Somebody knows about the new subtitle future with this new update is true that no more black line shows when subtitles are playing if somebody know about this new change let me know thanks

Just to point out that you can hide the icons you don't want by going into the Parental Controls sections of the settings on the Apple TV - you simply click on each item and it toggles between Show/Hide.

Works well for me.

Great tip, I never realised this, it never occurred to me this functionality would exist in parental controls, but it worked a treat and I was able to hide all but MLB and the WSJ icons.

Thanks for this information, much appreciated!!

I didn't see a fix in here. How do i modify DNS settings?

Glad to know I'm not alone in this!

I believe it's under General >> Network, then choose Manual Config, the public Google DNS is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (though the ATV only allows one DNS entry).

I've been using the Google DNS on everything we own for years and never had any issues (ATV, PS3, several computers, even our TVs that support streaming services).

As discussed in the above thread, this issue has actually been occurring for years now and has affected a lot of people. The gist of it is that the people affected are having Netflix buffering issues on their Apple TV, but not on any other Netflix supporting device (e.g. PS3 or Roku) in their exact same network. Internet speed doesn't seem to be relevant, as many of the affected people have internet speed that should be fine. Some have reported that changing the Apple TV's DNS to a public DNS like google's has fixed their problem, but it hasn't corrected the problem for everybody.

from what i read google DNS is the problem

reason being that with netflix their CDN looks at your DNS server to locate you instead of your IP. with google DNS you could be using a DNS server anywhere in the world. and instead of streaming content from inside your ISP's network netflix will stream from another data center

OK, doubled checked on the actual ATV (vs. memory :) )

Settings >> Network >> Configure (the top menu item, you'll select the currently active network mode, wifi vs. ethernet, ours is wired. Then at the bottom of the Config you'll see DNS Configure, manual/auto, and you can select manual and enter the IP of a DNS.

Airplay to multiple speakers

I installed the update last night and couldn't wait to try out the airplay streaming to speakers as I have an Airport Express in my kitchen and another in the living room. The Apple TV is in the family room. I assumed I would be able to stream to all 3 simultaneously, as I can from iTunes on my Mac. Unfortunately, it seems the Apple TV is limited to streaming to only one set of speakers at a time which isn't any different from any other iOS device. Can anyone else confirm this, or did I miss a setting somewhere that will let me stream to both Airport Expresses and play through the AppleTV all at once?

No, it's not.

Maybe low-bitrate web video is fine, but that's not the point. Try streaming anything at 720p or 1080p at a decent bitrate and mirroring chokes on Wi-Fi.

I just came from two old MCE extenders, which had absolutely no issues streaming 1080p content over the same Wi-Fi network.

I stream 720p and 1080p content to my ATV3 on a regular basis with no issues and mirroring works excellently from my iPhone 4S, MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and my iPad 2.

Two problems I've found.

If I part watch one of my video podcasts, when I go to watch the rest of it, it starts at the beginning again, it didn't used to do this before the update, is anyone else having this problem, and have you found a way to fix it?

Second problem is. I cannot switch the Apple TV off. Prior to the update I would just press and hold the center button on the remote and it would switch the Apple TV off, but now I can't do this. Is anyone else having this problem?

Since the center button has been reassigned to moving icons, Sleep is now triggered by holding the play/pause button.

Yeah I was just going to post back that I'd found that out, thanks for the help though ;)

Me too. Doesn't remember Podcast playback position.

Also if you go watch the rest in another room it starts at the beginning again too.

Really? Over a Wi-Fi connected ATV?

Perhaps you are lucky, but perusing the large number of posts complaining about ATV's wifi robustness, it does seem to be an issue.

BTW, the latest 5.1 update did improve mirroring over wifi significantly, although I still get a bit of stutter in the video.

Damn another AppleTV update that breaks Dolby Digital output! Thank god I can reinstall 5.0.2!

That's awesome I'm going to do this tonight and see what happens.

Thank you!

My ATV2 stopped streaming correctly about 2 months ago for no reason. All my other devices and general internet perform perfectly. There is a huge discussion on the Apple support forums about it. I hope to hell this resolves the problem.

Nope, still broken. Thanks for nothing, Apple.

For those who are curious, I have tried:

  • reseting the ATV
  • re-updating the ATV
  • connecting via ethernet
  • connecting a different account

And it still can't even stream trailers without dying in buffer hell after a few seconds. It used to work perfectly. My XBox streams 1080p just fine.

I set it to Yes io Automatic, which works for me for most movies. For those that don't, I first select the non surround audio file and then switch back to surround. That solved it for me :)

Same here - 1080p videos stream flawlessly over Wifi, some movies are > 8 Gb in size

Yep, I found this as well. Also, watching the podcast part way causes the blue dot to disappear, I think, making it look like the episode has been watched.

I stream only 1080p videos to my ATV3 and it is flawless - videos are encoded with Handbrake at high bitrate (RF=19). You may want to try using the 'Web Optimized' setting in Handbrake, because that allows the video to start playing a lot sooner with less buffering required.

Nice update, too :)

I usually encode my m4v-movies with two different audio files (surround and/or digital) and two or three different subtitles - I had no troubles after updating, so I am guessing you should be fine as well :)

Yes m4v is my video with two different audio 5.1 (6 channels) and two different subtitles .... Are you using handbrake for you m4v Please let me know if you try with your home theater also can you let me know about the subtitles it is true that no more background you know the black line shows when you play a video thanks

Blinking light on the front since the update. I hooked it up to the MacBook and restored it 4 or 5 times. Hooked it back up 4 or 5 times. Doesn't see wifi, tried ethernet and as soon as I plug in the cable screen goes blank again, asks me to set a language, set english, goes black and comes back asking to set language.

So it works to see the menu without ethernet but won't connect to wifi. Ethernet gets stuff in a "language" loop. Airport and Comcast modem restarted also.

Any help would be appreciated.
