I just thought of something ... the addition of FW800 means it would need a different motherboard right? So it *should* not have the issues that the last ones had that could be attributable to the motherboard. Or am I talking out of my hat?

Good point. This is possible.

You mean like previous Powerbooks?

Sure, like the pismo not the titanium, or how about like every pc laptop in existence. Can't stand this freakin stupid apple hinge. You can't put the screen all the way down for one, looks stupid for another.

Are you thinking of 1080 high definition video? Because the width would still not match high def: these screens are a different aspect ratio, not as wide a shape as 1920x1080 would be.

Yes, I'd want 1920x1080.

Why would you ever need to put the screen all the way down?

I want...people to stop whining...lol

Which will probably happen when apple actually fixes the problem. Talk about RDF...there's a problem with the machines, and people are complaining that the folk who have these screwed up machines want it fixed instead of settling for one that's defective. Crazy.

17" LAPTOP!!
How fat are we getting in this country

No the vibe i'm getting is alot of us (myself included) are waiting for the macbook to be released. Being a 12' powerbook owner, can't imagine moving to such a large laptop in the mobility sense, unless you really need it as a desktop replacement or on-the-go-pro work.

Wow, 12'? I didn't know anyone even made a laptop that big.

Yawn.....

I now have £1050 in the bank, want a 13.3 MacBook and am starting to lose interest  no, i'm not joking.

Gimmie a Macbook quick or its back to a sea of beige for me :(

This is a fact. Apple makes the best laptops out there and the thinnest. Plus they have DVI which is rare. Now if they can just get the 15" up to par with the 17" we might be getting somewhere.

Can I get you an empty glass for your farts? One area Apple is far behind the competition is the 12" ultraportable segment, where a 4.7 pound Powerbook is twice the weight of the lightest alternative. Anyway, Apple's notebooks are always thin, yes. And yes, few if any PC notebooks offer DVI, but most users connect via VGA... I know whenever my boss needs to use the projector at work with his Powerbook, he has to go back to his desk for his DVI->VGA adapter first. And most docking stations have DVI out.

Here's hoping Apple comes out with a 2.5 pound subnotebook.

PB/MBP hinge is good

I just want to see the stupid hinge on the screen change to a normal one. FOR GOD SAKES PLEASE!

Please NO NO NO NO NO NO.

The recessed hinge is one of the best things about Apple laptops. It

- makes them easier to open on airplanes/in crowded spaces because they're not so tall
- is a million times more durable than the old-style hinges on the TiBook and all Windows books
- looks much neater and more cleanly integrated, from both front and back

The recessed hinge, along with the metal casing and fantabulous keyboard, is something that would keep me buying Apple laptops even if they ran nothing but Windows.

There's no reason a recessed hinge couldn't open nearly 180°. It's an Apple design decision not to allow it to. The 12" is just about right -- I will admit my MBP doesn't open quite as far as I'd like.

My 5 Port Gigabit SWITH cost $21 - You don't need a GB Router

i will agree with you on this. except most cheap routers are only 100
Who said anything about anyone needing a GB Router?? My 5 Port Gigabit SWITCH cost $21 - You don't need a GB Router. You just plug a port from any cheap GB Switch to a regular Internet router and you have the best of both worlds cheap. :D

But where is the Powerbook G5s?

(ducks and runs)

Well at least I know who the people voting this thread negative are.:D

Interesting. I travel with a 4.9-pound 12" iBook a lot for work. On my last trip (both business and pleasure) I went through 8 international airports. After 10,000 miles, you realize it's just too heavy.

I would gladly give up the combo drive (which I never use on assignment) if it would make the machine even the slightest bit lighter. If flash memory would get me under 4 pounds, I'd even give up the HD. All I need is a machine to access the net, send email and run a word processor.

This 17" is beautiful, but it's too big for me. What I want is a more-powerful, modern version of the eMate with a flash-based HD, and external storage / optical drives as an option.

Yep, I'm right there with you. I know it is tough for some folks to even *think* about comparing manufacurers beyond the emperor's new Mac's, but as Mac user's step out from the cult and join real world specs (now I've stepped in it), that's exactly what needs to happen. The sony and Fujistu featherlights (3-4lbs) include rw dvd's!! Yes, I'll take the discussion to a non-17inch forum ;-). I just don't see how a company can be so innovative with some things like tiny, flat video iPods, but decide to get people to buy one more round of the old style "powerbooks."

I know it's better for their bottom line to do it this incremental way, and doesn't distract from their idiotic statements to the French (that they are paraphrasing supporiting "government sponsored piracy" when the downloaders pay for the fracking songs - propaganda lives at Apple - ignore the edges of what people really want and maybe it will go away and we can keep our 'sealed' system ).

Think Different... oops. That was an old catch phrase.

No, people will always whine...no matter what.

I read that 4 times and it still didn't make any sense to me ..

I had a 15" 1GHZ TiBook -> 17" Hi Res -> 15" MBP and I just seem to use the 15" inch more in general and feel better taking it out of the house. Also, the increased resolution does slow down games too much. The x1600 is barely cutting it in WoW and Doom3 (both universal) as is..
