You are not a gamer then. The PS3 has come good games.

But the new apple TV will get some good use. Its a totally different animal and if the netflix integration is as fast as it is in the Ipad and Iphone 4....it will rule.

Not really. I get in the occasional game on my iP4 or iPad and we hardly ever get the chance to play on the PS3. With a kid turning 3 this year and another one almost 1, I use my Apple TV for photos, music, especially with the remote app, and of course streaming movies. Putting on a short or a movie for my older kid is a snap. And I don't even want to know what the headaches would be accessing that content on a gaming system. The Apple TV works so well my wife knows it inside and out. The PS3, very light gaming and the rare Blu-ray.

if i hadn't bought a PS3 right before the announcement i'd think about getting it. but i needed something to play netflix and youtube on the TV.

wifi enabled blu ray players were $199 so I spent the extra $100 on the PS3 since it can do so much more. anything netflix doesn't have i can rent via Sony's online store or via Time Warner Cable. and Sony will stream 1080p

I got this email, but the odd thing is... I didn't order an ATV

I added it to my shopping cart along with a new iPod Touch when they were announced, but removed the ATV at the last minute before placing the order... However--that being said--I won't complain if Apple is gonna give me money...nor would I complain if an ATV showed up on my doorstep :D

lol probably just the person writing the query forgot to check the active flag.

I think I know what is going on. Apple is having problems making the case black enough. :D

I have xbox and ps3 and the biggest problem with it? Sound. It's so loud when running. No matter if it's the disc or the internal. The fans suck. The xbox was better because it doesn't require a disc (BUT it does require a gold account which could cost $50+ annually), but it would pick up noise too and to be honest, the xbox doesn't have a good track record for a device that can be kept "on all the time". As said by someone else, playing music or video of another computer was difficult at best and usually required a 3rd party app. This is far more convenient with airplay.

They do this often. Whenever a new product is released and people are dumb enough to select expedited shipping, Apple refunds it.

Any time a product is announced and pre-orders are accepted, Apple works with the shipping carriers to make sure the first orders placed through Apple will receive their product the same day it is available in stores. Happens with the iPad, iPhone, and every other product they take pre-orders before availability.

I am not sure about the rumors that Apple has had 100 times the orders for the App TV than they have had for every version of the iPhone to date. I think it is a bit excessive to believe every household in America purchasing 20 of the device. I think most people will make due with two or three.

Apple could make toilet paper right now and people would buy it! :D

Here's one for you...

Here's one for all the folks touting the mini HDMI output connectors on their new phones, which they feel makes them "soo much better than an iPhone".

Since AppleTV has an HDMI out to provide HD video to your TV, and the iPhone will use AirPlay to stream content wirelessly to the AppleTV, does that mean that Apple wins again since its easier to go wirelessly than having to crawl behind your TV every time you want to hook up your phone.

Now don't come back at me with "...well I can hook it up anywhere I want office, home blah, blah, blah..." or "well at least I don't have to spend an extra $99.00 to put things on my TV...", and will someone with an HDMI output on their phone please tell us exactly how often you actually use that ability?

Thoughtful replies welcome.

Thanks! ;-)

Sept 28

My prediction is ATV2 drops Sept 28, same day that Iron Man 2 comes out on Blu Ray and DVD... logic being that Steve demo'd Iron Man 2 during the Keynote Presentation.

I never really understood those "video out" port on gadgets like camera, phones etc. How many people really hook their gadgets to the TV like that anyway. It might be fun when you first have it, but it gets really old after a while.

It's not about fun or novelty, it's about easier viewing.

If I've shot 10 gigabytes of AVCHD at 1080p resolution, it's easier to preview the clips on a television set or large monitor than view it on the camcorder's 3-inch screen. That way I can delete the clips I don't want before I plug in the USB 2.0 cable for the hour that it will take to download the footage to my computer.

you must not have the PS3 Slim. mine is silent.

i heard the original ones got so hot you could heat your house with them.

What Time?!?!?!??!

What time did you guys order your apple tvs?

I ordered mine at 1:54 pst and it still says that mine is shipping in september and i havent received an email from apple about getting my expedited shipping refunded(yes i paid an extra 17$ to have it expedited).

I really want this apple tv mainly for netflix since my ps3 audio went out like five weeks ago, in order to watch netflix i have to hook my laptop up to my tv....annoying

I think it depends on how you currently use your ATV. For some folks, the new one won't work, and viceversa. I'm in the former group. My ATV is tied to all speakers in my house - both physically and via AirTunes/Airport Exp. I can be in bed, and pick up either one of our iOs devices, and browse through my entire music library and hit play...et voila. Music throughout the house. That won't be possible with the new one, since AirPlay is based on the content of the source device so what's on the iPad may not be the same as what's on mine or my wife's iPhone. For parties, this won't work for me, as I don't want to know which device is streaming the music to the ATV and I definitely don't want my Mac on and open. I want to know (and control) that the ATV is doing it all directly and control it from whichever iOS device is in the vicinity.

But, to each his own!

You see that USB port on the back of the ATV? You think you can't just plug in an external hard drive into that?

I have to say that purchasing this stuff on Amazon is much more cost affective. For example I just purchased the Apple batteries and charger for the same price as on Apple's web site. Apple would have charged me shipping because its under the limit. Amazon did not.

Another thing to consider is sales tax. i actually believe in sales tax for internet purchases to level the playing field with local business. That said, sales tax is not mandated for internet purchases currently. When I purchased the battery charger, amazon did not charge sales tax. I took the Apple purchase all the way to check out before bailing and they were going to charge me sales tax based on my zip code.

Now as far as the new Apple TV goes, it is listed on amazon but by third party sellers for twice the price. Its bizarre. I'm sure once its released it will be available on amazon. So don't go there yet to put it in your basket.

One last thing about amazon. If you shop through them, put items in your basket and check everyday. The prices go up and down. Wait for items to drop. And if they go up the day after you put them in there, they will drop again if you wait usually. I do this with mobile me. It is $99 through Apple. But put it in your basket on amazon and watch it. I've picked it up for $79 on there with free shipping. But don't wait until the last minute if you plan to watch the price and use the slower free shipping option. Plan to purchase a month or two ahead.

(I'm not trying to promote amazon. The same is probably true at other online stores. I'm just pointing out there are ways to save some money on these products.)

I've read that port is for programming the unit actually. I think it s like the usb port on a directv unit. You would think an external HD is an option. But it isn't.

I would guess that if the networks were to fight Apple on this, Apple will just start putting out some new network storage devices.

Um, actually no, I don't see a USB port on the back of the new ATV. The old one has it and I've used it. But even if there were one (which there isn't)...why would I do that? So I can turn it into the device I already own?

If you shoot 1080p video, you want to watch it that way on your 1080p set. If you go for the convenient method of processing it for :apple:TV, you downgrade from 1920x1080 to either 1280 x 720 or 960 x 540 at best. Those of us with :apple:TVs do this anyway for the convenience, but when we want to show the pictures at full "wow", we have to use those ports, as Apple choosing (max 720p) for us doesn't give us any other :apple:TV-like way.:(

I see what you're saying here, in that your content is on your original ATV. So I'm not arguing with you, necessarily. But it also sounds like you're saying content MUST be on the iOS device, and I don't think that will turn out to be true, either. Most of my content will remain in iTunes on my desktop Mac. I'm pretty sure AirPlay will absorb the AirTunes functionality, too. So I will be able to use the iOS Remote app to browse my full library, and choose to play it on my new ATV (just using the iPhone as the remote). Isn't this now possible with AirTunes? I guess we'll know for a fact what works and doesn't in the very near future :)

Yeah AirPlay does absorb AirTunes - it's doing it already with iTunes now using the AirPlay icon to control my Airport Express speakers. At any rate, my thing is, I don't want to leave my MacBook on with iTunes running 24/7. The new model introduces an extra piece of hardware in the mix (the device with the source content) to the ATV and remote model since the ATV can no longer source its own content. That's all I'm saying. I think it's really cool that one will be able to stream audio/video to another device, but honestly, I would have been ok paying a little more to have an ATV with a hard drive that can be a standalone device, rather than more of a conduit. Not sure what the big deal is with syncing and why they made fun of it at the keynote. People sync their phone and their iPods...don't see the difference.

Actually, yes there is one (mini USB port), but, like the old :apple:TV, it isn't normalized so that it can be used from something like local storage. We can hope that the hackers will find a way to enable that kind of function (for those of us that appreciate the idea of local storage).

What's this?
