What's the problem?

Choices are great!

This is a one time thing you do, just like all the other options Apple themselves put up on all iOS devices during setup

I'll take Firefox at the bottom there btw...thx
Btw - I like it. EU should fine Apple just because they tried to kick Epic.

I get the impression that Epic is fighting on Apple on this because they can also afford to completely lose the iOS market should they lose so they can see how far they can take this. I suspect if this works out well for Epic, they're gonna go after MSFT, Sony and the rest, where their real revenue streams are.

What Epic fans here are not reading but should is Apple leveraged the EU to get assurances that Epic will comply with Contract Law and if they do not they are gone.

Public Second Chances always fail and the EU will have to admit that once Sweeney again shoots his mouth off and breaks the contract. When that happens the EU will be forced to abstain from negotiating on Epic's behalf.

if you don't know this happens then you don't know politics.

Wrong

They were forced to backtrack by the EU.

Embarrassing stuff from Apple. PATHETIC even.
The fact that you are taking anything he says at 100% face value is funny considering that is perhaps the single most biased person in relation to not only Apple's enforcement, but also in terms of third party app stores in general. Even though the timing of Apple's actions are obviously petty, they do still have the right by US court of law to ban Epic and it's other accounts (as they have stated already) because Epic LOST their court case. The real reason Apple is backtracking is because they waited to do it too close to the DMA enforcement date, which makes it look especially monopolistic.

Sort of hilarious how the US won’t have Fortnite on their iPhones because we’re terrified of opening up the walled garden to *gasp* alternative app stores! Enjoying all that wild innovation happening here in the states.
The alternative stores are something that a microscopic number of users wants. Of course companies want it now they have established businesses on the backs of Apple. 99.99999999999% of people will never leave the Apple App Store.

How long before Epic breaks their promises and Apple gets to dump them again?
You mean Apple wanted assurances Epic wouldn't be total *******s and disregard rules again? Yeah, total dick move.
Why are we calling this an alternative app store when Apple controls it? It's just another Apple App Store when Apple can ban developer accounts, institute (unreasonable) Core Tech Fees, and prevent E.U. residents from accessing it if they're away from home for too long.
I dont know where you guys are from, but things work a little bit differently in the EU.
For example... all the "rules" apple has set up for their "compliance" to our new law(Digital Markets Act) are pretty much irrelevant and some of them even illegal under the DMA if you understand the new law.
Apple has 0 say in who they approve/let compete with them and create the rival App Store on the iOS and they are NOT allowed to ban/terminate any competition regardless if they break what Apple calls their "rules" for the EU.
What they consider compliance is malicious compliance at best and borderline illegal.
For example the "Core Technology Fee" is straight up illegal.
DMA mandates that Apple is to set up their OS in such way that it enables any willing competitor to develop and deploy their rival store FOR FREE.
The only company that decides which apps can and can not be published on rival app store is the rival app store developer/owner.
So when Epic creates and publishes their App Store in the EU there is NOTHING Apple can do to remove them and can not dictate what apps can and can not be published.
Only scenario where Apple can refuse an App to be published is if said app has verifiable malicious code inside of it that will harm the iOS users.

So ladies and gentlemen this year will be full of fireworks, and im gonna go on a limb and say that starting next month after EU Commission reviews all the proposed compliance changes Gatekeepers have sent them that they will immediatelly start a full investigation into Apple for their Core Technology Fee among other things that they are not supposed to dictate.
As you could have seen by events in past weeks, EU has teeth and it will force Apple to change any and all things that is not within our laws, pulling out of market big as EU is not an option for Apple because their shareholders would take a giant L and that would most likely result in board starting to replace Apple Execs who thought that this petty route and complete disregard of our laws was a good idea.

Please do not call me an Apple hater or anything like that, i am a developer and a fan of technology in general, i love Iphones and i use Macs for work on daily basis but that does not mean that i cant be objective towards what they have been doing for years already regarding to their anti consumer, anti competitive and anti developer practices.

This is hilarious. I knew all along it would come to this but I didn’t imagine it would be so quick. What a huge embarrassment for Apple, hopefully they will have learnt their lesson but I suspect not. I sense huge fines coming Apple’s way…

“Apple claimed that the account had been terminated because Epic Games had previously breached its contractual obligations, and that the court decision in the Epic Games v. Apple legal battle gave it the right to shut down any Epic Games account at any time.”

So basically Apple just closed their account as a matter of course. No evidence to back it up, no looking into weather or not their application followed ‘their‘ rules, Apple just automatically closed it. Apple basically stating if you break their rules once, you are permabanned in effect.

My guess will be they have instantly reinstated it due to the huge and justified threat of large EU fines and injunctions against them for breaching their new alternative App Store regulations, and Epic no doubt warming its lawyers up for suing Apple.
lt shows how petty Apple truly can be sometimes. and we had endless comments on here defending Apple slating Epic. How wrong were you all. Egg on your face today!

The purpose of an alternative store is so you don't have to go to Apple (or in your example Target) and get their approval to sell your products. You can set up your own shop away from Apple (or Target in your case) by using your own resources and not Apple's (or Target's in your case).
Off the backbone of someone else’s platform, so the Target analogy is still accurate.

Better example would be the owner of a mall. They built a place everyone wants to go to do their shopping, and now others are demanding they get to put up a booth in the mall and not pay rent.

As much as I wish Apple would do this voluntarily, and will take advantage of alternative app stores if they ever come to the US, I think it's ridiculous Apple is being forced to do this.

That is completely irrelevant.
Consumers deserve to have a choice and plenty of options to pick from.
You just wait until companies kill their apps on Apple Store and move to Alternative Stores in order to save 30% and offer their services at decreased prices and almost no BS from Apple.
You are probably right that vast majority will stay where they are because apple users are mostly simple people and not tech savy.
But users who want cheaper prices for things they spend money on monthly basis will probably be glad there is such an option.
I know il be the first person to move and encourage my coworkers to start developing on Epic or any other store that comes out for the EU market.

It is incredibly confusing for normal users. Not the sort of people who post here, but that 100% would result in a confused phone call "which one do I pick" from multiple of my family members.
Most phones are Android-based and the universe isn’t folding in on itself just because those users have other options for a dialer or even their entire interface.

It will be okay.

The way this so-called alternative app store works now is like having to ask Target for permission to start your own mom & pop business selling items that would compete with Target. And if you have anything negative to say about Target, Target can terminate your business license whenever they feel like it.

So I can just use Targets infrastructure and millions of customer and not have to pay them a single penny? I also plan on using their water, electricity, employees as well.

Lol, good.

Now it’s funnier reading the comments at the article above, of people relishing over big bad Epic being banned from the EU.

Rough news day for people who don’t want Fortnite on iOS for some reason.

Oh isn’t it just. The icing on the cake would be if the EU fined Apple, which I think they may still do, over breaching its new alternative App Store regulations.
