I wonder if the Airtags only receive the updates when i range of your own devices, or if they get the updates when out and about in the world? Potentially some pour schmo working in baggage handling would use gigabytes of data updating airtag firmwares (and probably flatten their battery at the same time...)
AirTag that I have with me every day is still on 1.0.301. The others that have been sitting at my house for the last year are on 2.0.24. 🤷🏻

Finally! [REDACTED] has been missing from the AirTags for so long, I thought I would never be able to [REDACTED]! Now [REDACTED] every single [REDACTED] when I get out of my house, and my [REDACTED] is so much more [REDACTED]

I work in IT and got a whole drawer full of CR2032 batteries for replacing the CMOS batteries on PC motherboards. Even if they lasted only a month, it wouldn't bother me. Plenty more where those came from. They work in my car keys, too.
I have no money to even buy food, let alone CR2032 batteries. This is not the point, point is they introduce firmwares that shorten product life to create upgrade cycles. iPhone Batterygate, Macbook Butterflygate, Airpods Max ANC-gate, Apple Mac Studio Display webcam-gate, Mac Pro.

Um, Apple does not sell batteries so there would be no reason for them to purposely reduce battery life. Just the opposite.

None of the things you mentioned there resulted in people upgrading. In most cases, Apple replaced the devices, which EXTENDED the upgrade cycle. You seriously think that people bought a brand new Studio Display, had some webcam issues, and then..... bought another one? Apple issued a firmware update within a couple weeks and resolved the issue.

How was Butterflygate caused by a firmware update? 🤣

Apple: We have new firmware for AirTags!
Customer: Cool, what's new in the firmware?
Apple: We may or may not tell you at some point. But you should install it.

Only Apple.

No, plenty of companies issue maintenance updates with “bug fixes and performance improvements” as the only release notes.

Only MacRumors announces it with a graphic that looks like “bug fixes and performance improvements” is a must-have holiday gift.

And only MR members think every firmware update is a stealth attack on their precious battery…

Family share?

This would be so helpful… “Honey, where are the keys to the storage locker”, “Honey, did our suitcase take a wrong turn at Alba-koikey?” Most of the things worth tagging are things one person doesn’t have sole control of and more than one person in a family would want to find.

"Honey, I can't seem to find the Airtag I use to stalk you... I mean..."

Until then, no deal!
I didn't realize this when I bought mine and I'm very upset about it. I mean I can see all my family's devices, watches, phones, iPads, etc. But not the air tags. 😞

Anyone have an issue where you bought an AirTag and then later after replacing the battery you get a notification on your phone “the owner of this AirTag can see it’s location.”? I’m the owner of this AirTag! I wonder if this update will fix it.

I lost an air pod pro 1, and ever since I have that message when carrying my remaining air pod.

Same here. And the 2 that updated have low battery warnings. The one in my wallet with full charge is still on 1 0 301.

 AirTags use a CR2032 battery, the most common watch battery out there. They cost about 60¢ and should last about a year.

I'm on my third CR2032 in mine, which was purchased on the first day they were available, so 1.5 years. Both times I replaced the battery within a few days after I start seeing battery warnings. I'd say the batteries last about 6-9 months on average.

All depends on how often you use them. Have some that are over a year old but I've also never had to ping them.

That would be nice. We have an airtag in our TV remote cases because our kids constantly lose the remote controls. It would be nice to be able to track them with more than one device in the house.
