PSA. If you are running a dev or public beta, it will not update AirTag firmware. I had to pair my AirTag with my old iPhone 6S running iOS 15, set the two next to only another, and drove to the pub. By the time I finished my first pint, I saw the firmware was updated in Find My

I think we might only get the update in Jan'23.
It's the holiday period of the year and i don't think Apple will chance a update that could have a potential bug in it right now.

Mine has updated to .36

Dec 16 here , mine is not updating from 2.0.24 , it updated practically instantly on the main release date to 2.0.24 the last time around.
i would expect “Dec 16” in this context to mean Dec 16th morning, during business hours, in California, where Apple is located, so at least another 6-8 hours from now.

oddly enough all three of my tags reported low battery within 2 days of one another. They were in service about a year. Wonder if that warning was more calendar based or actual voltage
I still use about half dozen Tiles and right around 10 months to a year the batteries head south for vacation. Set a timer in calendar, order a cardful of bats from Bezosburg, and replace.

Mine too overnight - they were stuck at .24 when I checked again and again after reading this thread then bam! checked yesterday and was at .36 - maybe? JUST MAYBE? sped up after I moved two items with tags within 6 feet of my phone?

The one with 2.0.24 was updated to 2.0.36 today. Though, the one on 1.0.301 is not updated yet.

we have 5 apple air tags. some in the home and outside as well. they all update their own. don't have to sit my phone near them to update the last. depends on who is near them with an apple device. Japan still no update from 2.0.24 sat 17 12.26 am. will get here soon.

Good tip, thank you

I have electronic shifting on our mountain bikes which also use 2032. I have an amazon subscription for these batteries. I replace the remote starter batteries, now the tags, and change the batteries in the shifters and place two in each of the bikes tool kits.
Also, have 9v batteries on subscription, for every 6 months. when they come in I know it's time to change the smoke detector batteries. I know it's slightly more expensive but the convenience is nice.

Well, these are my observations:

A couple of my Airtags had updated to 2.0.24 before 2.0.36 was released. The rest are still in 1.0.131.

I think the whole upgrade is controlled by Apple (probably based on serial number). I upgraded my phone to the latest 16.2 (Airtags were not upgraded). I have removed one of the Airtags from my account, removed the battery, reconnected to my AppleID and no upgrade happened. I think that in the end there might be a couple of things a user can do to initiate the upgrade, but if Apple has decided that a particular Airtag is not going to be upgraded yet there is nothing that can be done to force the upgrade. My Airtags still work fine and do exactly what they are supposed to do, regardless of their particular firmware version. My 2 cents.

im on 16.3 b1 still have airtags with old 301 firmware

I still wonder why Apple staggers the updates this way. It can't be that much of a burden on Apple's servers.

I have been waiting for the update.
My phone was on 16.2 but the iPad wasn’t.
I updated the iPad to 16.2 and within 3 minutes of 16.2 running on the iPad all 3 AirTags were updating

One of mine showed low, and I tried to replace it with the stupid Duracell w/ anti kid eating coating, so I put the old one back, and the battery level showed good :D
Did the same experiment. AirTag assumes the battery is full even if you put the old one back. They just estimate the charge level based on usage. It's a simple function of time and how many times it was pinged, searched for, made a sound etc.

I’m gonna guess gamma testing - if there are no internet-wide howls of pain after the 25%, then they release the last 75%. If there are, however, they’ve only made 25% of their customers hate them.

5 of my airtags updated one of them is on 301 still and one on 2.0.24
im on ios 16.3 beta
i have 7 airtags one one wallet that always with me not updated and one on travel bag is on 24 update
