the Kindle Fire is coming out next month.

This is meaningless. We've heard ad infinitum for the past few years about what the competition has up their sleeve. And most of it ends up flopping or slowly fizzling.

Amazon has to actually sell these. Best to wait for some solid results before we declare any "iPad-killers", because most of those who are labeled as such end up coming up short.

Give Jeff Bezos a break and set initial sights a little lower to possibly lessen the disappointment later. From what we know so far, the Kindle Fire is no iPad competitor. At all.

Guidance of $9 EPS ? Man. Apple must have some stuff coming out January/February.

Feb: Ipad3 quod core Siri
+ cheaper Ipad2. (I think Apple will adopt the same system as phones that the last year model sells for less price)
mars-april iOS6 beta
June Iphone5

If Apple manage to stick to timetable. iOS5 was 3 month of track.

And we will see Apples first ARM computers. This will revolutionize the market.

Sure I am - I'm all Apple.

But I disagree. The comparison is how many Samsung phones were sold vs iPhones. Fact is - it's not just about phones - it's also about the OS.

If you want iOS - you HAVE to get an iPhone.
If you want Android - you have dozens of phones to choose from.

It's not a real value comparison.

It depends on the question that you want answered. Comparing the OS is not the only interesting statistic in the industry.

LTD compared the best selling Android phones (Galaxy) to the iPhone. Nothing wrong with that. Not very useful, but can be interesting, if you care about that kind of thing.

Actually 3 (3GS, 4 and 4s models are currently on the price list).

But that's a still vastly less than the number of Android phones on the market... by a factor of well over 10X.

How were the results posted though. Are the figures for the 4S - or iPhones in TOTAL.

Amazon has been selling the Fire like crazy. And it's not that it's an iPad "competitor" - but it will eat into iPad sales because not everyone wants to spend the $$ nor to they need a tablet and all it can do - many people are going to love having a media consumption device for WAY less than an iPad which is backed by Amazon.

What I think tomorrow will look like for AAPL:

Open: 394
Low: 377
High: 401

I think the stock will have a pivot of 365 and level 3 support at 330 over the next few weeks and we should see a grind back up to 415 by the end of November. The only thing that will affect the price will be Europe news which may hammer the stock close to 300 (along with the rest of the market).

By the January Q1 earnings call we will see that AAPL beat (bonehead) analysts' expectations and set a new record for the 2011 holiday season. The stock then will be trading at 460.

Kindle won't kill iPad, but will impact iPad sales.
Some of the people buying the Kindle would have bought an iPad otherwise.

Amazon's shareholders should be angry about the Fire. Amazon sells them at a loss. They think that they will make the money back from the Amazon store.

I will laugh (and probably buy a Fire), when the Fire is hacked to run standards Android.

I’ve been a fan of Apple since 1983 when my dad brought home an Apple ][+ his office was getting rid of. I watched as the stock dropped to about $3 adjusted for the two splits. Analysts loved to go around talking about the death of Apple. Even when Steve returned there was almost a palpable glee about the way they predicted doom. I watched as analysts spent quarter after quarter under-estimating AAPL and sneering at their success. “Well they did ok this quarter, but next quarter just you wait…” They invested, but reluctantly almost petulantly and every time there was a set back for Apple they loved to pull out the “I told you so”

The market loves to punish Apple because it succeeds almost to spite the conventional wisdom they live their lives by. They hate that a creative company does business against the grain and suceeds. They loathe the fact they get paid hundreds of thousand to millions of dollars to give their advice and tell the world how the iPhone 4S is a disappointment then watch in embarrassment as the real world buys 4 million of them in a weekend.

I loathe with a passion these ignorant twits who make a living by lying. Who do nothing but move numbers around on a spreadsheet, who contribute nothing meaningful to society. A century from now all that will be remembered of these cancers is they hindered mankind's growth and brought the most powerful nations to their knees because of their greed and hubris.

"Apple also sold 11.12 million iPads during the quarter, up 166 percent over the year-ago quarter"

Thats a disappointment ?

166% increase ?

What do you want a 300% increase ?

Actually, yes. The Q3 growth number was 180+% percent. The expectation was that growth would continue to accelerate. Yes, the iPad market is still growing and Apple owns it all. However, the overall market is not growing as fast as it was.

AAPL stock assumed accelerating growth in all categories and a big beat on the numbers every quarter. This miss will affect the stock.

It doesn't mean that Apple the company is failing, just that the stock is getting ahead of the actual growth rates.

If we overlook graph trading and "support levels".

At 420dollars Apple have a P/E at 15 with 75 billion in cash.

Silly low P/E. The fundamentals for AAPL is much better then 420 dollars.

It was almost given that iPhone sales would be a little weak. These analysts are idiots. Everyone knew that new iPhone(s) were being announced; however, thanks to these idiots, it gives you an opportunity to jump on before the next leg up.

P.S. please consult your adviser before purchasing the stock :D

What hasn't really been mentioned is the record revenue (yearly) or that Apple did much better than even their own guidance.

Time for a bit of "Apple is Doomed" talk to beat down shares in order to pump the buy-ins.

I forgot to mention, this happened to Google earlier this year when they missed analysts' expectation. They missed outlandish expectations but were still profitable. The following quarter, they reported a better quarter and are doing just fine today.

Apple's figures for the iPhone are ALWAYS posted for the whole lineup - in fact, for strategic reasons, Apple doesn't release individual model figures for any of its product lines.

The figures of the phones are until Sept 30.

So Iphone4S is not included.

It really means historically analyst expect more than AAPL does.

Typical greedy traders.

It wouldn't surprise me if the guys overestimated knowing the price would drop and they could then buy low.

Go invent something and be useful.

Of course not.

Which is why the iPhone's results are so damn impressive.

ONE phone. Done right. All you need.

Then why do we see so many complaints about the small iPhone screen size and people wanting them up to 4.5"? People are settling in large numbers for iOS. No ifs and or buts about it. You have to settle for iOS.
That is just one example of many in terms of hardware people have to settle on for iOS.

Historically: 1-2 weeks before every report traders talk up the stock.
After the report AAPL usually falls since "analyst" always finds something to harp about.

I personally kept my AAPL because I thought that iPad would sell better and iPhone a bit more.

The dollar have a big impact since Apples majority selling is outside US. The dollar have gone up 10% and is one of the reasons why Apple don't hit the 30 billion mark.

wow, Apple is kicking ass. Incredible numbers.

Glad to see they are planning to increase their presence in my home country Brazil.

This is reflected in the increase of sales right ?

There's not a whole lot of money in selling apps, music and ebooks. I've read that the high end model is sold at a $40 loss. You have to sell a **** load of apps, music and ebooks just to break even. I think Amazon is banking on their Fire customers to buy lots of other stuff while they're at the site.

Technically, Amazon is NOT selling the Fire since it's not for sale yet. It's on pre-order so items are not SOLD.
