Dumb Question

This is a dumb question, I know it is and now you know it is. But, with this new update, can you connect an external hard drive and do wireless time machine backups, without the need of purchasing timecapsule?

I usually buy all Apple Products, but I cannot for the life of me spend $499, on the 1tb TimeCapsule (the 500gb is not worth it to me). Honestly my Drobo 2.0 with 4 1tb Hitachi Drives, costed $750 total.

If the answer is still no, then I will continue to run my home with an old G Airport Extreme and two old Airport Expresses.

Feel free to make fun of me in the posts below.

-To clarify, I am asking if I bought the new Airport Extreme Router and hooked an external USB drive to it.

Before I update this mission critical piece of my home office, I'm waiting to make sure no major bugs are in it :) So...how are things working out?

Everything seems to work perfectly fine for now... No bugs to speak of... though I would need to use it for at-least a week till I could give you a 100% guarantee...

Yeah, you can, not a problem at all. Just connect to that hard drive and go to the Time Machine settings. The HD should be in the list.

IF, it's not in the list, open terminal and enter; defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

Then try again, it should show up.

Looks like manually configured IPv6 tunneling is still as broken as it was in 7.3.1 and 7.3.2.

Can't see AirDisk Volumes via MobileMe

I don't get it. I installed the firmware update, entered my MobileMe info, and my AirDisks still don't show up when I'm on another network. Anyone else having this issue? I have my AEBS set up in bridge mode, and for now have it set up in the DMZ on the other router. Anyone have any ideas? The really weird part is that I can afp:// into my AEBS and see the drives, but I don't know why MobileMe isn't working... More info can be provided if needed.

Is this for USB connected devices only? Would appreciate if anyone can comment on being able to access individual folders within the Time Capsule disk.

Thanks.

Time Capsule

I just bought a TC and downloaded the firmware, did the manual setup, entered my mobile me info and I dont see it...

If any one could post step by step directions or just let us know what we 'should' see...

Prior to this update you could access your external HDD plugged into Airport Extreme and use it as Time Capsule / Time Machine, I've been using it since summer of 2007.

gigabit ethernet

The gigabit ethernet port finally works in 1000 full duplex mode with my docsis 3.0 modem. Sick. The net is super super super super fast now, along with that cat 6 I bought at overstock.com

Finally Fixed !!! Thank You Apple

Sometime after the last iTunes update, I could not stream my music to an Airport Express connected Stereo.

I would get an "Unknown Error Occurred -3259".
I tried all the Apple-suggested resolutions but they never worked.

The odd thing is, I was able to perfectly stream my iTunes music via Airfoil. That worked perfectly, without ever so much as a hiccup.

After this firmware update, iTunes streaming is back.

THANKS!!!

If I recall, I used my iPhone-price-reduction-apology Apple Store credit (September 2007) to buy my Airport Extreme, and set up the Time Machine shortly thereafter.

My Extreme updated while I typed this, and I'm back online already. Looking forward to trying out the Remote File Access. RFA was to be part of my strategy for getting a new Extreme, will be a bit of a harder sell now.

PS Oh, yeah, where's my 10.5.7???

Now umm... I hope you do realize that you're not getting ANYWHERE NEAR a Gbit...

Unless of course you live in Japan or S. Korea... ;)

developer.apple.com

Thanks Apple for disconnecting my internet for this momentous upgrade. I woke up this morning and noticed this upgrade. I decided to postpone the upgrade, since I was about to run out the door, but I wanted to start a lengthy download in Windows-side of things. After I cancelled the upgrade, I did notice that Airport Utility complained about not being able to read the config on the AP's, but I disregarded it. I rebooted in to windows, only to notice that wifi is not working. I boot back to OS X and notice that it's not working there either, that I practically HAVE to upgrade before it allows the wifi to work again.

Needless to say, I had no time to start the lengthy download I was planning to do, and I now have to do it after work, wasting several hours on it. Thanks Apple!

I blame Windows :p

I could use the internet perfectly fine even after AEBS notified me of the update...

this fw kills my Mac Mini (last gen Intel GMA graphics) network card bought from ebay!!

before this fw, i can connect my Airport Extreme Giga via wireless N 5.0ghz only,,
now, i can only connect via 2.4Ghz compatible

I'm waiting for the new TC to be released on Amazon. Anyone know how much Amazon normally lags on Apple releases?

I could use it as well initially. But I dismissed the upgrade-notification, and then it reminded me again. And at that point it disconnected wifi. And that disconnection carried over to Windows. So this isn't a Windows-problem.

Here's how to do it

Open up Airport Utility.
Click on your time capsule or airport extreme.
Click on Manual Setup
Click on the Advanced (next to Disks tab)
Click on the MobileMe (between Port Mapping and IPv6 tabs)

enter your info and you're set :)

How come Apple can add new feature and functionality to Time Capsule and Airport Express without charging and then turn round and state under Californian Law they are obliged to charge for iPod touch updates?
