I must say I'm fairly happy with the new battery: <-- Candidate for understatement of the year?

Not to mention the 200 dollars they're going to be losing on each PS3 they sell....

What's that compared to the $600 each buyer looses ;-)

Btw., just found out that I qualify, too (I'm dead sure that I tried it some time ago and I didn't qualify, then.. strange). Hope they don't send me a refurbished battery...

EDIT: I wish that Apple had a list of serial numbers of stolen notebooks.. after my first 12" powerbook was stolen I wanted to report the serial number to Apple, but they said they don't care. It would be so nice to know that the new owner would at least have some problems getting a new battery..

Boy, am I grateful that I finally had the time to sit down and catch up on my MR. I never pay attention to the news, so I may never have known that my PB was within the model range. I have been noticing that lately, when charging the PB, the fans would kick on for no reason. I was about to order a new power supply but I guess I'll try this first.

I just had a chance to go through my Macs' battery and its back up batteries.

Thanks god I did this today.

My back up battery for iBook is under recall.
My 12" PB's OEM battery and its back up battery are both on reacll

So far, my 15" PB's OEM and back up battery (replacement battery) are not under recall.

My replacement (back up) battery was not opened until today. Just to take a peak at the serial number, I had to open up the package.

Does Apple send the refurbished battery under this recall program? I hope they don't (and they should not). 2 of 3 batteries I am eligible for this program are the brand new (just opened) replacement battery. I just opened the packages to check on the serial number.

Same here, just got mine. That was freakin' fast, less than 2 weeks!

I saw today that Panasonic's parent company, Matsushita, has recalled 6000 batteries. It was about the battery casing, not metal fragments.

Bettery Arrived!

My new battery arrived today! I filled out the online form August 25th, so it only took 1.5 weeks to get to me!

Just got mine yesterday. Did anyone else notice the instructions tell you to put the exploding battery in your laptop and run it dry? But, on the web site Apple said to pull the battery out and plug the laptop into the wall. Is Apple asking for trouble with those instructions?

No, the reason Apple has you remove the battery is the fire danger is from charging the battery, not using it (I think.)

I am assuming the discharge is because when they recycle the batteries they need to be discharged to recycle them and this saves them from discharging 1.8 million batteries!?!?

Do they send you any kind of shipping notification or does it just turn up?

It says not to leave your computer unnattended when discharging the battery, and I think the risk anyway is tiny.

Mine just turned up (via UPS).

That makes sense. Mine gets hotter when charging and using it then when I'm just using it.

Oh yeah, and being the unix geek I am I did a

while [1] ; do sum */*/*.mp3 ; done

in the terminal in my itunes music folder. drained the 2 year old battery in a matter of minutes.

OK thanks. I hope it arrives in the next 3 weeks then as I've given them my work address!!

My PowerBook battery was recalled but my sister's 12" iBook battery says it doesn't qualify. The first part of the serial number is in the right range but then I think it has to end in a certain 4 characters but it was one character out  Has anyone else had this? There was a tick against her computer serial number as being eligible but a cross against the actual battery serial number, when I entered them on the support site.

I'm sure it will, as it's been a week or two already and it's only supposed to take 4-6 weeks. If some have started coming in, I'm sure yours will be here next week at the latest.

Just received our second battery. The one for my girlfriend's iBook.

I ordered that the same day as my battery, which arrived last Friday, and she got her confirmation mail 10 hours after I got my mail.

10 hours later order just became 1 week later delivery...

On the other hand: She got it in 2 week, and even if that was double that of mine, it's still much, much faster than the 4-6 Apple suggest in the confirmation, mail... ;)

Just put my replacement battery in my PowerBook...

...but after letting it charge all night, I woke up to find that it hadn't even taken a charge! Nada, nothing, zippo. What's weird is I couldn't even start up my computer with the power adapter with that new battery in it. So, I removed the battery, and tried to start up with just the power adapter, and that doesn't work either.

I finally stuck in my old battery, plugged in the power cord, and started it up. Unfortunately, for some weird reason, the old one now seems to only last about an hour and a half, when, only yesterday (before all this mess), it was still getting about four hours. I don't know. Anybody have any ideas on how to get this new battery to start charging? Shouldn't I be able to start my PowerBook with no battery in it, using only the power adapter?

I will tell you that when I first got the new battery, it had a tad of juice in it when I first put it in to try it. But, after starting up (with the power cord plugged in), the icon showed that it wasn't charging and that I was just running on the adapter. I even checked in the System Profiler and it showed that the battery was installed but not charging.

Thanks for any help you can give me on this one.

Sincerely,

just received battery

I just received my new battery today from DHL. Only took a few weeks to receive it since I did the recall form on the Apple website the second day of the recall.

Holy crap. I have one of those batteries. Might have to send a circular out to all the mac geeks at work.

Sounds like a faulty battery.....get onto Apple for a replacement......mine had a tad of charge in the new one and it is charging away fine.....so i would say your new battery is faulty.......

It's now working!

Thanks for commenting on this. For some reason, it's just started charging and now holds a great charge. I reset the Power Manager again, and it just started working. I actually don't think I held the button down long enough for it reset the first time I did it. Who knows? Thanks again...

Funny story...

I had heard about the battery recall, but I just didnt want to shut down my computer and check. 2 seconds ago, I finally power down and check. Turns out my battery is one of those eligible

Just ordered my replacement

OK, so my replacement battery arrived

Ok, this might be a sensitive question, but have you returned in your old battery to Apple?

My old battery is still at 98% so I am really not that happy about sending it back. I would much rather have it as a back up (regardless of the very very slim chance it might set my computer on fire)
