The monitor is separate from the computer. That's a pretty huge advantage.
IIRC the computer itself is actually much more upgradable as well.
Yes, the CPU is separate so you have all the connecting wires to mess with. Additionally, the slot for the CD is way behind the screen vice the iMac which is along side the screen or the Gateway Profile which is directly in front of you at the base.

The Dell stand only supports certain CPUs as well. These are the smaller ones and have limited upgrading as well.

And if in an office where you are operating in an open desk environment vice cubicles, the design is a huge eye sore and looks like something that was jurry rigged together and not a professional solution.

Anyhow, to me, it is a terrible excuse for an all in one design concept.

The iMac and Gateway Profile are much better in that regard.

Can anyone comment on whether Apple might again drop the price on the 23" displays this April? I'd love to get a 23" display with the educational discount for under $1000

Holy thread resurrection Batman! :p :D

A refresh to the display line is definitely due, so the only question is whether or not it will be in the form of a price drop, new displays themselves (with built in iSight, etc.), or both. I would expect to see something in the next couple of months myself, but that's only a guess. I could also see Apple holding off until August and releasing a major display update @ WWDC in conjunction with some Conroe PowerMac news.

I think there may be some minor changes, but unless they release a brand new material for the PMs, I think resolutions may get better and that's about it (the nice divide between pro and consumer materials is just to effective). We might end up having size increases, but then I think you go too far beyond desktop and into home theater...

Oh, and I wouldn't count on iSights being built in. It would kill sales from MBP and iMac owners - "why should I pay for another one of these cameras?" I could see a new iSights being released, with the IR reciever being built into it (and distributed with FR/PB). They could bundle the remote with it or not, and vary the price accordingly. This would provide a nice distribution point for FR along prior models in a single elegant package. Plus they could probably swing a higher markup...

I personally wouldn't like an iSight built into my sleek display...
I'm hoping for more ports, though, and some other improvements, such as resolution, refresh rates, etc.
IIRC the 20" display in the current iMac is already better than the 20" Alu display.

I concur about the iSight. I wouldn't like that either.

Can you elaborate on how the current 20" iMac display is "better" then the 20" Cinema?

The iMac's 20" display is brighter and has twice the contrast ratio of the 20" cinema display.

Now you know.

nooooooo

I wanted this to be a current news item! Argh. I about jumped out of my chair when I saw this pop up.

Sigh. Well, I learned something about the relative merits of CD vs. iMac displays...

touchscreens

nah - cant see it myself.

generally a touch device would be best on the near horizontal plane. too annoying to reach out and touch a vertical device ( imagine trying to reach out and write with a pen on a wall scenario )

As for the displays - cant see them changing much either unless they put the newer iMac panel into the current Alu frame so just the panel gets an upgrade.

I reckon they'll hold out and release a whole new Intel CPU PowerMac line with new displays all as one. That way they are releasing a whole new professional line of computers . . . . "Shipping Today . . . . BOOM! " :p

You mean like this technology, which Apple already has patents for?

1st thought that ran through my head.

Someone, somewhere with a very large R+D budget watch's wayyy too much Star Trek.

2nd thought.

Very, very cool - but not child/toddler/beer/coffee/pizza/grease friendly.
