I wonder if this is a test of iOS fast user switching ahead of the next iPad, or if they just find it more obviously useful on the TV.

can I use airplay to stream any image to the apple tv if my ipad is jailbroken and I have display out? or does that just work for the a/v cable?

Problem: I have an iCloud AppleID that is separate from my iTunes Store AppleID. The iPhone and iPad let you enter these IDs separately, so you get all your iCloud syncing from one and all your purchasing from the other (this is also great because it allows you to share a single purchasing ID for all your family's devices while letting everyone sync all their iCloud stuff separately). But I don't see any way to do this on the AppleTV, am I missing something? Until that happens I can't enjoy for example the PhotoStream sharing because I have to use my iTunes Store ID.

I'm in the same situation. Don't worry it's fine. I have both set up. Photostreams have a pref to set up on my iCloud and the rest (iTunes store/iTunes Match) are my other paying account.

Apple DOES need to let us consolidate these ID's but so far it's not interrupted what I want to do on any of my devices.

YouTube app is still there for all those wondering.

However, due to the icon reordering feature requiring you to hold down the select button, you can no longer hold it to put the Apple TV to sleep. There may be an option to change this in the settings but I haven't come across it yet.
You hold the play/pause button and it goes to sleep.

Our Apple TV is currently JB'ed , but it was just to mess around with for an afternoon since we haven't used any service outside of the OEM apps. XBMC is kind of cool if you want/need DLNA services, or want to aggregate external content (which could be cool I suppose) ...

Every show he mentioned is garbage. BREAKING BAD!!!!!!!

Breaking Bad is outstanding, but did you really call GoT and Dexter garbage?

Account switching could be included in the new iTunes due out in October.

Interesting possibility, and if so, might signal a push towards more "multi account" support in devices.

At least apple correctly labeled the version as a 5.1 update unlike iOS 6 should of been iOS 5.1

More like iOS 6 should have been 6.00000001 (BETA) that thing is garbage. Never had so many problem with a iOS before this one.

"Reorder icons on the second page"

That's it?!!

The update we've all been waiting for?

I hope something else is coming, and soon. App Store is a must for Apple TV to be competitive with Google TV, Roku and Boxee.

I bought a couple for the Airplay capability, but that can only go so far (and mirroring is rather useless with Apple TV's poor Wi-Fi capabilities).

It's your network that's the issue. We mirror web video from a MBA to a wifi ATV regularly and it works pretty well.

I'm really on the fence about buying this. Not that $99 is alot, but I just want to be sure I'll use it enough. I have 2 kids that occasionally watch Netflix, and they both have iPods...thinking they could Airplay their games to the screen. I have Direct TV so I'm not sure I'd watch a ton of TV on it. The photostream is great, but aside from showing pics to family from time to time...

Someone tip me over the edge, what am I missing here? :)

Not sure how well it works for games - might be too much lag for anything other than pretty casual use. For music and video though, it's pretty nice. The ability to send music to the stereo from another computer or device is great (ours works in conjunction with several Airport Expresses around the house). With little kids we watch lots of stuff on Youtube that we'd rarely watch on a computer, and despite having cable television, we actually watch a lot on Netflix. Also, having our photos come up is a really nice thing - we now get to see all the digital photos everyone takes every day - previously we'd only see them if we explicitly shared them or happened to sit down and browse. We often just end up sitting for a few minutes watching the photo show.

Nice. Still needs Spotify though!

Send it from an iDevice or computer. Audio only apps on the ATV are better handled with other controls. I'd be surprised if you see any apps like Spotify until they offer full 3rd party app installation.

Podcast app

any sign of podcast iCloud syncing? Was recently added to iPhone and iPad. Being able to come home and quickly pick up where you left off would be great.

Last I saw Netflix only had seasons 1-2 of Dexter and that much was removed last year.
...

Nope, the greedy content provider bastards are all starting to provide streaming solutions, so they want you to subscribe to their channel on cable/satellite in order to be able to stream their content. So they are all pulling stuff off Netflix.

But the reality is that if it's not on Netflix, one can always go to other places....

TV viewing is changing, just like the music industry changed. Netflix is really the only reason why more people do not pirate, but the content providers have their heads in dark places and don't see where it's all going.

BTW, Netflix has some truly great stuff that you'v e never heard of and I've been enjoying some of the older/indie content so much more than the majority of the latest blockbusters.

And Dexter..., it's the same formula over and over again, every season, so I've given up on it, anyway.

iPhoneRumors

Am I the only one left on the planet that is more interested in Macs than incremental 'improvements' for the iPhone?

We really need an apps for AppleTV. Not trying to toot my own horn, but my Movie Clock App could seriously benefit from this as it has on iPhone and the upcoming iPad app.

yep, no BBC iPlayer, no JB for ATV3 - it's quite useless here in the UK and I don't want to use AirPlay - what's the point of employing 2 devices for 1 task?

I'm not sure you understand what AirPlay is...

love it but did they change the sleep operation

I love being able to switch between iTunes accounts and the shared photo stream.

Seems they changed the sleep button. When the select button is pushed and held nothing but error sounds. Settings->Sleep is the only way I have found to send it to dreamland.

Still playing with it, maybe the forward stop button is the new method. If so, strange that they would change and not post.

No, it's not.

Maybe low-bitrate web video is fine, but that's not the point. Try streaming anything at 720p or 1080p at a decent bitrate and mirroring chokes on Wi-Fi.

I just came from two old MCE extenders, which had absolutely no issues streaming 1080p content over the same Wi-Fi network.
