...well, it took a while to read all that. But thought I should savour this post, as I do not do it very often!

This morning I woke up and forgot to post my signed finance agreement with Apple Finance, for a MacBook Pro and iWorks '06 - total £1906 app.

This afternoon, I cancelled said order and replaced it with a shiny new 17" model (kept the 100GN 7200 drive) and iWorks '06 - total £2054 app.

Someone is looking down on me :D :D :D :D :D

[Usual lurking is resumed]

I never thought I would be GLAD that my first MBP gave me so many problems. Whew. And that I didn't mail my MBP back on saturday *double whew*. Now I get to trade my defective machine for the new 17". Triple whew.

I read recently that the smaller panels cost a lot more to produce than larger panels due to the economies or scale production. I can't remember the specifics but I think the 14" panels was ~$100 cheaper than the 12".
I guess that also explains why cell-phones and digital cameras start at $2000 - those 1.5" and 2" displays are very expensive.

I would want the smallest OS X machine Apple can mangage. 7" diagonal? I'll take it. Pocketable? Better yet! 10 or 11" would be fine.

I'd hook it up to an external display when I needed more--and almost everywhere I go HAS an external display I could connect to. Meanwhile, the thing is small enough that I would have it with me more often. Your laptop does you no good if you left it at home :)

My hope is that as Mac sales climb, Apple will be able to offer more models that meet smaller niches--like an ultraportable (maybe pocketable) Mac. Or a thick-and-heavy mega-laptop. Or a 19" laptop. Or one with really high density. Or a mid-range mini-tower. Or a gamer's iMac with top-end GPU. Or an Intel CRT all-in-one for schools. Etc.

I hope that Apple releases a Macbook13.3" version
that has ugraded specs, not just a replacement ibook
type of computer. People who use mac laptops for
live audio, samples, and softsynths like to keep it
really small. I could imagine one with these specs
for that crowd:

Macbook 13.3"
Core Duo upgradeable to 2.16ghz
100GB 7200rpm hard drive
1GB Ram, upgradeable to 2GB
4x DVD burner
Intel integrated graphics

Is there any reason this wouldn't work? Most people
who need a small laptop won't need a high end graphics
processor, but still might need the power of the pro-level
machines in other areas.

Awesome 17" - Welcome return of DL and FW800 at a decent price!!!

The only thing I'd gripe about is, they really should be putting
a 1080 res. screen on these 17" It's just so silly that panal manufacturers, especially on your typical 20" WS display, only go 1050 instead of 1080. Maybe it'll come someday...

Otherwise, I generally prefer a 15". I hope this 17" means lower prices, DL, and fw800 in the future for the 15" by the time Merom and 10.5 come out.

Come on. Apples to apples here. Those are low-rez
displays, and he was talking about computer screens.

17.5 percent VAT in the UK, which is included in the quoted price. Sales tax in the USA is different from state to state, much much lower than 17.5 percent, and never included in the quoted price. That means anyone in the US who orders a MacBook Pro for $2999 will actually pay more than $2999 because the appropriate sales tax will be added.

Then there are those of us in Canada who pay up to 15% in taxes (7% GST and 8% PST in Ontario) -- our 17" MBP has a base price of $3299 Cdn, but when all is said and done, you pay $3793.85 for the computer.

4 grand is NOT what I'd call cheap for a laptop. :(

Are you thinking of 1080 high definition video? Because the width would still not match high def: these screens are a different aspect ratio, not as wide a shape as 1920x1080 would be.

Where are the lightweight small laptops...

I just sold (whew) my 15 inch Powerbook still under warranty because it is bigger than I want to carry around. I understand that there are film makers and professional phtoographers who may find having a 17" semi-portable laptop on-site. The thing is I don't want to have to put up with having the "wings clipped" [lessor spec's] just because I want something in a more convenient form factor/size. I want small but powerful. As beautiful as my 15" PB was it was heavy and awkward much of the time I had it out and about with me.

Interesting. I travel with a 4.9-pound 12" iBook a lot for work. On my last trip (both business and pleasure) I went through 8 international airports. After 10,000 miles, you realize it's just too heavy.

I would gladly give up the combo drive (which I never use on assignment) if it would make the machine even the slightest bit lighter. If flash memory would get me under 4 pounds, I'd even give up the HD. All I need is a machine to access the net, send email and run a word processor.

This 17" is beautiful, but it's too big for me. What I want is a more-powerful, modern version of the eMate with a flash-based HD, and external storage / optical drives as an option.

I'm eating crow, I said there was no way these would be under $2999.

With my edu discount it's under $2500... so tempting.

Really? Wow. One more reason I should go back to school. :D

No, I really want a 15". And when rev 2 come out they should have DL, and be cheaper, without the stupid noise issues, too.

Which brings me to a point I've been wanting to ask: if there were 2gb ram modules available for the 'Books would they be able to handle 4gb of ram?

This memory "is intended for the budget minded customer that is not doing mission critical work and is not trying to get the best performance or reliability from their machine" (quote from the webpage). Does that mean you get the rejects that other customers returned because they are not working? Good luck.

I don't care what specs these MacBook Pros have or what they cost. I just want to see the stupid hinge on the screen change to a normal one. FOR GOD SAKES PLEASE!

I just thought of something ... the addition of FW800 means it would need a different motherboard right? So it *should* not have the issues that the last ones had that could be attributable to the motherboard. Or am I talking out of my hat?
