The CPUs in the 2018 MacBook Pro were released in April of 2018. Intel tends to stagger their rollouts over a long period of time. They did not release as many 9th Gen CPUs (three, to be exact) and any additional 9th Gen CPUs will trickle out over the course of 2019 to help pad things out until Cannon Lake yields are high enough to start shipping. There will be no CPU updates to the 2018 MacBook Pro For at least another year, possibly longer than that.

Apple is not dropping prices anytime soon.
Thanks for the info. Really helpful! so I honestly appreciate it.

Still, I will hold back 1 week just in case maybe they make some small updates - never know.
1 week of waiting I can handle... I hope :)

Actually, the original Mini had only two USB and a FW400 (plus Ethernet). LOVED when it had five USB. I’d be happy if they went back to that, but we’ll see. Agree that HDMI is likely. I doubt we’ll have MiniDP now that there’s Thunderbolt. SD would be dumb imo but wouldn’t surprise me. We may well see the audio out jack go away.
I think that audio out is likely, and maybe even audio in.

SD is stupid. Especially since they insisted on putting it on the BACK, for aesthetic reasons (IMHO).

Either 2 USB-C/TB3 and 2 USB-A, like the iMac 2017, or 4 USB-C/TB3 and no USB-A, like the MBPs.

HDMI would be nice. And it would make up for the fact that the mini doesn't have an integrated Display. So, a mini could potentially drive FIVE 4k monitors, or TWO 5k monitors and a 4k.

That'd be REALLY nice for Development, and for FCP and Logic...

The current Mini I'd BTO (if I wanted to ignore the 4 year old internals) would cost ~$1400.

The Hackintosh parts I have in mind for a Mini Hackintosh total around $1300.

If Apple announces a new Mac Mini and I can BTO it the way I want for anywhere close to $1400, I'll buy. I suspect with BTO storage and (hopefully) graphics options, the top price could hit $2799?

I am betting that the only upgraded graphics would be the intel/AMD i7-8809 of some sort.

Of course the optimist in me points to Intel's recent event that introduced new processors tis month. Gen9 was announced to be available on 11/5 and Apple has a major hardware update announcement scheduled on 10/30. Problem is that the event focused on Desktop/Gaming 165W processors and Apple doesn't use them. Of course the new Xeon does look like a very high performance road to the new Mac Pro!

[doublepost=1540394349][/doublepost]The problem with the applause is that Apple wouldn’t see it as sarcasm. They would see it as they are the greatest thing since sliced bread for making people wait allthis time for a refresh! I mean look how happy they now are!!
Why would you see it as a sarcastic action?

Perhaps it would be a heartfelt "FINALLY!" "Thank you for affirming your commitment to the Mac line!" "We were beginning to wonder..."

All Apple needs to do, to please the majority of past and potential future Mini buyers, is to take the pre-2014 Mini, add current internals (including decent BTO processor and discrete graphics options), and allow user upgrades of ram and storage.

If the starting price point falls around $999, it'll sell like hotcakes to this group.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a non-upgradable ram/storage "Good" i3 ($799?), "Better" user-upgradable ram/storage i5 with a variety of BTO options, and a "Best" user-upgradable ram/storage i7 with the same BTO options, including i9 and discrete graphics.

Boom, confetti.

Hope so (and not your other scenario ... which did make me chuckle :D)

Other than the laptops, what "junk keyboards" will Apple be "anchoring" the Desktop Macs with?

You are free to put something like THIS on your nice new iMac Pro, iMac or Mac mini if you so desire...

... or this (and it's not even limited to iMac/MP/MM, note machine in the background :D)

Got tired of waiting, and so now I do Hackintoshes. Apple has clearly thrown in the towel on their desktops. The 8th generation Intels have been out over a year now...
Apple’s never really cared about a few random users stealing their OS. Mac sales are driven by business, pro, and home users who have no interest in trying to keep a Hackintosh going.

If Apple ever decides to care about Hackintoshes, they’ll lock MacOS down tight so fast your head will spin :)

Im pretty sure people have this 999 pricing way off. The current Macbook 12” is 1249. Apple launching a Macbook 13.3” (cannibalising the Air 13.3” and Macbook 12”) and then reducing prices by 250 over the current Macbook 12, doesn’t make sense.

They’ll upgrade the internals of the 12” and keep the price at 1249, new 13.3” will be 1449 And replace the non touchbar MacBook Pro.

iPad Pros with USB C are lined up to take the sub 1000 market.

I think you are on to something. Apple just doesn’t seem interested in the entry level laptop market. They are very much committed to the iPad Pro, which they see as overlapping with the entry level laptop. I am not defending their position here......it just seems to be the way they are operating.

Frankly, I don't see Apple putting a lot of development resources into a new entry level laptop......especially one priced at $999. I think it is more likely that they will offer a stripped down 128GB version of the rMB with last year’s specs for $999.

Regarding the MacBook Pros, I thought I'd heard rumblings about AMD releasing some new Vega GPUs sometime soon, though those may not be the mobile chips like I'd like to think at the moment and may not come out until next year, anyway. Something to think about, anyway. Oh, and they could fix the keyboard (for good, this time!) at least. I'd like more ports, myself, but there're only so many PCIe lanes to go around, so dongle purgatory it is…

Unlikely, due to the very disparate needs of the Mac mini class CPUs and chipsets that we are most likely to see next Tuesday versus what a potential Mac Pro will end up with when it debuts in 2019.

Chances are we are looking at 28w and/or 45w TDP parts versus 165w TDP with x1 and x2 (330w) CPUs common to the Intel Xeon CPU. The hardest part would be that certain chipsets support certain ports, while others do not and so any CPU module would need to contain DRAM slots, external ports, cooling and power, basically negating your above proposal. Plus, no one looking at a mini wants to pay for Xeon level stuff that would not benefit them.

Apple has not even disclosed what to expect in terms of CPUs for the Mac Pro. Will they continue to use the Intel Xeon W CPU, which is a single CPU solution and ranges from 4-cores all the way up to 18-cores? Or will they move to Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs, which would most likely start at a 10-core single CPU base model, but could support dual CPUs? Will Apple use Xeon Silver, Gold or Platinum or a mix of all of them?

I would much rather see a modular Mac mini, with options specific to it, and a separate modular Mac Pro for the professional user who wants that particular kind of flexibility. Trying to build a one size fits all is bound to compromise too much for all involved.
There’s a 28-core W-series Xeon now, W-3175X. Could easily be a $10+k part though. It has a high TDP so Apple would need a custom SKU if they decide to add a 28-core CPU to the lineup. Using lower-binned parts and locked to a lower frequency I could see pricing around $4k.

The Air will indeed have TB3; but either 1 or 2 ports (I hope 2!). This is opposed to the 2018 13" MBP, with grew another 2 TB ports (for 4 total, just like the 15") :

https://support.apple.com/kb/SP775?locale=en_US

The most likely CPU candidates (i5-8265U and i7-8565U) both have x16 lanes of PCI 3.0, so they could theoretically support two Titan Ridge TB3 controllers.

However, in order to keep the costs and parts counts down to the minimum, I believe that Apple is going to put two USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports (one on either side, plus audio jack), since Gen 2 support is integrated into the CPU's built-in PCH and provides a natural Pro versus Consumer delineation for Apple to upsell users to a 13" MacBook Pro.

Apple is now pushing USB-C harder than it is Thunderbolt 3, because it has wider appeal, lower cost of entry and, frankly, USB is now as fast as Thunderbolt 1 was, but it is still good, old familiar USB.

I expect as a result of this, the 12" MacBook will move to Amber Lake 5w Y-Series and its single USB-C port will also move to Gen 2.

Apple has probably figured out how to get the 12" model to 1TB SSD and longer battery life, but both will be capped at 16GB or LPDDR3 (probably 2133MHz, possibly still 1866MHz). 802.11ac Wave 2 and Bluetooth 5.0 round out the rest of the features.

Hopefully, they are able to equip both MacBook models with P3 wide color Retina Displays.

For me, I am looking for something mind numbingly simple. I have an iPad for my mobile computing needs. I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I just need a simple Mac desktop to replace my clamshelled MBA when it gives up th ghost. For me, Apple does not need to overachieve with the new Mac Mini:
  • Update the processor
  • 8gb RAM on base model
  • 128 GB SSD standard
  • Perhaps replace an existing port with USB-C
How difficult would this be to do? Sell it for about $650. Then, you could buy the base iPad plus base Mac MIni for less than $1,000. Almost everyone has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse laying around the house. Add a decent keyboard case for the iPad and off you go. It would be a great way to keep folks fully in the Apple ecosystem. But, I doubt Apple will do it.

any bets on how much the possible new mac mini will cost? 1799 and up.

Update After Apple Event

Wow, I could not be more wrong. Apple went with desktop class processors and user upgradeable memory, I love it but my pocket book hates it.

Complain about that one thing Apple forgot that completely screws them over and makes it a completely worthless update, how greedy Tim Cook is and how much he hates computers and by association, all computer users. Plus, they are moving to Windows and Android, will never purchase another Apple product and how a once great company has turned on its users.

PS - Random words and phrases that will also be spoken/written: crap Touch Bar, crap keyboard, soldered RAM, useless ports, form over function, no HDMI, no SD Card Slot, I can build a Mac twice as powerful for half the cost, Apple has lost its way, etc etc etc.

Have I missed anything?
Only that Apple will be going out of business soon, and should just return the money for their stock purchases back to the investors...

Since Apple offers the MacBook with only USB-C, I wonder if a differentiating feature of the MacBook Pro over the MacBook family will be Thunderbolt. I really don't understand the place of the Air in the lineup anymore. It started as the Apple ultrabook but the MacBook is now smaller. I understand MacBook vs MacBook Pro, but the Air just seems like a machine whose time has passed.

Hopefully they will at least add two USB/TB ports. One port which is also used to charge is rather limiting.

Yes I think the new MBA replacement will be USB-C 3.1 gen 1 or gen 2 only. No Thunderbolt 3. It could come to the MB line (and by that I mean 5W Y-series) when TB3 is supported on-package, which I think is Ice Lake.

The Air has one purpose: $999. It’s probably Apple’s single best-selling notebook model, for this very reason. Any replacement will hit that same price point. I don’t expect retina at that price but it’s definitely to have a much better display.

I hope there is an iMac redesign. It's had the same design for 6 years, and from the front, it's looked relatively the same since 2007. It could use a serious bezel reduction and redesigned fan system for new processors. I'm betting on just a refresh though.

That all sounds very specific ... a little __too__ specific if you ask me ... :D

I like it! Add a couple of decent eGPU options in a matching, stackable chassis and I'm sold :)

You are welcome, glad to help! Unless your workflow really needs a MacBook Pro, you may find that this new MacBook (Air) replacement is all that you need. Counting down the days and hours now.

The mac mini will be retired & replaced by the mac micro. All flash & same size as :apple:TV, maybe ARM, with the same useful ports aka 2 usb c, & of course, obligatory $400 increase & no way of upgrading. The smaller they make 'em the more they can ship, remember this is the new :apple:!;)
