That's true. A little bit of a pain but yes it can be done.

Yes, pain if you want to watch now, no doubt.

I use it occasionally to "reserve" movies I know the family wants to watch during the upcoming weekend. Then they're ready and waiting, no concern for drops or anything.

I'm so angry. Airplay doesn't work and doesn't send the sound from the movie you are renting. Airplay on Apple TV works fine with the music and send the sound to an Airport Express without any problem. Why is it too complicated to do the same with movies and trailers.... ? An iPad does it perfectly !

Am I the only one ?

Working fine here...

Well don,t you currently use blur ray player, cable box, television for one task? Why is using an iOS device easily synced to your Apple TV either complicated or cumbersome?

no cable box, blu-ray is in PS3 and TV is a display, not sure how would you 'watch' anything without a TV on a TV :)

New setting?

I'm not sure if this was added before, but I think "Audio and Video" Settings added "Adjust for AirPlay Overscan" with a default ON setting.

"Turn this setting on if video from AirPlay devices appears cropped on your TV screen."

"Turn this setting off to stop adjusting video overscan. This may result in cropped video on your TV screen."

What do you mean? You can AirPlay to every Apple TV in the house simultaneously, and with audio you can set each to a different volume level. Inversely each Apple TV can stream different content from the same mac. It's a great device and very, very easy to use.

i'd repeat myself - to keep it simple, all i want is bbc iplayer app on atv

Turning on subtitles with iOS 5.1?

According to the Apple release notes, 5.1 offers; SDH support for the deaf and hard-of-hearing as well as improvements to viewing and selecting subtitles.

So, what's the improvement in *turning on* subtitles? I hopefully don't have to go through Settings to turn them on anymore. Is there a simpler way now?? I can't find any documentation about it. Thanks.

Create a US account, buy gift cards from eBay, makes the Apple TV so much better.

Combine this with Netflix, UnblockUS and its our main entertainment hub and I'm in the UK!

I'm in the UK I understand about changing the DnS settings I agree but what's the benefit to eBay/US gift cards? Better rate of exchange? :) thanks

Don't think this is the final update. I updated one and I get this on one screen. Anybody else see this ?

A point update, not a full update to 6.0? I have a feeling we'll be seeing an app store soon with the release of a next generation AppleTV running iOS6.

AppleTV 3 was the "s" version. An all new AppleTV is probably coming soon. Why did they delay the release of iTunes 11 until October? The new iPods are also delayed until October. They must be hiding something in those devices and software that can't yet be revealed. I'm betting on an October event marking the release of a new AppleTV with iOS6, an iPad mini, iTunes 11 and the new iPods.

The Apple TV update today is already iOS 6. It is the software version that is 5.1. That's not the OS Version. If you go to the about screen and click the select button, you will see the Apple TV is now on iOS 6.

Cheers, I didn't think for a second they would have gotten rid of that!

The select button now allows you to reorder the apps on the home screen so the sleep functionality had to be reassigned.

Apple Releases 5.1 Update for 2nd and 3rd Generation Apple TV

Now in 5.1 if you want to power down the AppleTV hold down the play button.

Me too. But it isn't available yet, that is not Apple's fault, nor is it a deal breaker. Air playing from an iOS device is no more cumbersome than having to load a Blu ray disc into a player. There isn't yet an all in one device for all media requirements in only one stage, but apple are getting there.

rearrange the icons? looks like apps are coming some day! :)

oh, and we want NFL! :D

You miss my point, probably deliberately, so I won't bother to re explain.

Actually, let me try, although you probably still won't get it.

Lots of forms of media require more than one device to function. Blu ray player needs disc, plAyer and the television. Streaming from iOS device requires iOS device, atv and television. Three components. So what is the difference and why is this is any way a deal breaker for atv?

Lots of people want lots of different built in channels/apps on the atv, the rights holders for content don't want this as it hurts their revenue stream. In the Mean time, extra functionality will slowly continue to come on line. Don't blame apple for the greedy/Luddite nature of big media companies.

oh you're so wrong with that last sentence - there are devices and apple will not get there

nope, you don't get it. it's apple tv, it should have xbmc, plex, iplayer whatever video content related app on it.

Did the update and it went to restart and just have a blinking light upfront. Hard reset with remote and the same. Unplugged and back in and the same.

Any thoughts?

I use my ATV practically every day to watch video podcasts.
I keep hoping they will fix the bug where the podcasts keep showing as new after watching. I'm tired of having to manually mark them all as watched.
Did this update fix that?

The first thing I thought of after installing this update is that Apple is starting to become a little too OCD for my taste...

"Ok fine, we'll let you arrange some of the icons on your TV... but not the first row! They're perfect the way they are they're staying that way!"

(Apple goes back to muttering to himself about wanting to watch Judge Wapner...)

The new password protection to access the appletv doesn't seem to work from either my iphone or mac. On the mac, a prompt comes up, but won't allow you to enter any characters. Iphone lets you enter characters, but the prompt keeps popping back up. annoying.
