OK kids, in regards to the 100GB 7200 RPM drive vs. the 120 GB 5400RPM drive...here's my conclusion (having used both for extended periods of time.

I use the entire Final Cut Studio. This takes up a massive 35-40GB. That doesn't leave me much space on my internal drive. Also take into consideration I'm going to give another 10-20GB to my Windows partition for my games. You MIGHT notice more speed on the 7200RPM, but personally I'd rather have more space for my media, apps, etc. than a little faster drive. If it were between a 120GB 7200RPM and a 120GB 5400RPM, I'd go for the faster one for sure...but we have to trade space for speed here. Especially now with the FW800 (THANK YOU APPLE) on the 17" I can use a portable external drive (bus powered Wiebetech with a Hitachi 7200RPM 60GB Drive...BUS POWERED) for footage and media I don't need to access 24 hours a day. That being said...from the tests I've seen, there is no significant difference in battery life between the 5400RPM and the 7200RPM. Think of it this way, the slower drive spins slower and the faste drive spins for less time, but it's negligable anyway. Cheers.

Well I wouldn't worry about it. Seagate has a 160gb hard drive out now. Its just a matter of time before its offered on a config.

I wouldn't want to use a 4200RPM drive...that IS a bit slow. Plus it's not SATA, so it won't go into the MBP.

Awesome. Very glad this is out, and the price... I'm amazed.

I'm thinking they factored in kind of the Intel price drop and will drop the 15" a bit later perhaps?? Which would too be awesome.

Happy, good, yay.... Just where are the MacBooks??
I'm still stuck in January, wistfully wishing..... I don't know what I'm wishing.

I just want the MacBook.
Now. It's rather embarassing to tell someone I think they'll probs be out in Jan, then tell the same person I am almost sure they'll be out by the end of April and probably at April first, and....

Where are you getting your information from?

"Seagate's Momentus 5400.3 160GB drive will have a spin speed of 5,400 rpm and come with either the Ultra ATA-100 interface or SATA (Serial ATA) 150 interface, the company said."

FW400 Works Just Fine On FW800 Ports With A Simple 50¢ Adaptor

I love my Firewire 800, although I only happened upon it because my father bought it by mistake. I'm starting to wish it were available on the Mac Mini for the external HDD. I hear the 400 drives work well enough--what is the possibility that Firewire 400 gets upgraded like USB did? Why is one serial bus different from another, can someone explain it?
That's Apple's call. I imagine the cost of the FW800 chip is 50¢ more than the FW400 chip so some bean counter voted to keep it slow. FW400 can run on a FW800 port with a simple 50¢ adaptor. Apple's always trying to differentiate products. I guess they think "consumers" will never need nor want FW800 "so why give them the choice?" I think it's rude not to include it in the whole line.

Oh, is that the one they announced like three days ago? What's the release date on that?

Apple killed their own invention by not including it on ALL their mac products including the ipod or the Mac mini. I am scared to death of buying a FW800 only device now that apple can't make up its mind on even FW400 (ipod video and nano).

Hmph. Was going to buy a refurb 15', but this tempts me now with the ability to have 2 firewire ports, thus being able to hook up a camera and a fw drive at the same time. Decisions, decisions.

(Alas, the point is moot , as no one seems to actually want to, you know, pay for the ebay auctions they win. But, I digress)

Waiting For 160 GB 5400 rpm Seagate Inside

Come to think of it, maybe this can be a reason to wait. Oh I love to wait. Waiting for perfection. It's so much fun to wait and wait and wait. . . :D I might as well wait until I am DEAD.

by the time Merom arrives, there will be more Intel apps

Ok... so I've been waiting since sometime last year to buy a 17" laptop. I of course was hoping the 17" would come out in January but it's so late in the year already.
Remember that this nice, shiny new 17" MacBook will be a dog at Photoshop and most other PPC applications.

If the high power apps that you need are not yet Intel - that would be a good reason to wait - even without Merom on the horizon.

Rostetta isn't so slow as to make simple ImageReady file size reductions a long wait is it Alden?

Read The Year MC. It's shipping NOW. I thought Apple would glom onto it and offer it with this release. Why they did not is the BIG MYSTERY of the day since Seagate is one of their primary HD sources.  :(

I can't believe you didn't know about this since last summer MC. . You are really out of the loop man. ;)

That price seems low when you compare it to the 15". Upgrade the 15" to match the 2.16Ghz and 120Gb HDD of the 17" and it comes out £60 more (UK pricing) and you then get the extra ports, screen and DL 8xSuperdrive on top. I hope this means the 15" is due a price drop.

Oh. I hope so!

Any idea on when this might happen? Because when it does, I'll be the first to order! :D

Funniest thing is the pricing.

A 15.4" with the 2.16 BTO and 120GB HD comes in at Eur 2,924.68

A 17" with same spec costs Eur 2,694.67

250 Euro cheaper than the 15" ??? That's fecked up. I suspect Apple are going to have to do some price re-structuring in its 15" range as it does not represent good value in its current form.

Dude what is wrong with you?! Get a loan NOW and buy one. then wait a week or more and watch the price go up and sell it un opened and make some cash!

$1000-$1200 range

The price of the 17" seems like a good indication that our Macbooks are going to be fairly inexpensive. I'm thinking we could def see one in the $1000-$1200 range.

OMG! An entry-level laptop for ONLY $1200! Unbelievable!

But seriously, Apple has to keep this thing under $1000. Dell is selling laptops for $500. Yes, I know, you get OS X with a Mac. I know you get firewire. But costing more than twice as much as the competition is not going to increase market share. It just won't. Ever. Okay? Got it? Okay.

Downsizing Large Image File Sizes Under Rosetta Can't Take Very Long - Can It?

AidenShaw said:
That doesn't really answer my question Alden. I have no idea what an SP Action is. I may need to occasionally open a large file size image and "Save for Web..." which takes me to ImageReady (CS1 BTW) and then I simply save the resulting smaller image size. It takes no time on a PPC. Are you saying I will have to wait a minute for the same no-time-at-all action to happen under Rosetta? I find that difficult to believe. Say it ain't so. MovieCutter?, you know the answer. How long does it take to blow down, for example, a 512KB image file to 25k with ImageReady under Rosetta?

I guess I could use native iPhoto 6 instead. But I like the more precise control ImageReady gives me.

Drive speed and hinges

I put a 7200 in my laptop and I still debate the whole size vs speed thing, my conclusion is go 5400. The 7200 is maybe faster but sometimes it feels slower that my older smaller 5400...then again I have not been happy with any of my recent seagate purchases so maybe that affects my perception.

Here is something to think about....unless there is another platter in the bigger drive, and I don't think in the low profile drives they have upped the platter count then adding 20% to the density also adds 20% to the speed with no cost to the battery life for motor spinning. (and who ever said drives don't spin at their max rate all the time is thinking optical drives....all HDs I know of spin full speed or are spun down no in between, it has to do with the floating of the head etc.) Anyway I am thinking this 17inch bad boy might finally be the one to replace my much loved TiBook.

Hinge comment: I always liked the Ti Hinge better than the new mono hinge, and I have never had any problem with it and I open and close it many times a day and have done so for years...I know ibooks and PBs with the newer hinge that have had screen problems...fixed a number of them with pinched cables in the hinge. Personally I would like a hinge with no problems and that could open a full 180 degrees or maybe a full 360 to be come a tablet....

My 2 cents
D

What about 10"

I would just love some of this Apple goodness in an 8"-10" screen ultraportable, 1024 x 768 screen, 80gb or bigger, less than 1" thick, and under 3lbs (and you can lose the optical drive obviously). And include a CF reader slot. Every travelling photographer would be busting a gut to get hold of one of those.

God forbid I should otherwise be stuck with an Origami

Hey Multimedia, I have Frame 3 ready :D

Problem with that is that an 8-10" screen also gets you an undersized keyboard, which makes it difficult for any real work unless you hunt and peck anyway - never mind the limitation imposed by the screen size and resolution. Then you factor in the battery, which will be VERY small on a unit this size, and so won't offer much runtime. Lack of an optical means it's external, and just something else to haul around.

If someone needs an ultraportable, there are several flavors of Windows notebooks that are close to what you describe here. Personally, I don't think we'd ever seen an Apple offering at this size unless it's a tablet.

There is a PC laptop on Dell's site that is similarly configured to the Mac Book. It starts at $2,600. If it can run Windows as fast as that laptop then the new 17 is a very good deal.
