Trying to access my USB drives on my AE via MobileME

Open up Airport Utility.
Click on your time capsule or airport extreme.
Click on Manual Setup
Click on the Advanced (next to Disks tab)
Click on the MobileMe (between Port Mapping and IPv6 tabs)

enter your info and you're set :)

I did all of this after installing 7.4.1....and the update was successful BUT when I go to MobileMe to the SHARED drives....nothing happens. Suggestions?

I could never get back to mac to work.
does ipv6 need to be set to something on my time capsule? its set to Link-Local at the moment
I also have a siemens SX763 router (wireless disabled on this using my time capsule instead)

You already can, I do it all the time when I'm away from home.

Just enable WAN sharing and then just access it from any computer in the world...

On Windows just go to \\you.r.i.p\name_of_harddrive

On OS X, just open finder, click on 'Go', 'Connect to Server', enter your IP, and it'll ask you for the login info. Once you enter it, you can use it just like you would use an iDisk.
Yes, I know, but it was my (and everybody's else I've asked) understanding that this does not use IPsec. Back to my Mac however does use IPsec.

Now umm... I hope you do realize that you're not getting ANYWHERE NEAR a Gbit...

Unless of course you live in Japan or S. Korea... ;)

developer.apple.com

yup, but my speeds (on speakeasy and speedtest) went up from 30 and change up to 48 and change. Also my upload went up from 4 to 12. A big jump. Sure it will never be a gig, but faster net is always better.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but at those speeds, be the Airport connected to the modem at either 100Mbit or 1000Mbit, makes no difference at all since the WAN speed doesn't change in the slightest...

Of course if you were connected at 10Mbit previously... but this... not sure why...

This is a dumb question, I know it is and now you know it is. But, with this new update, can you connect an external hard drive and do wireless time machine backups, without the need of purchasing timecapsule?

I usually buy all Apple Products, but I cannot for the life of me spend $499, on the 1tb TimeCapsule (the 500gb is not worth it to me). Honestly my Drobo 2.0 with 4 1tb Hitachi Drives, costed $750 total.

If the answer is still no, then I will continue to run my home with an old G Airport Extreme and two old Airport Expresses.

Feel free to make fun of me in the posts below.

-To clarify, I am asking if I bought the new Airport Extreme Router and hooked an external USB drive to it.

Not making fun of you - but Apple have a problem here IMHO - people don't know what their stuff is capable of doing and what it isnt. This probably means people are buying it and finding it doesnt do what they want - not good and others arent buying it not knowing it would do what they want also not good. Why dont they just sort their advertising a little more and write a decent manual!

Firmware Problem? IDEAS PLEASE!!!

Have been using a TC for a year as a mini server to store files that are shared by 3 macs and 3 pcs.

Just installed the TC firmware updated.

I can drag and drop files from the PC or Mac desktops to the TC hard drive without any problems.

But if I have messages in OSX Mail or XP Outlook, I cannot drag and drop direct from the programs on to the TC hard drive. (I could do this before the firmware update.) I can drag the emails to the desktops and then from the desktops to the TC hard drive, but I cannot go direct from the programs to the TC hard drive.

Any ideas?

dunno can only tell you what the tests tell me. When i take the wan back to automatic, the speeds go down. When I put the 1000 on, it shoots up. This is over wifi too. it looks and feels faster. That's all i know

I tired reverting to 7.3.2 firmware ... but that NOW has the same problem. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i haven't had the chance to log onto a different network to test the feature, so i'm just placing my faith in apple that it works as advertised.

i've notice people posting and wondering why their finder doesn't look any different after updating the firmware and setting things up.

if you go into finder preferences and click on the "Sidebar" tab, you should see that "Back to My Mac" is included in the "Shared" section of the finder sidebar. By deselecting "Back to My Mac", the Time Capsule/Airport icon disappears from the sidebar in finder and conversely reappears by selecting it.

I'm assuming that regardless of whether you're at home or away and using a different network, your finder sidebar will look the SAME regardless. What I mean is, i don't think that after setting up the feature, that you'll have a new drive icon show up in finder. you'll just see your time capsule/airport icon like usual, which you can then click on like you normally would while at home.

i'll be testing this out tomorrow morning though!

Are you saying the Airport Extreme can't do DynDNS?
I have my old Netgear router set up so it conects to dyndns.org and updates it's IP and forwards some ports (webserver, screen sharing) to my Mac Mini. I have my Mac Mini registered under DynDNS (it's free) and I can just type in my registered domain and it will forward to my Mac Mini at home.

That's very useful when I wanna do some remote desktop, I just open Leopards Screen Sharing app and enter the URL. Also necessary for websites...

Can't Time Capsule handle this kind of thing? Do I really need Mobile Me just because I have an Apple brand router?

After 7.4.1 firmware update Airport Express unable to connect

I have a Time Capsule which creates a wireless network in my home and 3 Airport Expresses to stream music over AirTunes. I applied the 7.4.1 update to the Time Capsule with no issues. However, applying the update to the AirPort Express units causes the status light to blink amber (after startup is finished) and the AirPort Utility cannot find them on my network. I have been through the process of resetting the Airport Express and re-configuring it from scratch 5 times now. Each time I get the same result that the AirPort Express is unrecognised after the settings are made.

The Time Capsule is creating a closed 802.11n (5GHz only) wireless network using WPA2 Personal Encription and no Access Controls. I did not change any settings on the Time Capsule or the Airport Express on the first time of applying the firmware update.

Just a note of caution - this update is fine for my Time Capsule, but has broken the Airport Express.
I have reverted the Expresses to 7.3.2 where all is well again.

Damn, why doesn't apple do a Dynamic DNS like everyone else out there. It is so easy and kinda a rip off to make it mobile me only. IMHO.

and to: MrCrowbar

I think there IS the option for DYNDNS setup, under AIRPORT>BASE STATION>AIRPORT EXTREME NAME choose EDIT in the airport utility.
try it...

I am still missing the share your disk over the WAN though:confused:
Hope I find it soon !

This firmware update has COMPLETELY messed up my wireless.. I have a Time Capsule 500GB first gen.

The wireless on my iPhone ( 3G 16GB ) and my iMac ( 2008 Aluminium 3.06 ) has gone completely wacko.

I can't log onto adium now for some reason. Web pages decide to load when ever they want.

WARNING

The most logical conclusion is that your problem has nothing to do with the firmware you have installed on your TC. The problem lays elsewhere.

Really? It was all working before the firmware update (literally in the seconds before the update) and stopped working in the seconds after the update.... think it has to be the update or the weirdest coincidence ever.

I'm disappointed that is requires MobileMe and a PC turned on.

Why can't I just access the Airport externally if I know the IP address?

How come Apple can add new feature and functionality to Time Capsule and Airport Express without charging and then turn round and state under Californian Law they are obliged to charge for iPod touch updates?

My guess is that these firmware updates really benefit those who have a MobileMe account, a paid service.
