Apple Releases 5.1 Update for 2nd and 3rd Generation Apple TV

Yes m4v is my video with two different audio 5.1 (6 channels) and two different subtitles .... Are you using handbrake for you m4v Please let me know if you try with your home theater also can you let me know about the subtitles it is true that no more background you know the black line shows when you play a video thanks

Yup, I have m4v video encoded with Handbrake. I use settings from a guy at TPB - I have attached them. These will give you almost iTunes-like quality movie files.

That bug has been present everywhere, but only after 24 hours.

Funny :) I didn't notice that before. But I just checked and you're right about the 24-hour bug :)

I'm waiting to see if it has been fixed here because it's a huge pain for us - we play the same kids videos over and over and we have to search for them every time, even though they are in the history list.

Exactly! It's the same thing I'm facing here :) I just checked and the new release has fixed the 24-hour bug.

Is it possible to roll back to the previous software on the 3rd gen ATV, and if so how is it done.

Thanks in advance :)

The update broke two things for me -

DD 5.1 - stopped working on some movies, fine on others

I'm in the UK and it will now not select 1080p 60hz, it will only allow me to select 1080p 50hz (Pioneer Kuro)

I rolled back to the previous firmware and now all is well

Beware :(

Thanks so much for the help, its much appreciated.

Just one question. Do i need to have the ATV 3rd gen plugged into the mains power while restoring?

I've every usb lead apart from one that will fit the USB port on the back of my ATV 3rd gen, I have USB leads but they have mini connectors on them, which are too big. Suppose I'll have to buy one.

Update: I've just found a micro USB lead in my girlfriends Kindle box :D

I've got iTunes loaded up and the ATV connected to my computer, but it isn't showing up in iTunes.

I've tried powering the ATV on so that the light is on, on the front, but it still doesn't show up in iTunes, am I doing something wrong?

Strange. As long as it is connected via USB and mains, it should show up in iTunes. Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong.

If all else fails try rebooting the ATV and your computer...

Ive now got it to appear by holding down the menu and the down part of the circle on the ATV remote, initially I forgot to press SHIFT down when pressing the restore button in iTunes, but I tried again and pressed SHIFT this time and it then gave me the option to choose the firmware file I'd downloaded earlier.

It's just finished now but the light on the front is blinking still?

What you mean "Quick iTunes Account Switching"? You can switch iTunes accounts on Macs by switching to an other user by logging out of one user and into another saved on the Mac.

I have two iTunes accounts and just like to switch between them without having to re-type my account name and password again and again - I want to save it on my computer (willing to take the small risk that somebody steals my computer and theoretically could buy in my name) and just have a button to switch between both without having to re-type anything. I know there's a little Apple-Script-program out there called "iTunes Switcher", but is isn't 100% reliable, not maintained anymore and will probably break someday soon with a new iTunes version. I would really love if Apple includes such an option to save iTunes accounts including passwords to switch with one little click. (If I want to update apps etc.)

Don't worry about it, as long as you didn't get an error message in iTunes you should be fine.

Plug it back into your TV to confirm ;)

Yeah no errors in iTunes. I just switched off the power at the wall, disconnected my ATV. Connected it up to my TV again and I was prompted to do the initial setup.

After that everything is fine, I'm now back to software version 5.0.2 :D and I can now part watch a podcast and then continue from that point when I go back to watch the remainder :)

Thanks immensely for the help, its much appreciated :)

Same here - 1080p videos stream flawlessly over Wifi, some movies are > 8 Gb in size

Stream via AirPlay, or mirror?

Because streaming via AirPlay is fine. AirPlay Mirroring is where I notice some stutter.

I actually dug up a Diamond Wi-Fi repeater I had in a drawer and plugged the Apple TV 3 into it (ethernet cable) -- all mirroring issues are gone. :)

Since the repeater is on the same Wi-Fi network, it leads me to believe that ATV 3 is simply not as robust in terms of Wi-Fi reception as other devices, such as the repeater, or my old D-Link made MS Media Center extenders.

Although, in my case the ATV 3 I was having trouble with is about 60 feet from the router (but so is the repeater I just plugged in).

Oh yeah. Apple's most useless product...

It's quite possibly my MOST USED product (in fact I own three of them and have two more Airport Express only rooms for audio. In short, just because you watch a 19" television from 1987 or something similar doesn't mean we all do. I have one central server and beam audio and video all around the house (with the server itself, that's 4 rooms with video and 6 with audio capability and anyone with an iPod Touch or iPhone can play music straight to the guest bedroom speakers or any other room in the house using Airplay). Frankly, at $99, it's a freaking bargain, particularly if you hack it and can then add other features.

Think I found a bug:

Although you can now reorder the icons as you please, they reset if you restart the ATV. Is it just me?

I bought my brother the ATV3 and they used to stream from the iPad YouTube app for their 18 month old boy. Now that's gone and the new app doesn't support Airplay, they've found the same lack of functionality. It's very annoying as using the app on the iPad is much easier even than using the remote app to control YouTube on the ATV.

So far it seems as if that YouTube bug has been fixed. We've been playing stuff from the History menu no problem.

I think I noticed the same issue. I noticed one day that my icons were in a different place, and I remembered that I had restarted the apple tv the day before.
