does anyone remember when Apple used to make "the fastest laptop"??

It's a screaming fast laptop, providing you're judging on real-world performance rather than paper hardware specs.

And nope, I don't ever remember Apple making the fastest laptop in the Intel days. There were always Windows laptops with better hardware specifications, but again, hardware/software balance made for a better product. Possibly the most recent Apple laptop that was the outright most powerful was the TiBook.

I was a bit skeptical about seeing new MBPs so soon, but this is indeed good news.

Why would they release a new keyboard without an accompanying desktop mac?
Any chance that one or more of these IDs are for new iMacs?

If you look at the numbers, they match up with iMac, mini and pro computers. Not sure that means anything.
You're right, these model numbers all match up with existing Macs! A1347, for example:

This will be disappointing for many, if they update only the processors to Kabylake

A computer does it's job for me or it simply doesn't. I really enjoy my current 15-inch 2016 Macbook Pro and I've no regrets that I've bought it many months ago. It's a truly remarkable and quite powerful laptop, designed also for the next generation accessories with both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3.

That's my opinion, what 'many' others might think is not relevant for my decision for buying stuff fortunately.

...unfortunately, that is almost certainly what is happening.

alongside a new 12-inch MacBook, with the outside chance of a new upgraded MacBook Air also in the frame

Although the 5 models might be Air, MBP 12", MBP 13" non-tb, MBP 13", MBP 15" they could just as easily be:

13" MBP non-touchbar
13" MBP touchbar/256GB
13" MBP touchbar/512GB
15" MBP touchbar/256GB
15" MBP touchbar/512GB

...corresponding nicely to the 5 MBP base models on the Apple store.

Also, at least on the UK store, the 12" MB and Air are still "Delivers 1st June" whereas the MBPs have been pushed back post-WWDC... except (for some reason) the 13" MBP touchbar/256GB (perhaps the new processor will just go in the 512GB model?)

Lets say, if iOS11 has some exclusive feature such as 3D touch gestures, then they have to have new iPad Pro with force touch hardware to make the demo, right.

Let's hope they make a proper laptop this time rather than an expensive netbook. One with decent key travel, actual proper function keys rather than that useless bar, storage and RAM options to match other high-end laptops (Dell Precision and Lenovo P), and a move away from soldered on parts - let us upgrade the RAM and storage ourselves if we want to. I'm not bothered if the laptop is thicker, because the completion is thicker but is more capable. I want a machine I can work on all day not one for writing a fashion bog in Starbucks.

Why? Because Apple is not waiting a year or years to update hardware? I'm a sentient adult. I assume anyone spending a thousand or thousands of dollars on tech understands what they are buying when they buy it. If not then it's the old adage "a fool and his money...."

I bought a 2016 15" MBP and lots of things about it I wasn't excited about but made the buy anyway because my MBP at the time had a bit of age on it. I could have waited, always an option, but something new is always on the horizon. Question is how big of a change will that "new" be. A processor upgrade is not a big deal to me. I'm very happy to have had use of a faster machine these past few months. 100% no regrets in that regard.

Hopefully those that did decide to delay their purchase will get something closer to the machine they were looking for on the 5th.

What else did you expect? They launched a new generation of MacBook Pro less than a year ago and you want a complete redesign again?

Absolutely. The current one is the definition of an iToy! It's pretty, but useless. Crap keyboard, trackpad is too big (and palm rejection not good enough), there's no matte screen option, RAM is limited to 16GB (the competition do 32GB or 64GB), storage options are too expensive, there's no Ethernet port. And before anyone goes comparing the Ethernet port to a CD drive, Ethernet ports are still widely used in the real world as you can't always rely on a wireless connection or if their is one it won't always give you access to the resources you need to do your work, you need a wired connection for that. And if anyone mentions dongles/adaptors, bend over I have a pile of them you can have!!

Could be in the usual "Apple success" run down -- a one liner about how pros "love" the redesigned MBP and now it's even more powerful..." <mandatory clap, clap, clap by attending Apple employees>. Followed by full press release when event ends.

Well, the sales numbers makes clear that the MacBook Pro is a huge succes. But sales records aside, I'me more interested in what it can do for me. I'm a professional user, I simply make money when working with the latest MacBook Pro 15 inch and I can honestly state that this machine is quite powerful. It has no issues dealing with huge amount of hi-res tiff files simultaneously with batch commands and more. The usb-c connection with thunderbolt 3 is a great step forward i.m.h.o.

I understand some of the criticism, but many criticasters out there can easily be addressed as hysterical.

Surely nobody wants new hardware these days, we're more interested in Carpool Karaoke?

Except rumor is you need to have really fast, modern hardware to view Carpool Karaoke. I hear to view it will require an iPad Pro or and iPhone 6s or newer or an iMac with a Radeon M380 GPU or better or a Mac Pro 2016 or newer or an Apple TV 4 (Mid 2017). However, audio only is available on a 6th generation iPod Touch :D
