thank you. Maybe don’t attempt to speak for everyone?

That’s your opinion. I’ve seen very helpful and timesaving examples that are mindblowing. You won’t find them if you never look outside apples walled garden.

The fact that they’ve Siri for over 15 years! and the fact that it’s almost in the same bad shape as before is telling.

A good working assistant is a key element of a modern OS. Google has it, Microsoft has it, Amazon has it. The most expensive company Apple has nothing.

Steve Jobs wouldn't be having a senior director reassuring people who failed to deliver on time. That's the problem with Apple now... Reassuring mediocrity... Tim Cook has to go.

You are making an awful lot of assumptions based solely off leaked reports. How do you know that Cook didn't personally address the team on Monday with a more critical and focused tone and that Walker didn't re-energize the team on Wednesday with a more personal and communicative tone. This happens all the time in business. We have no idea what has been said inside Apple. Project leaders often communicate with their team much differently than Senior VP and CEO's do.

Companies that sink billions into AI are starting to realize the emperor has no clothes, and they are panicking. LLMs are inherently incapable of the promises they make. LLMs, by their very nature, are probabilistic. They’ll never perform with the certainty levels that humans expect.

That’s a great spin you make. I speak for myself and myself alone. Weren’t you the one talking for others? And now blaming me?

Is this the new normal?

“Outside of Apple’s walled garden.”

Sure.

So, just to be clear, when my company develops an AI tool for internal use that runs on iOS and macOS, that my Apple device is somehow not good enough???? Your argument makes zero sense.

Also, the ONLY metric that counts is consumer confidence and loyalty to the brand. Most consumers are wary of AI and don’t care if “AI agents” (or whatever garbage is the new flavor of the week) aren’t natively Apple. So what?

Apple sales are fine. Apple brand loyalty is fine. Until it tanks, your assertions are meaningless.

I never once spoke for others. I spoke about how terrible LLMs are at their core functions.

How do you know. Are you wiser than all the tech companies combined. Are you telling that all the billions they’re investing into LLM’s and AI are wasted?

Or are you Tim Cook who missed the train?

No, LLMs are PROBABILISTIC. They will NEVER perform at the levels the human brain is capable of. Sorry.

He won’t.

Apple is not an AI company in the same way they are not a cellular service provider.

And let’s make sure we have a good definition of groundbreaking as it’s not anything that exists today.

I just got an iPad Air M3 and I also have an older iMac so I like Apple products and have used them for years, but I also have a Galaxy S24 Ultra phone. I can tell you Google is so far ahead with Google Assistant and Gemini AI it’s not even funny. I have watched Google Assistant get better and better over time and now with the integration of Gemini it’s going to be an absolute powerhouse of an assistant while people are still struggling to set a timer with Siri. To be honest, Siri was better with simple tasks a few years back than it is today.

Really makes no difference if they’re “profitable”. Inflation and rising prices are what have given them more money. Not to mention cutting corners here and there to make it look like they are doing great. Apple is in dire straits, let’s be honest here. Sales are down across the board pretty much. Even worse than that, Apple is losing trust from its consumers. How long can Timmy keep up the profits when customers are ditching Apple for better, cheaper alternatives? Eventually something will have to give. You can’t keep up profits when you’re losing customers consistently. Maybe if they focused on making great products and great software, the sales and retention, along with new consumers, would grow those profits safely. Gaining back trust from consumers you’ve lost is incredibly difficult, if not near impossible.

The problem is more than the software team. The hardware (iPhone) side has also been stagnating for years, so they have to rely on software to sell the year’s new shiny.

Don’t get me wrong, same thing but slightly faster (takes slightly better photos counts in the same category) is not going to drive many sales
Apple hardware still sets new trends and does things competitors can’t do on a regular basis. The M4 Max chip is leagues ahead of the competition in so many ways. M4 is the most processing power in a tablet. A18 is the fastest phone SoC. You can run a 200 billion parameter model on your laptop, unplugged. The C1 modem and future iterations will play the same efficiency game as the M series chips on the modem side, which will benefit watches, phones, tablets, and laptops. The Vision Pro, while struggling overall in the market due to weight and price, is doing things in terms of latency and fidelity that competitors still can’t come close to.

I think the only major hardware disappointment is abandoning the car project just because they couldn’t get self driving to work. Now Apple has to make sure CarPlay stays relevant, which will become more and more difficult over time. They should just buy Aptera and Telo (they could probably get them for a billion or less), push those vehicles into production asap in a new factory under the Beats brand, and do a significant investment in Lucid with a deal to incorporate next gen CarPlay.

Avoid hyperbole to make a more credible argument. Setting timers, alarms, opening apps, HomeKit device control, getting directions, weather, sports scores, and inquiring about/interacting with mail, calendar, notes, reminders, and messages are all very easy and solid with Siri. Siri also has the clearest voice.
