Has anybody seen how big the SSD portion of the fusion drives is? Is it 128GB like it used to be, or have they changed them all to the tiny 24GB version? or some other size?
Hit the wrong thread with my question, edited it out.So was looking at the thread announcing the 2014 5K iMac, which was $2499. The new one is $1799 for a better CPU, better GPU, better display, faster 8GB of RAM and faster 1TB Fusion Drive. Essentially the same price as what the 2014 non-Retina 27" was.
If you mean the 21.5", it will be available for sale at Apple Stores tomorrow so is probably going to be put up tonight after closing.
Pretty hard to improve on perfection.
Perfection is the Surface Studio, where the computing components aren't jammed up against the display and wrapped in some goofy-looking domed cover.
Love the focus on the iMac, but was hoping for a redesigned enclosure. Oh well, looks great.

I'm curious. What do you think needs redesigning? Do you just want new for new's sake? Or can you actually think of ways to improve the enclosure? I feel like the iMac is more or less the pinnacle of all-in-one design.

No way. I dig the Surface Studio. The way it tilts down and allows the user to write on the screen is awesome, as is the ability to use touch. But the design is pretty clunky. The pizza box base is far from elegant. How often do you see the domed cover on the iMac? More often than not they are up against a wall and it looks very sleek and slim from the front.
I'm a pro user and I'm not gawking at the price, but the fact that it won't be readily available until 2018.. There is no reason to announce something that far off other than to just tease the Pro users and appease the people who say they just make consumer hardware. Also iMac Pro can't be used in a Rack Mount environment. In my studio all the Professional computers are housed in a central machine room, with monitors and peripherals run via extension boxes. This is common practice with commercial film and tv production studios.. An iMac Pro is overkill IMHO. Misses what a Pro User is entirely.
That said.. I would love to have one for my home..
The iMac was last redesigned 5 long years ago in 2012, but the front face of its remains unchanged since the introduction of the 27" and 21.5" form factor all the way back in 2009! So yea, part of it is change for change sake, but also the advent of thin bezel displays that eliminate virtually all unnecessary distractions around the display itself is appealing enough that it would be nice to shrink the bezels and the chin on the iMac. I still think the design is nice, but after 8 years, I'd hope they could make a visual change to the front, that's all. I still like it though, but I wouldn't say it's at it's pinnacle.
I hope they fixed the funny smell the iMacs were putting out like burnt glue from the 3m adhesive to the displaynot really forgetting the display - just ignoring it. I know if I had 2 5K displays sitting next to that MBP it's probably going to be closed. It is a laptop after all...
I'd worry about what I want in 5 years...in 5 years. I don't think it's unreasonable to want an update to the front face I've been staring at for nearly a decade across two different iMacs I've owned (2010 and 2013 models). I (and many people) wanted this with a computer on the back. And if they shrunk the bezel, what would you want in five years? And what unnecessary distractions? The logo? Seriously, is it really a distraction??? I'm sorry, but I think it's all about change for change sake. Personally I'm far more concerned with features and performance.
We didn't expect them so fast did we?!![]()

Why are you using your iMac's HDD for Time Machine? For that matter, how can you?
This is a better example of what people would want...It's subtle, but would have been appreciated. Don't worry, I'm probably still going to buy one simply for the big jump to 5K from my 2560x1440 2013 model (with the same design, ha).Really? That ugly Asus monitor? It looks cheap. Apple isn't going to marginalize their logo and branding. I don't think it's unreasonable to want something new. Just unrealistic. One day I'm sure we'll have an anti-gravity base and the screen will float. Or maybe there won't be a screen at all, just a holographic projection. But until we get there, the only option is to tweak the existing formula and I have yet to see another monitor or all-in-one that looks remotely as elegant as the iMac. Furthermore, minimizing the branding only makes the iMac look more like everyone else, all the others who have copied Apple. There's no way they're going to do something that makes the iMac look less like an iMac.
The inside is what really matters ;-)

And yet so many "professionals" have iMacs on their desks.
The iMac Pro is going to be a strong seller for Apple. Which is good, because it will show them that if they offer better performance, it will be rewarded with better sales which is good for everyone, pro and non-pro alike.
Why? What problem does the current iMac have that demands reengineering?
I believe the bezels are too large for a modern display. It's not a problem per se, but it would be a nice to see for sure.
